Day 42 of posting cute creatures we found on our field trip:
Isopods of the genus Armadillidium are found all over the world. They are very resistant to drought, unlike most other isopods, which allows them to thrive in various habitats. The genus name Armadillidium means “little armadillo” which is adorable. They are often called rolly pollies because they can curl up into a ball as a defense mechanism. Isopods are the only type of crustacean that spend the entirety of their life cycle on land.

I mean, rolly pollies (also known as pill bugs or potato bugs).
They evolved to be on land, but they cannot take in pure air. It dries them out and they will die. They need the water to breathe. Like a fish. So wet soil is great.
