“-fucking fairies, man.” Cornelius finished, pointing his cigarette at all of them. Mariah and Gavin glanced at each other, exchanging incredulous looks they weren’t even trying to hide. Everyone else looked very awkward, as if struggling hard not to argue with the expert monster hunter in front of them. Cornelius definitely noticed and his one good eye squinted at them furiously. “You think I’m lying?”

Fiona was the only one brave enough to speak. When she did, her voice was low and gentle, as if she was trying to explain someone dying to a small child. “Uncle, they’re young. They don’t...” She trailed off when he looked away. He was gripping the arm of his chair tightly, to the point that it seemed he might rip it apart. He kept his eyes on the floor for a minute, shoulders rising and falling a tad too quick, before he finally looked back up. When he did, he was glaring.

“You ever deal with fairies?” Cornelius questioned them, making sure to meet eyes with everyone. They all shook their heads. “They’re not all like those shiny things on TV. There’s hundreds of different types and mercy onto you if you piss one off.” Cornelius lit his cigarette and took a drag before continuing. “Sure there’s plenty of weapons against them and there’s a million precautions you can take to keep them happy but you’ll never get rid of them. Not really. They’ll always come back. And those little bastards will lurk around you forever, little eyes staring from the grass or odd fingerprints left on your windows. Scratches on the door, things out of place, bruises you can’t explain. But you know why they’re the most dangerous?” Fiona looked at him, her father’s pain and her own gleaming in her eyes. Cornelius glanced at her but didn’t stare back. “They like humans. For friends, as pets, as,” he swallowed, “lovers. So they take them. Take them to their world, the fae world where time doesn’t exist, and they keep them. For however long they want, or till the human realizes what’s happening and escapes. And all the while the world just keeps going on. So when that person does come back, untouched by time...”

The room seemed to lose all noise. Mariah and Gavin looked around in confusion, not understanding. But everyone else understood. Fiona glanced at them sadly before carefully walking to her uncle and sitting down beside him. He let her take his cigarette. Sitting side by side, they looked like siblings.

With Cornelius being the younger.

“Most dangerous monster? Well, vampires are pretty easy–just carry pencils. Ghosts are mostly irritants, werewolves collapse at silver, and dragons keep to themselves… Naw, it’s one no one expects. It’s–”
