“forgive yukching,” ho-yin says, “he doesn’t know how to present himself in front of women as beautiful as my family’s sunkwan, yet.”

his remark elicits a peal of laughter from his friends and a rosy warmth to seep into his younger sister’s fair cheeks. sunkwan nudges hoyin’s knee in a silent plea of please don’t embarrass me anymore, to which he responds with a slow, lazy smile. “and this, is my sister’s 好姐妹, heidi ng.”

“it’s so lovely to be able to meet musicians and artists from hong kong’s well-loved conservatory,” heidi drawls, buying herself just a few more moments to answer ho-yin’s question. i’ve been granted entry today is what she wants to say. “we both sang well and have high hopes of being selected by the company,” is what comes out, and the lie hurts. of the sixty-seven skilled singers who auditioned today, the company had given only her a contract. the rest of the results were to be announced in a week.

“congratulations, ladies!” ho-yin pours the newcomers a glass of whiskey each and bades them drink. sunkwan down her share swiftly, leaving only heidi to muse wistfully at her own. she regards the liquid with brevity—once, twice, thrice—before lifting and tipping the frosted glass to her lips.

a lady must never drink vodka, whiskey, or rum in the presence of strangers.

her glass returns to the cool surface of their table, empty.

wai-lam proceeds to light cigarettes for the newcomers, and for a moment, their group simply sits in a contemplative silence, smoking. “are you not going to take one, heidi?” sunkwan queries. “your father’s not here to nag you.” heidi looks up and peers at sunkwan, follows the tendrils of smoke that curl out from her slender fingers. her gaze flickers hesitantly between the two as if she’s trying to weigh her options.  

as a child, her father taught her about public images and how the safest (and only) place for her quirks were deep inside of her. he taught her to trade play-time in sand pits for practicing cursive and authority for submission. she learned to retreat into herself in front of strangers and to grace them with charming smiles that she can never quite call her own, but how soon until your safe-home becomes a prison cell and your bed begins to grow manacles and chains for a spine? how long until you realize you don’t know where you start and where the image you’ve created for yourself ends? how long until you lose your identity altogether? she doesn’t like thinking about this because her answers always and only ever are: soon.

when the haze clears, heidi rises to her feet and with an imploring tug, gathers the coughing-fit boy beside her, yukching, to his unsteady soles as well. “i’d rather dance.”

“you’ll dance with me.” it’s not a question, it’s a statement. and softer, “won’t you?”

in this room, there are only friends, the light-hearted chatter and laughter that passes time between drinks and smokes, and a beginning she hopes is the real beginning.

father and his endless berating can wait until she returns home.
