How do you feel about the fact that a lot of people in the BOTW fandom have an actual crush on Revali and/or Teba?

*shrug* If anything, it’s a compliment. People connect with characters for various reasons - identifying with their emotions, appreciating their personality or character quirks, or even simply idolizing them as the kind of people they hope to someday be themselves. To me, having someone connect with a character means the writing team/actor/designers have succeeded in their goal to create someone you WANT to follow and learn more about.

If you specifically meant in a romantic sense… it still doesn’t bother me all that much. Life is too short to harass people over what fantasy characters they wanna have a crush on, especially if it’s just a personal taste that doesn’t ultimately affect anyone else around them. It’s only when fanaticism begins to impact real people in a negative context that I begin to get concerned.

Fully agreed. I love both Revali and Teba as characters, but their roles are scripted and only essential to the story and, sadly, they aren't able to escape their roles in the rest of BotW.

When I play the game I'm legit always happy to see Kass pop up! The sense of being alone in BotW is there big time, even when I encounter other NPCs and salespeople they just don't... I don't really feel anything.

Kass is different, though. He's a traveling bard that plays a role to help bolster you on your quest. He's adventurous, he's friendly, and he SHOWS these qualities rather than just saying "I'm the adventurous type" and nothing else happens. Plus, if you somehow want this, he is entirely optional to interact with (unless you play the Champion's Ballad but that's beside the point). So, whenever you see him, your emotions can range from indifferent to ecstatic instead of annoyed.

Part of me wishes there were more characters like this in games, but that might take away that warm happiness an NPC like Kass can give.

... I miss him...

You know, I've always found it weird how Kass is EVERYWHERE I go lately in my circles. Kass here, Kass there! People on my twitter timeline sharing Kass pics, People on my Discord sharing Kass art. Everyone always goes on about how he's so handsome and cool and everyone seems to forget that he has a wife and children, but why? It makes you wonder how he got so popular while Revali/Teba are often forgotten about in comparison. I know Revali is dead and all, but still. Is Kass simply Immortal?

Revali and Teba, while distinct in their individual personalities, are still effectively “moments in time” of the adventure regardless; that means they are met, experienced, assisted, and then moved on from in order to seek what else exists in the land.

To my knowledge, Kass is not limited by this - he is an active role in the player’s entire adventure, offering knowledge and input on ALL of the Champions (and even the DLC challenges!) as Link continues to grow and explore. The player comes to expect - even anticipate - future meetings with Kass, which creates a sense of need and attachment.

With this in mind, it doesn’t surprise me at all that the Rito who we spend the most *active* time with also ended up becoming the most loved.

Dear Revali,

I killed a stone talus today.

Yours,

Link

--

Little Knight,

I killed an ice talus, but I don't see why we must have this conversation.

Sincerely,

Revali

--

Champion-Master-Legend-whatever they're calling you these days,

Helped with the Lynel on Shatterback Point. I’ll leave Zora’s Domain and start heading west soon. Mipha says you ignored her letter.

- Link

--

Knight That Already Sealed The Darkness And Is Now Obsolete,

Mipha sent me three book reviews and five recipes. I’ll get to it all eventually.

Don't the monsters over there have shock arrows? She should focus on healing you instead of waiting for my reply.

- Revali

--

Dear Revali,

Yeah but it only hit me twice so I was fine. Mipha scolded me though.

I arrived in Goron City yesterday. Ate too much curry and killed a fire talus. Daruk says hi.

- Link

--

Link,

Fire is easy. Try catching enough fish to feed the whole village.

Hi, Daruk!

- Revali

--

A camp of ten moblins.

- Link

--

Twenty ice lizalfos. And that was after a full day of teaching.

--

How is everyone in the village? Say hi to Teba for me.

- Molduga

--

Teba wants you to return the forty arrows you stole from the range. I must say, I wouldn't expect a knight such as yourself to struggle with something as basic as making arrows. Even Tulin has already mastered it. Your laziness knows no bounds.

I assume you saw Urbosa when you were in the desert. Is she healing?

- Red Lynel

--

Tell him sorry. I used them all.

She was doing okay when I left. Tired. Riju's been staying with her. She’s just glad that there's an adult around to guide her.

Lynels are tough. What bow did you use?

- Hinoxes (three!)

--

Nice try. I knew you had an endgame. I refuse to be your mediator, or to put up with thinly-veiled questions about my condition. You've managed to visit all the other Champions. Come to the Flight Range yourself if you have something to say to Teba.

Also, Tulin misses you.

- swallow bow, still.

--

And if I have something to say to you?

- tree branch

--

Then you should get over here and say it before that branch gives you too many splinters.

A Revali Fanfic Recommendation

I urge you all to put your life on hold for a moment and go read this brilliant fanfiction:

archiveofourown.org
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works

A hundred years after the fall of Hyrule to Calamity Ganon, and the hero Link has finally sealed the darkness and freed the Divine Beasts of their curse - and with it, their pilots are finally free. But not just as spirits. Awake once again, the four Champions of old have a second chance at life and must re-adjust to this future world with their decendants. Well - all except for one Champion, who doesn't have a decentant. Or even anyone left alive that knew him. Teba is happy to take in his revived ancient idol as one of his own, but sharing a living space with a hundred year old Champion with an ego the size of his divine beast and who might have some issues he's not willing to share can be a lot sometimes and they don't always see eye to eye. Revali thinks he should return to leading the new generation of Rito warriors. Teba thinks this actual child should never have been leading warriors or fighting a war in the first place. Tulin is just excited to have the infamous Rito Champion in his house.

