"Promise Me" Series - JJ Maybank x OC Series

Ellie loved her life in The Cut—there was no question about it—despite the endless cycle of an identity crisis, imposter syndrome, and…mild to moderate racism.
Until Ellie’s father, died while at sea, doing some research on the Royal Merchant. What’s worse, he never would have been in that situation…had it not been for Big John Routledge’s insistence. A bitter reality reminded by Ellie and her mom as they tried to navigate their lives without him.
Since then, her mom forbade any mention of the famous shipwreck at their house. His office locked away, Big John scorned, and a family with a gaping hole that was Charlie Chen.
Later, John B. searches for the Royal Merchant’s lost gold, and Ellie launches an investigation of her own, questioning the legitimacy of her father’s death. Soon, the carefully woven story of his death reveals itself as…murder.
Ellie is determined to rip apart the web of lies that is the serene façade of Outer Banks, bit by bit, and until she becomes part of something much bigger than she initially thought.
But while she seeks answers, is she prepared to reopen raw wounds? Or will she end up pushing away the people who have always been there for her?

ELLIE STARED AT THE WORDS ETCHED IN THE SMOOTH SLAB OF CONCRETE. She wondered if she stared hard and long enough, the words would somehow change to a different name…and it wouldn’t be her Ba’s name, placed on the small hill behind their home, with his wife and only daughter standing in silence as a shaman from the mainland and his droning is drowned out by the heavy blanket of grief hanging down on everyone.
“He wouldn’t have wanted a hill,” Ellie wept to herself. “He would’ve wanted to be buried underneath the black locust tree.”
He loved that tree. He planted it for her, after all. It was their tree.
Sensing her grief, Bellie, their pitbull, nudged her head against Ellie’s legs in a show of comfort. Whispering a small thanks to the pup, Ellie turned to her mom and felt her heart breaking all over again. Ellie couldn’t remember a time when her mom wasn’t the most beautiful person in the world. Because right now, as she stood in her wedding dress, Ellie wasn’t sure if she had ever met anyone who looked so…defeated.
Ba would often joke about how he fell in love with his wife, at first sight, the moment he heard her melodious laugh and saw her sunshine smile across Chapel Hill’s dining hall. And then he would tell her the story of the very moment he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her.

THE VIEW OF THE OCEAN WASN’T THE BEST ELLIE HAD EVER SEEN, BUT AS THE SUN INCHED TOWARD DUSK, IT MADE HER FINGERS ITCH TO DRAW THE WAY THE LIGHT DANCED ON THE WATER. She put her hair in a loose ponytail and sat down before throwing down her sandals as they clicked on the deck’s hardwood floor. She changed out of her dress after barely escaping the interrogation dinner at the Island Club with her Aunt Cecelia and Uncle Mitchell.

HE SMALL WOODEN BANGKA SILENTLY FLOATED ON THE WATER’S GLASSY SURFACE, ITS OARS RESTING IDLE AT ITS SIDES AS ELLIE SAT ON THE BOW SEAT. The water was unnaturally still, acting as a mirror to reflect the overcast sky above. Ellie stared at what was supposed to be her reflection, not this image of a person floating on the water.

HURRICANE AGGIE WAS A BITCH, AND YOU COULD QUOTE HER ON THAT. Ellie didn’t bother to lie on her back. She knew she wasn’t getting any sleep with the pounding rain and howling winds banging on her window, fighting to break the glass and sweep her into the storm with the thunder and lightning. Instead, she curled into a sitting ball with Sami curled beside her. Her knees remained tucked underneath her Dad’s oversized Chapel Hill zip-up hoodie with her comforter wrapped around her like an extra shield.

You'll Be Safe - Chapter Four

WHILE THE POGUES KNEW THE SURGE HIT THE CUT THE HARDEST, THEY HADN’T EXPECTED TO FIND ANYTHING WORSE THAN WHAT THEY’D SEEN ALREADY. They had expected some water damage, sure. But some parts of the roofs fell into the rooms, tree branches scattered around the building, and even some doors had been knocked down. The motel’s sign that was initially on the roof was knocked to the lawn with one of the poles underneath a boat.

You'll Be Safe - Chapter Six

ELLIE DOUBLE-, TRIPLE-, AND QUADRUPLE-CHECKED THE MIRROR TEN MINUTES BEFORE SHE AND HER MOM NEEDED TO LEAVE TO MEET HER COUSIN AT HIS NEW HOUSE. While she usually wouldn’t have any issues leaving the house in her favorite tea-length dress, she couldn’t help but worry. The massive bruise on her back was still there. The deep purple and dark blue blotches were painful to look at, especially with how they contrasted against her skin. The only upside was that no one else seemed to be able to see it but her, as evidenced when her mom came in barging not even a few minutes after Ellie had run up to her.
