I found the source! And it’s actually pretty interesting in full context!
Directed by a man named Václav Mergl, The Crabs (original title: Krabi) is apparently a 1976 short film allegory about the spiral-to-self-destruction risk of advancing weaponry.
The crabs are actually self-replicating machines created by the scientist, programmed to seek out metal, devour it, and then use it to construct more complicated and aggressive versions of themselves. This becomes a representation of both the nature of the arms race (extremely relevant to the time period when this was released) and species’ evolution by survival of the fittest.
I would highly recommend checking it out, the entire short is only about 11 minutes long and pretty charming :)
I love how it’s both massively implied and basically shown on screen that a great deal of Zim’s free time on Earth is spent doing stuff to innocent animals/humans in the lower levels of his base that would probably be well suited to that happy meat farms type of background music

There’s something aboard the ship. The crew refuses to comment on it, paid to act like everything is smooth sailing despite the obvious, but you’ve heard it. In the dead of night, when the partying comes to an end and your fellow guests retire to their rooms, screams echo from deep within the bowels of the Ishimura.
It’s only a matter of time before it comes for you. Even now you can hear it breathing, whispering, groaning. Laying awake on your bed, you stare into the overhead vent. It’s there you always find them - floating eyes amidst the endless dark.

Weightless.
When you awake, you’re weightless. Free, light, unburdened – it’s as if you’re floating in space. A sense of serenity befalls you. Taking a deep breath, you suck down the artificial air and hold it deep within your lungs.
There’s something off about the crew. They haven’t been acting right ever since the outing on Feros. You exhale through parted lips. Desperate whispers shared in dark corners, mouths sealed shut behind trembling lips, eyes wide with the unspeakable knowledge, the horrendous truth of what happened that “uneventful” day.
Another inhalation of not-quite-perfect oxygen. It’s almost indistinguishable from Earth’s air and yet… you know. Perhaps that’s the only reason it bothers you. You know it isn’t natural. It sits heavy in your chest. If only you had caught a glimpse of the passenger they carted down to medical. Without something concrete, you have nothing to investigate. An insistent burn tickles your lungs. Asking everyone you see if they know of a missing guest is proving futile. Just as your chest is ready to burst, you release your breath.
Enough is enough.
Today is the day you get your answers.

Plus the shrapnel that the planet would cause. Other planets in the solar system would have to deal with meteor showers of that planet for YEARS. Most of which would be boiling rock from the planet's core. And if those other planets within the solar system are also inhabited, they would face major extinction events. Then Imagine living on one of those neighboring planets when the blown up planet was your home or something!!! You'd be watching your friends, family and community being killed by the very ground you grew up on.

My bf was watching Annihilation last night and made the mistake of asking me story details about The Southern Reach Trilogy books like "so what happens to this character?" And "Why did X happen?" And I went on a long ND rant explaining all of the wild intricacies of the plot and theme dynamics and... we had a very late night to say the least.
I will never stop gushing about this book series. If you love weird fiction, environmentalism, and subtle horror, I high recommend the series 10/10.
