Slider got his callsign because he has slid/walked into a sliding door on multiple occasions.

" Hey Y/n how are you?" Maverick a good friend of mine. " I'm as good as I can be right now. " I replied holding Bradley in one arm and trying not to fall apart in front of him. I had just lost my husband and Bradley had lost his father but he was to young to understand that.
"Here I'll take Bradley and you can have some alone time with Goose." Maverick said and I agreed. I fell infront of Nick's grave. " Hi my *cough cough* love I *cough cough cough * miss you. " I said my throat hurting. " Y/n?" A voice asked from behind me. " Hi Icebro. " I replied. " You’re not ok are you?" Iceman asked. " Not even a little." I replied. " I'm trying to stay strong for Bradley but between the heartbreak of losing Nick and my throat cancer I don't know how much longer I'll last. " I said breaking down in Tom's arms. Tom just held me. It reminded of when we were younger he'd always hold me when I was upset.
6 years later so Bradley is now 10
Y/n in the hospital. " You'll be ok right mommy?" Bradley asked. " Of course I will my little crazy Rooster. " I said. " Thank you for bringing him to see me Icebro. " I said and gave him a sign to leave because I wanted to talk to Mav alone. " Of course sis. Come on Roo let's go get ice cream. " Iceman said. " But I want to stay here with mom!" Bradley replied. " We can come back after we get ice cream. " Iceman said and Bradley agreed. Neither of them knowing that would be the last time they both saw her alive.
" Mav I need you to promise me something. " I said in what was barely a whisper. " Anything. " Maverick replied. " Promise me that you won't let Bradley become a pilot. I don't want him to die like his father. Tell my son and brother I love and I'm sorry. Mav this is for you Thank you for always being there when I needed you the most. " I said.
And with that I took my final breath finally joining my Goose after 6 painful years without him I would finally get to see him again.
This scene is not nearly talked about enough. You CANNOT tell me they made this bet before and Mav flirted with a guy before, I mean look at that smirk he gives when goose specifies. I need someone to write that for me, I can write fanfic for shit but I want this.
Just imagine Rooster talking to the Daggers about his childhood and somehow it comes up, but they end up talking about Mav, his ex's, and sex (Rooster hates this). To the belief of the Daggers Mav is a vanillaest, straitest old man you can find.
To the truth, the only one of those that is right is the old part. This man was in the navy in the 80's and that one scene (see a different post I made about that scene)!!!
I have this headcanon that Carole and Mav grew up in the foster system together and in freshman year of highschool they dated, it didn't work out and they decided they would be better as siblings.
Come senior year of highschool he ends up dating Nick, they end up parting ways for whatever reason but they stay really close.
Then bam he introduces ex 1 with ex 2 and baby (yes ladies and gentlemen that is how babies are made don't ask your parents, trust me) and he's got a godson (Nick and Carole did fight for who got him to be his Best Man/Man of Honor. (Yes Carole won)), and Mav he's gotta type.
