I remember a few months back I was talking to my chemist about what I could do for pain management as she didn’t like the amount of codeine i was purchasing. She told me that the biggest problem (besides addictiveness) is the paracetamol.

When I asked what to take as an alternative, do you know what she told me to take?

paracetamol.

The codeine pill had the exact same amount (according to the box) of  paracetamol as the regular paracetamol.

And she sad this with a straight face. I told I would go to the doctors. (that's a story for a different day thought.

another peculiarity of codeine is that because it’s a prodrug for morphine, the amount of morphine your body makes is genetic. some people don’t have the enzyme at all so codeine doesn’t do anything, while some people are so sensitive to it that the smallest OTC dose is dangerous. yet they give you codeine on the reasoning that it is safer than morphine, which will always have the amount of morphine it says on the box. and because they are still too frightened about “misuse” they add even more dangerous drugs like paracetamol, when most overdoses are already accidental overdoses due to ignorance. all of this seems profoundly backwards to me.
