I have the head cannon that the poem Annabel Lee by edger Allen Poe in the BSD universe was written about ranpo but Poe made it sound like it was about a past lover so ranpo never found out. It worked because ranpo isn’t interested in romantic poetry but after reading the poem himself he figured it out.

this is from the ship requests over on twitter, as i take a short break from drawing the hunting dogs. i genuinely had fun with this and it was a breath of fresh air i definitely needed for the sake of my art journey.

Detective Trio (Poe x Ranpo x PM (neutral) reader)
since season 4 is out and I’ve already binged it all hehe I thought some cute fluff of a little mystery gang. Also just saying Ranpo has been one of my favorites from the beginning so seeing his backstory made me so happy. Might add a part two if asked… Anyways here you go filthy animals!!!!
You messaged the groupchat, “Hey fellas! A new bookstore opened up in town and they have a cafe! Please come with me I don’t want to go alone ☺️” with a small grin on your face, you pressed send.
The phone immediately dinged as you just closed it, looking at message Ranpo was the first to respond, “Do they have sweets? If so I’m down fr” a little giggle. All that boy ever cared about was food. Poe’s response was very blend, “I wouldn’t mind going.” Typing out a reply to Ranpo’s question to make sure he won’t skip.
“I believe they do, Ranpo. But if we are all down to go I’m available tomorrow evening.” Pressing send and placing my phone on my work desk trying to finish my latest case. Seeing as all of my mystery buddies are from different organizations some would believe it was awkward but it wasn’t, we never brought up work only books and Poe would show his new project. It felt so refreshing to have friends that share a liking with my hobbies.
You grab your bag with files and got ready to leave. As you were leaving the warehouse, you decided to check the chat,

P - “Evening, like what time evening because I don’t want to be too early?
R - “No need to stress Poe, actually bigger question how can I get there? I hate buses and trains they’re to complicated!”
P - “I don’t have a car but maybe Ranpo we could meet up and go together via Taxi”
R - “Yeah but we could just force (Y/N) to take us because they have a car and then we wouldn’t have to pay!!”
P - “mm I guess we could ask but from the lack of replies they probably are finishing work.”
“Wow these moochers” you whispered under your breath giggling as you’re walking down the corridor to leave. “Ahem Mx. (Y/N) what’s the giggle about?” The man spoke but you didn’t want to look up and see his face. “Hello boss… nothing just a few personal thoughts…” looking at Mori’s shoes trying not to break underneath the stare he has. “Hm that’s nice. Did you finish the case I’ve assigned you?” You nodded at the boss’s question trying to finish this interaction as soon as possible. “Ah thank you I’ll take the files now then, also take tomorrow off if you already finished..” You finally made eye contact with the man and reached into your bag taking out the file. Handing it to him with a question, “Are you sure you don’t need anything tomorrow?” It wasn’t that you like working it was that you needed the money. He nodded his head and walked off, you should have known not to question his judgment. You just walked out to your car not wanting to look stupid.
Finally in your car, you felt safe enough to answer the messages.
“Okay moochers I’ll give you two a ride, I’ll pick you up at the ADA if that’s fine with you Ranpo.” Pressing send and putting the phone in a car holder to speed out the parking lot.

Being home was such a nice atmosphere, the feeling you get from coming home after working with a deadly mafia that constantly overworks and threatens you is a different type of relief. You planned on checking your phone after making dinner, showering, and getting ready for bed. But that didn’t work after you kept hearing it go off in your bedroom. Walking over and seeing new 6 messages from the chat.
R- “Wait I FORGOT I DON’T HAVE MONEY”
R- “POE pleaseeeee pleaseeeee pay for me I’ll pay you back”
P- “The other day you were bragging about having enough money for snacks”
R- “EXACTLY I SPENT IT ALL ON SNACKS”
R- “IT WAS A GOOD CHOICE I HAVE NO REGRETS!”
R- “POE I KNOW YOU ARE READING MY MESSAGES!!! ANSWER ME!”
Goodness these two boys could never get enough of their own little games. You made sure to put extra money in your wallet before going to bed for the night. Deciding what time to set your alarm and finally hitting dream land.

