Yeeesssssssss a scug based on a bioluminescent fungi is so cool :D

If you still need name ideas, you should call them Luci, (like Lucy) after luciferase and luciferin, two main components in the reaction that causes fungal bioluminescence!!! (And like, all other bioluminescence too lol)

All bioluminescent fungi glow green, but they aren’t all brown when they’re not glowing- many are white, some are orange or yellow, there’s lots of other colours they can be if you don’t want your scuggy to be brown! One’s even purple!

i wanted to think of them like a glowy mushroom! thankfully, there is one that is bright green when glowing!

i like to think of them like the bitter oyster mushrooms!! yeah this means if the area is bright they are probably. brown [ that's okay they can blend into the wall ]

i need name ideas for them!! they're the original 4th arena slugcat

(Ooo that is a cool scug. I have an idea >:3 What if a bunch of us made mushroom/fungi based scugs and they all lived together in a colony? I think that would be neat. we could put them all together in a hashtag or something)

(Also inspired by the mushroom scug ocs of @confituredekaki and @saffronstoats!)

I obviously love their idea, because it’s mushroom related, so it’s mushroom scug time everybody!!!!! Make a slugcat inspired by a mushroom or other fungi, and tag your art #scugshroom colony! :D

When designing your mushroom-inspired Slugcat, don’t just look at the colour of your mushroom, also consider things like size and shape:

Weird quirks: (like this bolete mushroom that bruises blue!)

Families and relationships: (like the deadly duo, two closely related and very dangerous amanita mushrooms!)

And other advantageous traits: (like bioluminescence or toxins!)

Don’t forget to have fun with it! It doesn’t have to be perfectly scientifically accurate, be creative! If you do the angel wings mushroom, you can give your scug wings! Pick a mushroom that’s used for dying fabric? They can be a textile worker! The possibilities are endless!

A scugshroom creation guide in case anyone has no idea what they’re doing!

Pick your mushroom! For my example, I’m going to use the turkey tail fungus.

Find reference photos! (I’d use multiple, as the fruiting bodies of one species will often look a bit different from each other.)

Find facts about your mushroom, and use those to determine some traits for your scugshroom!

-For example, the turkey tail fungi is often used for medicinal purposes! Because of that, my scugshroom will be a healer.

-Since I chose a polypore/shelf fungus (it has no stem and no cap), finding out the body type of my scugshroom was a little harder. But, looking at the scientific name of the turkey tail- Trametes versicolor, I found my answer!  Trametes versicolor literally translates to “one who is thin” and “varying in colour”. So they’ll be thin! However, I also want them to look strong, because the turkey tail cannot be eaten raw due to how tough it is- you can’t chew it. 

-Turkey tails are also covered in hairs, described as having a velvety or silky texture, so I’ll give my scugshroom fur!

4. Draw your scugshroom!

Here’s my first (I will probably do lots lol) scugshroom, inspired by the turkey tail fungus! Their role in the colony is a healer :)

It’s a little rushed lol, but I had fun! I hope this can help anyone who’s confused/lost! :D

My best attempt at making a scushroom

They are a mycena lux-coeli

I think they'd be used as like a sort of living lamp for dark nights or expeditions

They have a little lantern thing on their head cause in japenese they're called "Castanopsis tree’s lantern mushroom"

They have chinquapins on their tails cause they grow on chinquapin trees during rainy seasons

They need to be around water most of the time or else they will dehydrate

I love them!!! They’re so cute!!! I love the details like the chinquapins on their tail and the little lantern! It’s super cool!

They're super silly and tend to hunt on expeditions, I dunno what else to put because my little doodle explains it (but I'll transcript anyways because I have bad handwriting: Lizard tamer (smells nice) Poison!)

scugshroom, based on the common puffball mushroom! the eye scar is due to a few alternate names such as "no-eyes" due to beliefs that their spores cause blindness.

i also based them off the sea bunny!

while the younger white puffballs are not poisonous, the older yellow/brown ones are. I decided to make them a poisonous one to match the sea bunny

due to them being the poisonous version, the puffball [ they get a silly name due to their mushroom's name :3 ] is a trapper for the mushroom scug colony!

Three little guys based of the Armilliarias (Honey Fungi)

Theyre rarely seen alone like their real counterparts and each one has their own little role in the group

One is more bioluminescent than the rest, one is just poisonous (idk what theyre called but ive been told when looking theres a ton of fakers) and one is sorta parasitic?

I tried splitting and keeping the properties as best as i could, hope you like them :3

The way you used their tendency to fruit in large colonies and made multiple is already cool, but splitting up the properties is so smart- I wouldn’t have thought to do that but I wish I had because it’s awesome!!!

