I love spending time with the Redwoods… I love their generosity, the many mysteries of their misty canopy… I composed this scene after I witnessed an aurore in the afternoon… pale sun rays, a touch of aged gold and peachy flesh color on a silvery background… Curiously, I had the desire to associate that peaceful scene with a dramatic figure, face like a mask, heavy theater makeup… How could anger strike in such a place ? Maybe it wasn’t anger… more an overwhelming energy… among the giants… I remember having those thoughts… they came in French :

… et j’ai vu mille sourires flotter dans les arbres… vertigineux au-dessus de l’Océan… brumes percées de rayons d’outre-tombe et monde… doucement dédorés, et cependant vivants, pastel délicat de pêche… et champignons de longévité, sceptres ancrés en bordure de sentier… parfums d’écorce indescriptibles…

All those elements… otherworldly vision of a thousand smiles in those atmospheric colors, the scent of the bark mixed with the ocean air, the gigantic polypore mushrooms, Chinese symbol of longevity, evoking as well a Ruyi scepter… are here… more or less… as sun rays are hiding behind the seer’s back…

Mes peintures ne s’inscrivent pas dans un espace-temps unifié, mais compilent le plus souvent les saveurs mémorisées et superposées d’expériences distantes. Ici se mêlent souvenirs d’un musée oriental et du désert de l’Ouest américain, souvenirs de chants de troubadours et réminiscences picturales, la rencontre vraie d’un petit insecte couleur de jade, mon regard languide alors que je rentrais tard au soir et la fantaisie symboliste, style art déco, d’un piédestal aux cœurs embrassés.

Followed by a photograph of a rainy day… Those droplets actually initiated the paintings. I shot this randomly. But when I saw the picture on my screen, I immediately understood that a Lady was held captive in this melancholic grayish droplet… It recalled some medieval visions… In particular, Agnes Sorel, head inclined, breastfeeding… No baby here, just her breast exposed.
