Kimi Had A Hard Enough Time Keeping Her Eyes Open After Working Seventeen Hours Straight. It Seemed Fitting

Kimi had a hard enough time keeping her eyes open after working seventeen hours straight. It seemed fitting her walk home would be interrupted in another violent attempt, and sent enough shock through her that she stared tensed against the wall as the man stopped any further profane remarks from the stranger who had approached her.

"Nothing to be sorry for...thank you," she managed to get out, blinking tiredly and adjusting her bag over her shoulder. "Just some asshole trying to ruin someone's night. My bad luck that I was the target tonight."

"That's not how you treat a pretty face." Fingers were wrapped easily around the strange man's throat, making sure he'd have a hard time getting mouthy. "Ah, ah. Not enough air for profanities?" Fujitaka mocked with a faint chuckle, eventually letting his eyes wander over the other. "I'm sorry to have you witness something so ugly, darling."

"I Don't Understand..." Perhaps Kimi Was Too Exhausted To Fully Comprehend What The Other Person Was

"I don't understand..." Perhaps Kimi was too exhausted to fully comprehend what the other person was saying, blinking back her tears though they weren't from sadness. Her sleepiness was beginning to make her eyes instinctively water. She wiped at her face, as if that would wipe away some of the exhaustion. "What are you trying to say?"

Kimi had accepted she'd have to find a different way home than the train. With the pile of folders still left for her to work on, none of which belonged to her so one of her coworkers could get home to their family on time, she doubted she'd be getting home anytime soon.

Junji's company was the only thing that kept her going on these late nights. She took the food he offered and started to eat while working, opting to ignore his words because she knew he was right, she just wasn't willing to say it out loud yet.

"I might have to come in tomorrow, too," she mumbled under her breath even though it was supposed to be her first day off in three weeks. "If I don't finish these tonight, they'll be waiting tomorrow. Why don't you get home, I promise if I finish these we can do something tomorrow."

Kimi Had Accepted She'd Have To Find A Different Way Home Than The Train. With The Pile Of Folders Still

"I made a joke, saying if Death was coming for us, you'd still find a way to reschedule Death just to finish your work. But... yeah, never mind." Junji scoffs, realizing Kimi isn’t in the mood for his dark humor—she’s practically falling asleep at her desk. His office is just across the street from hers, and if they both stood by their windows at the same time, they could see each other. She works in data, while he’s at the Daily Japan, the journal. They bonded over coffee breaks outside and, more often, late-night work sessions—he, buried under a pile of pointless articles his higher-ups dump on him, and she, staying late to cover for her colleagues. They have similar days and nights. "I swung by the 7/11 and picked up those onigiris you like. I know you haven't eaten yet," he says, settling into a chair in her office, placing the paper bag down. He grabs a folder from her towering pile, understanding immediately that it’s extra work passed off by the slackers around her. "You know, you can tell Watanabe to go screw himself sometimes." But they both know she can't—just like he can't tell his bosses to stop wasting his talent. "You sure you don’t want to call it a night? You look exhausted Kim. We can still catch the last train."

Kimi Rolled Her Eyes, Though Her Face Was Directed Down At The Papers So She Didn't Know If Junji Saw

Kimi rolled her eyes, though her face was directed down at the papers so she didn't know if Junji saw her reaction to his words or not. "What are you talking about? We're getting fucked right now," she said, gesturing to the endless work surrounding them that was taking over her night. But he had a point -- she deserved a day off and spend it with someone, so she needed to get it done and quickly.

She helped direct him on what to do and how to do it, working efficiently despite how tired she looked. The food he brought seemed to help.

"Whether or not you see it, we both have lives. Problem is that work is our life, so we don't have anything else to add to it. I don't do much in the way of sleeping anymore. Dinners are whatever you bring me," she admitted with a shrug, attention going back to her work.

Dedicated To Their Work, They Both Are, Even If, Sadly, Neither Has Received The Recognition They Deserved.
Dedicated To Their Work, They Both Are, Even If, Sadly, Neither Has Received The Recognition They Deserved.

Dedicated to their work, they both are, even if, sadly, neither has received the recognition they deserved. That’s how it goes in big corporations, after all. Along with the 7/11 konbini he bought for her, there are a few drinks. “Come on, you say that, but if I swing by tomorrow, I know you’re going to pull the same stunt. I’ve caught on by now,” he says, his tone light. He gets it. Balancing work and a personal life in their world feels almost impossible. He gives her a soft smile. “Also, I’ve seen dead people in my dreams who looked more alive than you do right now. If we finish all this, you can take tomorrow off, yeah?” Though he’s a journalist and not in data, he helps where he can, taking on the small, easier tasks, much like an assistant would, while she handles the biggest part of the work. Cracking open a can, he surveys the mess of papers. “So, what can I do? Proofread and archiving like the other time? This pile?” he asks, already reaching for the folder on top. He stays, sipping his drink, helping her out as she eats and works—nothing new to them. Flipping through a file, he chats with her between sips. “Ever thought about what our lives would be like if we actually had one?” His tone is cynical, but there's a faint smile as he stays focused on the papers. “What do people even do when they don't work? Go back to their significant other? Have dinner together with them? Watch TV? Fuck? Fall asleep in their bed?”