You did so much work for this oh my god I’m so impressed!! This is actually so cool I love these designs so much!!!! Even the stats and everything that’s amazing!!! The way you used the bleeding tooth mushroom’s bitter taste as a personality trait, the way pompom’s white fades into brown just like in the lion’s mane when they age!!! (I want him to hug me right now she looks so huggable ahhh!!!) (I am short circuiting sorry I’m just so excited with all the work you did lol)

(And I do get the strawberries and cream joke! I find it funny that the two most common names for this mushroom are “bleeding tooth” and “strawberries and cream”. Getting very different vibes there lol)

so...here's my part for scugshroom colony because i think it's a very fun designing challenge

THOSE are my small notes i made to simplify information i saw as important. fungi i chose are lion's mane(Hericium erinaceus) and blood tooth(Hydnellum peckii), they looked cool and i went okay. okay.

this is the Empath, or Pompom. (she/he/they/it) she's VERY big and VERY fluffy. she has a very sweet and caring personality, while holding strange fascination with cycle of death and rebirth and, weirdly enough, interest in the Rot, despite being as terrified of it as others. as his name suggests he's very empathetic and is usually first to help, he's that one responsible adult who helps kids who are afraid of doctors face their fears (haha not that im that kid...). (and yes i am implying that he frequently helps slugcats figure out when they need help and how to get it. trust me that sentence makes sense. actually, read this as 'he's basically like calypso from bluey', that's the vibe.)

she's also secretly a gourmenot child but no-one's supposed to know that /hj

this...is...strawberry and cream duo...(get it...bc strawberries and cream...)

slugcat is the Colorist, or Cream. (she/they/it) they are not yet past their puphood, so they're small (but they won't grow much because ummm i decided so). their natural appearance tends to scare some off, especially their small blood-looking spot on their lower jaw, which gives them a vampire look. she's very bitter and can come off as snappy, but it's mostly because she's been rather lonely most of her life! she found a companion in Strawberry, or the Courageous One. (he/it) Colorist is the one who patched up his wound from another lizard, and the one who made his cape as a sign of friendship. they formed a rather symbiotic relationship in which they, both seen as weaklings or outcasts in their homeland, help each other be stronger.

they're basically double trouble lol

the Colorist has incredible interest in fabric and likes making useful and fashionable items like bags or simple scarfs. they usually tend to isolate themself from others but it doesn't mean they don't see themself as a part of a collective, they're just used to not being well-liked. i can see Strawberry trying to make her interact with others more while she's just being all grumpy but still goes along with it haha.

this was a lot of fun i love thinking about how to convert facts into character traits soooooo yeah that was very fun :)

decided to make my contribution Chanterelle - The Actor chanterelles have wildly different fragrances and whatnot, so I chose to make them a really skilled actor who entertains the colony, I guess. They can also play dead and have a high chance of confusing lizards, but as the cycle goes on the lizards care less and less about whether or not it's already dead.

Since chanterelles make a great addition to food, they often like helping out with cooking, as a hobby. Their ability to hold their breath is slightly worse than average because of the whole 'real chanterelles do not have gills' method of identification

You didn’t specify what type of chanterelle, but I’d guess they’re based on the rainbow chanterelle due to the pinkish tint on their ears, hands and tail! I absolutely love the way you used them not having gills to mean them not being able to hold their breath- that’s so smart!!!

Pssst- fun fact! In French, « chanter » is the verb “to sing”, and « elle » is the “she” pronoun! To me, because I know French, the word chanterelle sounds (very very loosely and grammatically incorrectly) like “she sings”. (« Elle chante » would be the proper way to say that but still). So maybe The Actor likes musical theatre too! :D

chicken of the woods!

Since chicken of the woods is known for food, they are one of the main cooks in the colony. or a hunter if 'cook' doesn't suit the colony

They are very kind and gentle, and some scugs find their overly open nature a little annoying (some people can have mild reactions to chicken of the woods upon consumption)

I gave them layered fur, to mimic the shape of chicken of the woods and because the mushroom is able to be frozen for very long pieces of time and remain edible

Another way I worked in their edibility is that lizards and other creatures are a lot more aggressive when trying to to eat this slugcat

I also gave them a stumpy tail to make them look a little bit chicken-like

(Chicken of the woods is the best vegan/vegetarian chicken alternative and I will fight someone over that)

SECOND SLUGSHROOM LETS GO!!!

This time I did the blue chanterelle!

blue chanterelles are edible, but not considered choice. (Not liked as much as other mushrooms). They are more often used for dyeing fabric, and are known for their antitumour properties- they can help treat stomach cancer!!!

