Mythica, Quest for Heroes (Movie 1) – Thoughts
Today, I decided to give the Mythica movie series another go based on the recommendation of one of my lovely anons. I had previously watched the first movie some years ago, I can’t really remember why I didn’t continue with it, maybe I got distracted with other things, maybe I wasn’t that impressed with it, who knows? But I’m giving the series another go at it.
The first Mythica movie is Quest for Heroes and even though I said earlier that when I first watched it, there was a possibility I wasn’t impressed with it…well, that’s not the case anymore. I really liked this movie.
I love worlds that have a magic based system plus a magic-based system with actual rules to it. I appreciate writers who don’t use magic as only a plot device or a maguffin and actually make it into their own character, if you will. I’m looking at you, Shadowhunters, with your non-existent magic system rules and ridiculous OP magic.
But the main pull this movie had for me was that it was essentially part 1 of The Hero’s Journey. It’s not a complete Hero’s Journey story, I imagine that’s what the other films are about. But it definitely flows like the beginning of a Hero’s Journey. And Hero’s Journey is one of my favorites story types to read. Indeed, my favorite Star Wars movie is Episode 4. I love meeting the hero and seeing them become the hero.
I wouldn’t say that this is a perfect film. I definitely feel like the pacing was a little off in certain parts. There’s parts where they’re constantly talking about never leaving their friends behind and while I appreciate the theme, I dont feel like we spend enough time with the characters interacting with each other to truly feel like those kinds of declarations were earned. But I can give a pass on it because the chemistry between these characters were so good. Just beat for beat, humor bit by humor bit, all of the characters (and the actors, themselves) were able to deliver on it and I could believe these people had the potential to care about one another.
I also love our heroine, Marek. She just has this real childlike exuberance throughout the entire move about going on this grand adventure and her enthusiasm for it is just so contagious and relatable and I love it. The actress also has some great facial expressions, and I don’t mean that in a bad way or anything. Every now and then when something ridiculous happens, she’ll give these expressions and I’ll just laugh because she’s so relatable in that moment.
This is a SyFy movie so of course, you can expect all the low budget quirks that usually accompany a SyFy film. But it certainly doesn’t detract from my enjoyment in this film in any way. In fact, it kind of makes me love it even more. I love being able to chuckle a little when I see a character get knocked out from a blow that it was super obvious that it never even connected with. Or the scene being cut and you suddenly see a stuntman go flying. I love stuff like that. Reminds me of my love for the Power Rangers franchise (yes, I do still watch Power Rangers, don’t judge, we all have our vices).
This is a film about a girl dreaming of an adventure and becoming a hero, she assembles a rag team and they all work together on becoming heroes for their own selfish reasons and it was very enjoyable to watch, but also along the way finding friendship and companionship with each other. Really, its everything I love.
Mythica, The Dark Spore (Movie 2) – Thoughts
I finished up on the second Mythica movie, The Dark Spore. And my consensus on this film is I liked it significantly less than the first one. It was a lot less fun than the first one and there were a lot of things going on I didn’t quite understand. There were leaps of character development that I didn’t feel was particularly earned. This film kind of felt like a jumbled mess of ideas that were never really cultivated all the way to closure. It had a lot of ideas that could’ve been interesting but it lacked development and follow-through.
With all that said, I did still enjoy it. The characters are still fun even if their character development was very weirdly done here. The world just keeps on getting more interesting and I really enjoy the soundtrack. I love how the soundtrack employs the usage of electric guitar. You don’t typically get sounds like that mixed in films like these and it really adds something to the atmospere.
Even though I was a little bit more critical on this film, I’m still greatly enjoying this franchise.
Mythica, The Necromancer (Movie 3) – Thoughts
Now that I’ve dried all my tears, I can now talk about Mythica Movie 3, The Necromancer. And spoiler alert: It gets real depressing.
First off, visually, this film was far above what the other two were. You can tell this film had a much higher budget. There were some extremely beautiful shots. The special effects were much better, even the fight choreography was a step above what it’s been previously. I imagine with a bigger budget they were able to get more of an expensive production crew.
