Me before Volume 7 : I heard about Merlin Hermes. I really wanna get to that part soon.. he looks very cool. Shame I heard he gets the least screen time out of all Klein’s personas.
Me reading Vol 7 rn : MERLÍN HERMES!!! Does he get another chapter.. YES MERLIN HERMES!! Oh dear mysterious Miracle Invoker, Mr.Fully Automated Wishing Machine, the wandering magician, oh finally you have shown up. Every chapter with Merlin Hermes is pure joy. Everything about him is immaculate. Yes I am very biased.
Something about Klein having to meticulously put on masks all the time, to have to restrain many of his habits as Gehrman Sparrow, to act like a high society member (and act like someone twice his actual age) as Dwayne Dantes. I’m just happy to see him smile when he wants, make witty comments, act mysterious but also be cheery, make a difference in some peoples’ lives, and overall just enjoying the joy in life right now. After everything in Volume 6, he should just enjoy life like this. Honestly, I wish we could get more scenes of him going out and eating delicacies more often, but then I realize he’s now Seq 2 and eating is no longer a necessity. But I guess he can always summon them.. in any case it pains me a little to know that when the one opportunity arises where he can just chill out, he no longer can enjoy it like he used to, and even that period of time as Sherlock Moriarty and Nighthawk Klein Moretti was extremely short and fleeting. Like, imagine you’re someone who likes to eat and taste random food, but life simply doesn’t allow you to do it often because you keep running into danger, and after that you constantly have to be mindful of your diets to accompany your different personas, then the opportunity finally arrives that you no longer have to abide by those personas’ specially crafted diets now, only to remember you are now someone who doesn’t feel hungry anymore. That also applies to other stuff like general entertainment, etc etc. What would a theatre show seem like to the greatest actor? What would a circus show appear to a Miracle Invoker? Merlin Hermes feels like an honest persona, but with a sense of disconnection and loneliness lying underneath.

I was speeding through the past three hundred chapters and besides rambling about Merlin on tumblr I didn’t write much reaction posts haha. Oh, man, what an amazingly constructed world, plot and story. Isn’t it funny that the moment I finish reading is just about the time Klein is nearly about to make a return in COI, from what I’ve heard? Also cuttlefish didn’t have to wring my heart out with that last chapter AHHHHHH [sobbing]

I’ve been thinking. Of the angstiest. Azik and Klein fanart. And now that I’ve finished the main story, I can draw them with full understanding and emotions. The relationship between this student and teacher is beautiful. What went from a simple favor between a seemingly random profesor and student to a bid to keep each other’s humanity anchored through words written by genuine love and care from the other party is wonderful.
Klein starting off as a human acting as a god, a reliable pillar of support in the first tarot club meeting, and becoming a god who’s more like a caring friend to everyone else, truly half a pillar of the universe in the last tarot club meeting before going to sleep.
You were always a guardian, yet also a miserable wretch.
Hear me out when I say I want Amon, Bill Cipher and Timekeeper cookie to have a tea party together.

Cheeky, silly wandering magician who wants to make your wishes come true, what’s not to love?
I like to think about the silly connection I made between TMA’s Stranger, LOTM’s Fool Pathway, and HSR’s Path of Elation. Uncannily faceless people and monsters who laugh at misery and tragedy. My auto TMA sense when starting LOTM was like, oh yes, Klein is an avatar of the Stranger, and now that I’ve completed it, it became more like “Nikola Orsinov is a Sequence 4 Bizzaro Sorcerer”, “Sparkle is a Sequence 6 Faceless and an avatar of the Stranger.” also the fact that both The Unknowing and Klein’s apotheosis ritual made people in the vicinity 90% stupider. Except one is “we and the skinless puppets rave so hard the fear god descends” and the other is a bunch of gods fighting in some poor guy’s living room so loudly that he wakes up.
Suddenly, we tremble. We look up into the sky and see illusory, thin lines drilling out from our bodies. They extend to an infinite height, extending behind the grayish-white fog. They extend into an ancient palace and land in the hands of a tall figure shrouded in fog.

Atsushi : My entire found family agency is dying one by one in front of me, a person who I thought was chill suddenly got turned into a godlike figure and started destroying everything around him and possibly the entirety of our city, all of this is a scheme operated by some guy with a reality altering piece of writing, im being singled out by him, and hopefully some guy wearing a black coat shows up here in time.
Klein : *chuckles dryly* good luck. Hope that black coat guy doesn’t end up digging your grave up.

If everything hadn’t happened, I’d still be living with Benson and Melissa. I’d be the brother they lost to the best of my abilities. I’d play cards with my colleagues and work hard to protect Tingen. I’d visit you on the weekends so we can talk about history.

I feel like out of all the layers of secrets and concealment Klein hides, the people that would probably be shocked the most if those secrets ever comes to light would be the Moretti siblings.
Imagine you have a brother. Brother was going to go find a typical 9-5 job, but then he suddenly “finds a better job” and boom all your livelihoods improve ‘cause of his earnings. He also starts to cook really well, but you chalk it down to him learning from his friend’s chef. Then one day, he dies on duty. You mourn for him and miss him desperately. You move to a bigger city and occasionally feel like he’s still around, but all you ever see are the new names popping up in the newspaper, such as Gehrman Sparrow, while you focus and continue on your life.
Then, somehow, years into the future, you find out he’s not dead. His grave is literally empty. Not only that, he’s also the great detective of the capital of your literal country, the crazy adventurer feared by pirates, the tycoon who was generous but mysterious and reserved, and a wandering magician granting wishes. Also, he’s a GOD. GOD. OF. A. LITERAL. CHURCH. Then you find out that HE’S NOT EVEN YOUR BROTHER. The brother you grew up with is long dead. It’s a stranger who has been and assimilated into his body and mind since the day your brother died. Oh yeah, that friend he said was the reason he’s a good cook? That friend has been dead even before your “brother”. And you swore you knew him well. He was a history student trying to get a good job for the future. What in the Evernight Goddess’ divine kingdom happened? Oh, yeah, speaking of Evernight, your “brother” is “Her” blessed. By the way, he still hasn’t gone to the theatre with you like he promised.
I don’t know how Melissa managed to find out The Fool = Klein (maybe some angel told her in a dream or Klein directly told her idk) but I can’t even comprehend how she managed to process that information. Like imagine waking up one day and finding out a close relative of yours presumed dead is now a deity. It’s definitely not an average Tuesday afternoon thing.

The one charm I find about LOTM is that due to its vast world building, I can just keep on having thoughts about different things all the time. Like, especially the fourth epoch. All we ever really heard and seen through Klein’s eyes are all these powerful characters descending into madness, not giving a shit about each other, or fighting. Then I remember that at some point in their life they’re acquaintances, one could even call them friends at certain point. Like I crave to see Antigonus interacting with Adam, Amon, or Bethel. Or Alista and Trunsoest before Trunsoest basically betrayed Alista, so on so forth. (Or like- I forgot which epoch it was, but I would love to see Pallez despite being an uncanny horror entity act like a grandpa on steroids to his grandchildren. I can imagine him pulling casual pranks on his descendants and getting a kick out of it. Oh, man.. now I’m feeling something about the way he treats Leonard and the way Leonard instinctively calls Pallez the way his own family would call him..)
It’s like the feeling I get whenever I see High cloud Quintet in HSR. They were something else before this, but so much time had passed that all that remains are ruins. It’s so fascinating.