* The next morning *
Finally ready, you looked in your full body mirror to check your outfit. Grabbing your keys and heading out the door. Opening your sliver SUV driver door ready to head off for your trip. Starting the car, reading your mental list of everything you have to make sure you didn’t forgot anything.
Outside the ADA office honking your horn to tell Ranpo you’re here about 5 minutes early. Ranpo walked to the window looking at the window waving seeing you wave back. With a loud giggle from the shorter boy he says,”Come on Poe, they’re here” before the boys can leave, Dazai looks out the window seeing you hanging out your driver window. Dazai makes an ahem to catch Ranpo’s attention, “Ranpo what are you doing with a detective from the Port Mafia?” Dazai’s glare was sweet but laced with questionable intentions. “Oh (Y/N) I don’t see a problem with their occupation. I’m the world’s greatest detective I would be able to see if they had bad goals. So (Y/N), Poe, and me are going on a trip.” Ranpo set things straight and walks out with Poe. “Let’s not tell (Y/N) about what Dazai said. My friends care about me so they have the right to ask questions, but (Y/N) shouldn’t feel as if their job affects our friendship…” Ranpo tells Poe before walking out the building to your car.
Connecting your music to the car radio and waiting for the boys to figure out seating arrangements. Ended up in a fight and you had to pick. Ranpo in the backseat in the middle which left Poe the passenger seat. “OH Come on (Y/N) again with (fav artist) don’t you have any better taste!!!” Ranpo whined as if he didn’t compliment your music a few days ago when you sent him a song. “I think this music is quite good..” Ranpo said quietly. “WOW don’t be a suck up POE BE YOUR OWN MAN!!” Ranpo said with a grin and you couldn’t help howling with laughter.
Pulling into the parking lot of the library, which to our pleasure was mostly empty. You and Poe share a dislike for public eyes to stare. Turning off the car and hoping of the car with the boys, putting your keys into your pocket, “What genre of book are we getting first?” You say thinking really hard. “I want to look into the mystery of course” Poe said walking behind the car to be beside us. Ranpo made a face then spoke, “Maybe thriller I don’t know first I’m checking the menu” with a laugh you three walked in.

Edgar had already finished his classes for the day. He was now going back there to pick up Ranpo and do random stuff since there wasn't any plan for it. The young writer arrived at the school and waited for the other to finish last class.
After standing there for a bit he saw his shorter friend leaving through the door. Edgar waved and Ranpo responded with same.
-Hey ed!
-Hello Ranpo
-Where are we going? I'm hungry.
-Maybe we can go to the store behind school. I wanted to buy some flowers too.
-Alright, let's go!
They left through the gate and made their way to the shop. After few minutes of walking and talking they arrived at the store. They entered and imidietly saw the flower stand and walked over to it.
-Ranpo look, they have my favorite flowers- Edgar said as he pointed at a bouquet yellow tulips.
-Oh cool! But why did you wanted to buy flowers anyway?
-oh! I wanted to put them on the living and give them to my mom.
-Mhm. Let's go get food now.
They strolled into an aile with baked goods and started looking around.
-Hey ed! How about we get some donuts? Look at the pink ones, they have heart sprinkles on top! Let's get those.
-Okay let me get a bag- He walked away for a few seconds and came back with a paper bag- How many are we taking?
-hmm... 4! 2 for you and 2 for me. I just need to count if I have enough money.
-I can pay for them. Dont worry.
-Realy? Thank youu- Ranpo smiled widely
They took donuts and flowers and made their way to the cashier. After paying they left the shop.
-Where are we going now?-Ranpo asked
-We can go sit at the rocks over there.
-Good idea:)
They sat on the rocks. Edgar put the flowers on the ground next to their bags. Ranpo handed Edgar one of the donuts and started eating his own.
-Mhm! They're realy good.
-I know I tried them before- Ranpo said.
Ed looked at the flowers.
-hm. I have an idea.
He tried grabbing the bouquet without getting up and after some struggling he made it. He pulled out on of the tulips and handed it to the other male.
-There you go. For you- Ed said with a smile.
-Thank you- He took the flower from his hand.
-How about we take some photos? We can share them in the group chat later.
-Sure.
-Oh no, my phone died.
-We can use my phone- He gave Poe his phone.
-Alright
They posed for the pic with donuts and flowers. Ranpo tried to cover his face with his hair but failed while Ed's face for once was visible.
-I look like on crack- Edgar commented after seeing his face in the photo. Ranpo took his phone back to send the pictures.
-Are we still sending them on the chat?
-Yep-Ranpo quickly opened the chat- What are we typing?
-Maybe something like ' Platonic date with..' and then you'll tag me?
-Mhm- Ranpo wrote it down- Is it correct?
-Yep.
-Okay.
Few minutes later one person replied_the others were propably busy_