"My Name Is Kimi." Usually She'd Be More Polite. This Man, Detective Apparently, Had Just Saved Her From

"My name is Kimi." Usually she'd be more polite. This man, detective apparently, had just saved her from an asshole trying to make her night even worse and she could barely bow to the man. Did she really look that rough?

The badge brought a bit of comfort to her and she was sure the last train had already left. His offer seemed harmless enough. "Yes, I'd appreciate that, thank you," she said, glancing over the detective and shaking her head. "I don't think we've met before...I'm sorry, if we have, I don't remember it. But my head is sort of foggy right now so my conscious isn't...the greatest."

All it took was one proper executed grip for just enough time to have the nuisance of a man pass out, stopping all profanities that had fallen barely intelligible from that mouth, leaving only the small of booze behind. "You're not looking too good, Miss." Fujitaka pointed out casually with a smile once the body was discarded against the next wall. The tall man approached while still cleaning his hands off with a fabric tissue, head slightly tilted to get a better look at the young woman. "Would you like a ride home?" Knowing how that may sound inappropriate after what she had just experienced the older already reached into the pocket of his jacket to pull forth his badge. "I'm a detective, no need to worry." A bit more than just a detective, but the details weren't important when someone looked ready to pass out any moment. "Say, have we met before?"

"Do You Really Need More Than 5 Minutes To Establish A Date With Someone?" Kimi Asked, Rushed To Try

"Do you really need more than 5 minutes to establish a date with someone?" Kimi asked, rushed to try and get ready before she'd be late. She walked right over Jace's legs to grab her phone sitting on the table. "I barely have time to sleep, so having a date is almost impossible. I'm not wasting any time."

A Starter For @anexthetxc.

"So let me get this straight — you agreed to go on a date with this guy after like five minutes of talking to him? On a dating app?" He rolled his eyes, scrolling through his phone idly as his roommate continued to prepare for their date later that evening. "I don't trust him."

"--plenty Of Lighting, Do You Hear Yourself?" Kimi Scoffed, Partly Out Of Disbelief And A Little Out

"--plenty of lighting, do you hear yourself?" Kimi scoffed, partly out of disbelief and a little out of humor that Jace was getting so worked up over something common. "It's in a cafe. I'll make sure if he tries to kill me to pour hot coffee in his face. Then I'll attack him with a pastry."

She rolled her eyes even though she was smiling in amusement. She also patted the top of his head. "But, yes. If I need a hero to come and save me you know you're the first person I'll call. But please let me have this one date without getting concerned! I'll even text you every ten minutes if that would make you feel more comfortable."

"It Also Sounds Unsafe." Jace Tells Kimi, Watching Her As She Grabs Her Phone. "What If He Tries To Kill
"It Also Sounds Unsafe." Jace Tells Kimi, Watching Her As She Grabs Her Phone. "What If He Tries To Kill

"It also sounds unsafe." Jace tells Kimi, watching her as she grabs her phone. "What if he tries to kill you? Or worse, what if he's really boring?" He chuckled to himself. "Wait- I have an idea." Jace grabbed his own phone and pulled up Kimi's number on speed dial. "If something goes wrong, call me. Or text me. Like, if you want to bail on the date early, just text me and I'll come up with an emergency call." Jace smiled softly at that prospective situation, no doubt putting his creativity to use. But regardless, he still feared for his friend going out with a complete stranger. "Where are you going out? Is there plenty of lighting there, people around?" His Type-A personality was really shining right now.

"For You, It's Probably The Perfect Amount. Excessive To Anyone Else Normal." Kimi Grabbed The Last Of

"For you, it's probably the perfect amount. Excessive to anyone else normal." Kimi grabbed the last of her belongings and threw it in her purse. There wasn't much of a nice dress code for her date, opting for something a little too casual and not impressive. Like she'd said, it was last minute and a quick meet up.

"He's just as busy as I am with work. I actually think he's meeting me right after work and was the only time he had -- it seems like we have more in common than I thought." And if it didn't work out, at least she had done something interesting since the last month was only work. She didn't even have a decent paycheck to show it off. "Is there any other self defense advice you need to give me before I go?" she asked Jace.

"Okay, The Sarcasm Is Not Appreciated But It Did Make Me Feel Better, So I'll Let That Part Slide." He

"Okay, the sarcasm is not appreciated but it did make me feel better, so I'll let that part slide." He added, "Dangerous things have happened in less precarious situations. But you definitely have the right idea with the coffee throwing."

"I'll have you know I'm already thinking of emergency situations. I'll be perfecting them while you're gone." He cleared his throat in an attempt to maintain his serious composure. "But really. You don't have to text me every 10 minutes. I'll probably be playing Fortnite. But I will lose my game for your safety, you understand that right? Text me as much as you want, but you have to admit, every 10 minutes is a little excessive.