Beautifully written and lovingly crafted, this baby can fit so much trauma and whump into the most gut-wrenching and heat-breakingly found family story you may ever read. 130,000 words, 36 chapters (and still regularly updating!), and a CRIMINALLY low number of kudos. If that doesn't sway you, here is some gushing under the cut <3

You think you've read a champions revival fic before? This will have you saying "how the FUCK have I not seen this before" and completely change the way you view everything (mild exaggeration. m i l d). We have all of your favourite revali tropes: being a dick and getting owned, being a dick and being right, getting own and never showing those feelings to the light of day, getting killed, getting unkilled and loved, showing emotions but being super weird and revali about it, bonding with tulin!!, bonding with teba and the rest of rito village, bonding with the champions, having panic attacks and trauma, vah medoh being the best ever, being a terrifying force of nature, being an idiot kid, and so much more!

Do you like grumpy dad teba? Do you like revali swallowing his pride? Do you like revali immediately spitting his pride back up and being a bitchy bird? Do you like mipha and revali as gossip buddies? Do you like the complete and utter fool revali makes of himself everytime he so much as hears the name link? Do you like people seeing right through his facade and calling him out on it?

AND NOT TO MENTION THE WORLD BUILDING??? this fic is so in depth of the political climates, racism, lore, changes in culture during times of war, colonisation, biology of the races and just fucking everything?? It adds so much life to the world of hyrule I am genuinely shocked at how much this person clearly loves these games (botw/totk/aoc) and they are able to incorporate all of this amazing information in a way that flows so naturally and just hhrnngngg I am fucking insane about it. THE SCIENCE, oh my god how did I forget all the wonderous thoughts surrounding the divine beasts and the sheikah tech, oh god and how they write the magic system? Guys I swear it's so good.

Characterisation is on point, everyone feels so full of life and that they are reacting exactly how you would expect them too, and they just seem so real, like they are right beside you as you're reading. The author does an IMMACULATE job of drawing you in and making you feel a part of the story, all the while being just beautifully written?

Don't get me started on the attention to rito culture. I have never seen someone pour so much love into something before, genuinely on of the greatest things I've seen. I've always had a fascination over how the races of hyrule view each other, similarities and differences, how their cultures and histories intertwine, and conflicts that may arise. But oh. my. god. My jaw was on the floor every time, it's so rich and beautiful but not without the horrors (and oh god, they are Horrors tm) and again it's just so real!!!

Be warned, however, that there is gore and viscera and terror and hurt and war crimes and death (duh), but for each terrible thing to happen it is repaid tenfold in love and kindness somewhere down the line. (Unless you are into hurt no comfort, then sorry buddy!) It is a beautiful narrative and the exploration of trauma and self is mind boggling and just go read it!!! 😭 😭 😭 I just love this fic so much, it has instantly sky-rocketed to one of my top 3 favourite fics I've ever read, and I'm so grateful to have found it and now be along for the ride that if I could bring that to one more person then by god I will fucking do it

Continued headcanon submissions (should I have just put it all in one post? That wall of text would have been enormous.)

Revali's version of rest and relaxation is flying out and wandering until he finds something that interests him. He's definitely been a boon in discovering new food sources for the Rito and detailing maps further than ever before, but it's also a good thing he's as fast as he is considering how far he wanders. He got all the way down to Faron once before thinking "shit I should probably turn around". He'll show up random local archery contests, try different foods just to declare that it's not as good as the stuff in Rito Village (he might not give such high praise if he was at home, lol), and occasionally he'll bring back presents for the little Rito (he's not heartless).

Basically if he had a car he would totally go on long night drives and take frequent road trips on a whim.

THIS IS SO CUTE AND WHOLESOME HELP. 🥺

He just likes to fly about and explore. Casual cartography hobby like what an absolute secret nerd. I'm obsessed with him just bringing back little gifts for people.

There's so many fics where Revali is an antisocial lone wolf type character even around the other Rito - but it's clear they worked together, and he's very proud of being a Rito and able to compliment his own people. I like to think maybe even if he was standoffish around the other Champions, maybe he was actually really kinda loved in his community at home. A little up his own butt, sure, but he had friends. People liked him. He knew everyone's names, would randomly drop into people's huts to toss them some berries you can only get in a different region just because he knows they like them and he was down that way on a flight. Would pick up pretty seashells and interesting trinkets on his travels to give to the fledglings in the village. Would specifically head out to areas to pick up items people needed for cooking or sewing just because why not be useful?

He doesn't make a big deal about it. He's off doing his own thing but the other Rito are always in the back of his mind and secretly he enjoys helping people. It makes him feel good to give people gifts from his adventures.

He loves his people and they love him - even if he can be kind of an obnoxious twat sometimes. He's good inside. He'a grown up there, they know him even behind the mask of grandure he puts on.

Do you think, when he died, Rito brought little trinkets from their own adventures to leave at his grave? A tribute not to the great master Revali - but to their friend, who would sometimes disappear for days at a time and return and silently hand them a tropical fruit or an interesting book just to let them know he thought of them.

And they're still thinking of him - and want him to know that, wherever he is now.

Revali: What is this!?

Zelda: That’s the weight of guilt. Give in to the nice side. Help those unfortunate, and make the guilt go away, my friend.

Revali: Ow! Make it stop!

Zelda: Surrender to your kindness, Revali. It’s nice to be nice.

Revali: Your guilt is strong, my friend. But it is no match for the power of my selfishness!