Ran already finished second donut and have the bag with the last one to Poe
-Thanks, I'll finish it later.
-Yeah, let's go now. Its cold.
They gathered their stuff making sure they hadn't left any litter behind.
-Do you have everything?... Let's go- Edgar turned to start walking but left a tug on his sleve he looked into the dirention of his 'friend' he felt lips press again his cheek.
-Thank you for donuts and flower and the whole time.
-Y-you're welcome- Edgar said with a slitly red face.-L-let's go now.
They spent the rest of their way home on talking about anything
-Do you want to walk me home?-Ranpo asked when they walked up to the place they would've parted ways.
-Sure. Lead the way.
Few minutes of walking they were at Ranpo's door step as always there were cats around and Ran imidietly went to pet them.
-Alright. I'll be going. I have some stuff to do.
-Okay! Bye bye.
-Bye, I'll try not to get lost-Ed said as he vanished behind the corner. (he isn't in that part of the city often)
His way home was calm he listened to some music on headphones and finished his donut. He got home safely and after that day had more outings like that and made the rocks their official meeting spot.

the sugar-coating of ranpoe
as we're all familiar with, ranpoe is a pretty popular ship in the bsd fandom and is often said to be a very healthy/fluffy ship. however, fanon ranpoe is honestly an incredibly sugar-coated version of how they really are in canon. ranpoe is not the fluffy innocent ship people think they are, and are in fact almost as bad as many other ships in bsd. let me explain.
first, i want to talk about the babyfication of ranpoe *in canon*. yes i know authors can't mischaracterise their own characters, but that doesn't mean they can't choose to portray them through a warped view. in ranpoe's case, it's also the authors themselves who choose to portray ranpoe as a comic relief duo. like, the way poe commits (attempted) murder is so unserious? and ranpo (as usual) just... doesn't seem to care that poe tried to kill him? and encourages him to try again?
compared to skk for example, who when they try to kill each other it's actually portrayed with some kind of intense hatred and/or murderous intent.
of course i'll never know what the authors were thinking, but they probably chose to portray ranpoe as such with the intention of ranpoe being a fluffy crack ship. which is fine, because they're the authors obviously and they can do what they want, and this also gives ranpoe their own unique dynamic. however, the issue with this is that it causes people to be completely blinded towards what's actually happening between ranpoe, and only see them through the rose-tinted glasses which the authors have handed to us. hence, i'm going to objectively recount everything that happened with ranpoe.
around six years ago, ranpo beat poe in a battle of wits.
poe went into this reclusive state where he refused to interact with other people, and is implied to have been suicidal/depressed.
eventually, poe decides to plot his revenge by writing a novel in order to kill ranpo and obtain the praise and glory that ranpo has.
six years pass.
poe meets ranpo again, and tries to kill him. he fails.
they end up establishing a mutual relationship where poe writes novels, and ranpo gives him feedback. poe no longer seems to want revenge.
fast forward to chapter 80, by this time ranpo has asked poe for help regarding a lot of things, all agency-related.
one, ranpo said he wanted a showdown to trick poe into writing a novel for him, which he then used against chuuya.
he asked poe to write a novel in about ~30 mins to corner mushitaro.
in the volume 20 omake, ranpo also asked poe to write a novel to house 3 people by the next day.
ranpo asked poe to help him rescue the agency members in chapter 80. poe helped to snipe the lock on kunikida's cell, and prepare a vehicle to save yosano.
in the recent chapters, it was also mentioned that ranpo had poe write a novel to trap fukuchi.