Story wise, this was a huge step above from what we got in Movie 2, The Dark Spore. We had plot arcs that were followed through, we had character arcs that were followed through although, unfortunately, one followed through to a very depressing ending but that’s the nature of The Hero’s Journey story, though. Part of what makes a hero a hero is the nature of sacrifice. Of the group, Teela was probably the one I carried the most apathy towards but it was still really sad and I cried like a baby.
All in all, this was a much better film, I greatly enjoyed it. Plus one of the more annoying antagonists finally got their come-uppance so I’m so glad I hopefully won’t have to deal with him in later films. Although, necromancy is a big part of this story, so I guess its a possibility the dude could come back. But I’ll take the win here.
Sad as the ending may have been, it did fit with the character arc and I’m very excited to see how it drives the characters in the remaining two films.
Mythica, The Iron Crown (Movie 4) – Thoughts
Everyone, I’m so excited to talk about this film. I LOVED this one! It was so much fun, so zany and crazy and ridiculous…really, everything I need in an adventure movie.
While I’ve enjoyed all of the films so far, this one was definitely my favorite. The first had a really awesome introduction to the world, it was a light, fun adventure. However, we kind of lost that feel in Dark Spore and Necromancer, but this film had it in spades. It was so much fun to watch. It kind of took me back to the days when I first watched The Mummy and The Mummy Returns (which are my favorite adventure movies, btw). Just fun.
We had some new antagonists along with the old antagonists and they were just as ridiculous and it was amazing.
We had a strong plotline throughout the movie with strong character arcs. My favorite character is still Dagen but the MVP for this film has got to be Zombie Girl. Because in a ragtag group of heroes wherein you have a mage, thief, and warrior…so of course a zombie fits right in. This new character just added so much more zaniness to the story and I’m so relieved that she wasn’t legitimately killed. I was like Dagen and I was really sad when Marek left Zombie Girl for dead. But she showed up at the end of the movie and I’m absolutely elated and I hope she shows up in the 5th movie. She just completes this team, really.
But this was a great movie, I absolutely loved it and I’m excited to see what movie 5 has in store for me.
Mythica, Godslayer (Movie 5) – Thoughts
Yup, that’s it. I’ve finished the Mythica series. It was a wild ride filled with highs and lows, but it as so much fun! So here we go with my thoughts for the 5th movie, Godslayer.
While not necessarily as fun as Iron Crown, this one was still enjoyable. Iron Crown hit the humor beats real well and Godslayer hit the dramatic beats real well. All in all, I’m satisfied with how it ended. Of course, there’s a part of me that wished Marek and Dagen hadn’t made the ultimate sacrifice and they could’ve lived their life adventuring and “raising” Zombie Girl but it’s alright. Them living happily ever after in the underworld works just as well. And perhaps it’s best that Dagen didn’t return to the land of the living…it would break his heart to see Zombie Girl turn into the spoiled rich brat she used to be.
I’m sad Zombie Girl didn’t get a chance to play a bigger part in the movie but I can understand why. It takes away a lot of the suspense if you have a character who’s on par with the enemies you’re fighting. Zombie Girl might’ve been a little OP. But I loved the scene where Dagen threatens the townsfolk with death if they let anything happen to Zombie Girl. As I said before, it’s super interesting that while Zombie Girl had her brain perfectly intact, Dagen found she wasn’t worth protecting but when she became a zombie, he treasured her as if she was his own daughter. So I kind of wished the ending could’ve been Marek, Dagen and Zombie Girl living happily ever after.

Mythica: The Necromancer Fanart.
Just loved the lightning in that scene when Marek went into the cave after the Eel stole the darkspore. Teela then send one of Betyllas beetle to lead her out of the cave.

More Mythica Fanart:
This time it’s Betylla and one of his Beetles. I really liked his character and would have wished to see and get to know more of him.
