My favourite aspect about Rakitin is that he tries so hard to be an influence on everyone around him. He gossips and strives to make them fall while he succeeds, like a force of temptation to sin, but he simply sucks at it.

He tries to make Alyosha fall, he fails, Alyosha didn't even care enough about his involvement. Ivan sees him as nothing but a yapper. He spends months tormenting Mitya and Mitya simply makes jokes and moves on. Grushenka immediately dismisses the idea that Rakitin is upsetting Mitya, surely he's not that relevant. He fails his courtship of Mme. Khokhlakova and his poetry is bad. Only a child takes him seriously. He isn't even that good at being awful.