based on this brief (??) summary, you can probably see a bunch of things which are not very right. first of all, poe experienced severe withdrawal after losing his match with ranpo, and for six years his only goal was to defeat him. secondly, poe is doing a LOT of things for ranpo, which aren't really reciprocated. there might also be other things, but i will just focus on these two.
1. poe is heavily reliant on ranpo.
as you can see, poe is a pretty fragile person. he lost one match to ranpo and basically gave up on life. he became overly reliant on ranpo's existence to affirm his own, and even now he dreads the possibility of ranpo dying and leaving him without a rival. and while poe who has almost no friends is entirely dependent on ranpo, ranpo always has the agency to support him, so he isn't all that emotionally dependent on poe. he still needs poe for his novels and such, but it's not often that he shows/says that poe is really important to him as a person. however, ranpo does clearly appreciate poe's intellect and abilities and praised him before. ranpo never praises people, so this is a pretty big occurrence.
in this sense, poe really needs ranpo but ranpo doesn't realllly need poe (or at least he doesn't show it).
2. poe does a lot for ranpo but not the other way round. i think this kind of speaks for itself tbh. poe helps ranpo with a whole lot of things, and ranpo doesn't give him much in return. obviously there is something wrong with this, but because poe is so eager to impress/help ranpo, he seems to have no issues with this.
as you may (unfortunately) know, because of the above reasons some people say that ranpoe's relationship is "toxic" or "abusive", but i believe this is inaccurate. based on a few dictionaries, the word "toxic" carries the meaning of unpleasant, extremely harsh, malicious or harmful. however, ranpo asking poe for help with a lot of things isn't done with the intention to harm or assert control over poe. he just really needs poe's help and poe is willing as well as capable. also, he probably isn't aware that he's overworking poe because he's not sensitive to other people's emotional needs or wants. and poe doesn't do all this because ranpo is threatening him, he's just very (overly) eager to do it.
despite everything, ranpoe isn't completely horrible. they're not the best, but they certainly aren't the worst. none of them seem to visibly hold grudges or have issues with the other, and are generally happy with their current arrangement. they share each other's interests and provide the other with the intellectual stimulus that they need.
also, the authors' "sugar-coating" of their relationship isn't completely off. due to the nature of their personalities, it still makes sense that they can get along. after all, ranpo was once held at gunpoint when he was 14 and didn't give a flip so i doubt he'd really care about poe attempting to murder him. and on poe's side, i think he's always been fragile and a little pathetic so this is pretty normal for him.
and even though their relationship is kinda unbalanced, they do hold each other in equally high regard (including ranpo, although he doesn't show it. he doesn't really show anything) this is also why i think ranpoe isn't an idol-fan relationship. parasocial relationships are one-sided relationships, where one person extends emotional energy, interest and time, and the other party, the persona, is completely unaware of the other’s existence. poe definitely extends a lot of energy in helping ranpo, i don't deny. but the baseline for a parasocial relationship is that one person is almost unaware of the other. before guild arc this was true, but right now ranpo is very much aware of poe's existence, and admires poe just as much as poe does him. hence, i don't think ranpoe is a parasocial relationship.
overall, ranpoe is still heavily sugar-coated by the fandom and authors who don't really acknowledge the issues within their relationship. however the rose-tinted glasses don't completely warp everything, and their dynamic, both canon and fanon, isn't totally off from how it should be, based on my knowledge of their personalities. they're just a silly little couple doing their silly gay things. everything is fine (half lying)
