Interviewer: Tell me how this all started.
Deeks, drawing in a breath between his pursed lips: Ooh, that’s an interesting question. Well, I began as a lawyer—you know, wanting to see justice served and all that—but I realized that wasn’t for me, so I applied to the police academy. I didn’t have the easiest time there.
Interviewer: Agent Deeks, perhaps you could just stick to your time here with NCIS.
Deeks: It’s actually Investigator Deeks. Don’t ask me why. Do you want to hear about my first case with NCIS when I was just a detective, my 10 and a half years as a liaison, or my most recent position as an investigator?
Interview, bemused: Whichever you think is most relevant to your work with the agency.
Deeks, pleasantly: Oh, I’d say they’re all relevant. My first case with NCIS really forged my place on the team, though it took some time for everyone to realize my brilliance. As a liaison, I had the pleasure of forging a relationship between NCIS and LAPD for the betterment of both agencies with the intent of reducing miscommunications, errors, and—
Interviewer: Investigator Deeks, are you quoting directly from the handbook?
Deeks: I am a lawyer. It’s kind of our thing.
Interviewer: You’re still a lawyer?
Deeks, shrugging: I like to have options. By the way, page 326 in the handbook has a very critical, and potentially legally disastrous, error which I’d be happy to tell you about if you ask nicely.
Interviewer: I think we’re done here.
