Update on this, I buckled down and read the entirety of “A Rider’s Life” by StoryDreamBeliever and it was pretty much exactly what I wanted, but it hasn’t sated my craving for more

Since I’m still thinking about Murtagh, I guess I’ll share one of the ideas I’ve got bouncing around in my head.
I hope you’ve heard of the Regression trope because that’s what this is - what if Murtagh and Thorn died somehow, the specifics don’t matter at the moment, Murtagh woke up young again, maybe after his mother died, maybe before, both have interesting implications. Of course Murtagh would have to get Thorn’s egg somehow, maybe he’d use his future knowledge to steal it out from under Galbatorix’ nose, not even he would suspect a child to have stolen it. Obviously Thorn will have regressed as well, maybe he would hatch the moment he regressed and gone to Murtagh himself? One thing I’m particularly interested in would be Murtagh’s interactions with Brom while knowing who he is, one funny idea I had is one where Murtagh suddenly shows up on Garrow’s doorstep with the only explanation being that he ‘wanted to be with his brother’ Brom doing a double take upon seeing them together would be hilarious.
Unfortunately I don’t have the wherewithal to write this myself, I’d have to reread the entire series and I have an allergic reaction to the beginning of series I’ve already read before, don’t ask me why I don’t have an answer for you.

Did you think I was done with this? Wrong, one thing I’ve been thinking about recently is that I’d have to make it so Murtagh and Thorn got taught by Oromis and Glaedr, I don’t know how but I need that to happen. Oromis and Glaedr would be such a good stabilizing influence for them and it would be such great closure.

thorn can't easily leave in broad daylight. nasuada waits up with him to talk to murtagh. she and thorn become bros.
murtagh doesn't get back til well into the night. goes to sleep under thorn's wing like he usually does. thorn's annoyed at murtagh and doesn't tell him nasuada fell asleep there hours ago.