Their texture is either soft or brittle- they aren’t very strong, so my scugshroom isn’t either! Because blue chanterelles can have a coloration of black to blue, that made me think of the phrase “black and blue” in a reference to having bruises or being beaten up, so my poor little scugshroom has a black eye. They’re not the happiest scugshroom, since blue often means sadness.

They like to knit, (since blue chanterelles are often used to dye yarn) and sew, and they help out my turkey tail scugshroom with their medical work sometimes! and they’re probably about a teenager in age.

We need to get one of @t00nyah’s scugshrooms, Pompom the therapist to come and cheer them up lol

I HAVE A GALAXY BRAINED IDEA

Okay Okay so being a conjoined-twins style Slugcat people aren’t always very nice to the sisters, right? Okay so there’s this one mushroom, Psathyrella epimyces that’s a mycoparasite specializing in the mushroom that Bell is based off of, the shaggy mane/shaggy ink cap.

(For lack of a more recent photo this is what it does, it grows through and “deflates” the shaggy mane and then fruits from its cap:)

(A mycoparasite is an organism that is parasitic to fungi. I just realized you might not know what that word means lol sorry)

SO BASICALLY where I’m going with this is what if there was a Psathyrella epimyces scugshroom in the colony and they bullied Bell and Inky

for the scugshroom colony! my inky cap sisters, bell and inky.

bell is a shaggy ink cap mushroom, and there isnt much to say about her. if they are killed, whatever would be eating them only has a matter of time until they dissolve into an inky black puddle of bones. also, bell has incredibly long fur and it is almost completely unable to be tamed down. anyways, mushroom is pretty basic from what ive seen so i kinda have to give her her own personality outside of the mushroom.

she is very adventurous and tries to drag inky along with her to see new places and meet new creatures. she also runs head-first into conflict without thinking of a plan, much to her sisters dismay.

inky is im not sure what kind of inky cap, but her personality and such is based off a common inky cap. though, if she happened to be killed and consumed around the time the eater consumed a mushroom (like, the literal ones in game) it would cause many side affects and they would likely die.

she is the more.. tame one out of the sisters. she thinks before she acts, and in an attack situation, will always pay attention to her opponents strengths and weaknesses. she is also quiter, preferring to stay around the edges of the colony, though its hard to do that when bell is ecstatic to meet everyone. she takes the weird looks they get for being like 2 scugs in the same body very seriously, and gets a personal vendetta against anyone who does that.

despite how she seems, she can be kind and only wants to protect her and her sister. she believes that bells extrovert behavior and positive mindset will end up getting them hurt in the long run.

(also, yes ik i didnt color their legs correctly for the side view thingy)

Lactarius Deliciosus or Saffron Milkcup - my most favourite mushroom🧡

Beautiful, tasty, crunchy - this is what lizards think about when they see Saffron. No one knows exactly what kind of slugcat he is, but for some reason he attracts more predators than any other ones. Bad for him on one hand, but good for everyone else on the other. That’s why he is always ready to take the hit and lead the danger as far away from colony as possible. Even if it means he might need to be saved afterwards😅

He didn’t have any sort of special abilities or poisons like many other slugshrooms. So he can only rely on his strength and agility. And after years of training, he really became a good guard, although his work still sometimes leaves scars on his body

Saffron also loves to cook and even has his own secret recipes. With secret ingredient… Very special ingredient…

Yeah, he uses his milk sweat for cooking. It gives dishes a richer, sweet and spicy flavor and, as he believes, makes the dishes much tastier. But, for some reason, other slugcats didn't really appreciate his idea, and now he is not allowed to cook for everyone

However, Saffron continues to cook for himself and create new recipes. In a portable pot made from a snail shell, he always carries some of his signature soup, which he is ready to share with tired and lost travelers)))

upon doing research on the green pepe, I learned there’s some kind of fiber inspired by it that can convert biomechanical energy into electricity? and that it can act as a sensor to recognize digital coding and identify gestures? (the article I got this info from was a bit. hard to follow tbh. w/ the vocab and stuff whjsnjwsnjwsjn. very cool stuff tho)

I made another scugshroom, based off of a mushroom native to New Zealand (Where I'm from :D)

Anyway they got mauled by a lizard or something and that's how they got the scars.

Werewere kōkako mushrooms are a mystery when it comes to their blue pigment. Scientists are trying to find out how the mushrooms are so extremely blue but with little luck.

People also don't fully know if the mushrooms are toxic or not.

So this scugshroom is relatively withdrawn and mysterious.

As werewere kōkako mushrooms are being studied in hopes of making all-natural blue food colouring, this scug is considering helping out with cooking - mostly making the dishes look nice.

Werewere kōkako mushrooms also don't really have any uses at the moment, so the scug hasn't contributed much yet.
