Social Problems - Tumblr Posts

I struggle with how black and white thinking seems really pervasive in a lot of society now. I suspect social media hasn’t helped.

But for instance, if I say, “I like your fav most of the time, but this time, they did a thing I did not like. I hope they do better next time because this thing was not so nice,” this is not a personal attack. I am not attacking the person you view as your avatar, your friend, your muse. I am saying they are good but flawed. That’s probably nicer than what I say about myself which is simply, “I am flawed.” (My therapist and I are working on it lol).

It makes important conversations hard to have. “This person did a bad thing but they are overall good” is not a sentiment I see terribly often. But I think it’s true of most people we deem “good.” Intentionally or unintentionally, everyone will do a “bad thing.” Or, at least, a not so great thing.

I see this a lot when it comes to people consuming fictional media. “This character didn’t actually do a bad thing because I see them as good so their bad thing must be justified.” No. That character did a bad thing. You can still like them. But it’s okay to admit they have problems. And it’s not a personal attack on you if someone doesn’t like them. Or, at least, it doesn’t have to be.

Patience is an underrated virtue because at some point, we will all need someone to show that to us

Yes correct! Add in a fourth as a criminal mastermind that is never allowed out cause normal people think my knowledge on the subject is disturbing. My three mental illnesses are a hyperactive super excited kid who just wants to do the things they like, one who is almost always asleep but when they are awake they complain about life, and lastly a little hermit who just want to collect miscellaneous objects and dance in the rain.

In a clarion call that will likely rival his insta-legendary "everything's amazing and nobody's happy" diatribe delivered nearly five years ago on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, comedian Louis C.K. explains -- to Conan, once again -- exactly why he dislikes the culture of smartphones and why he would never get one for his kids.

When you have the "avoid getting raped" conversation with your daughter, it is difficult, as you don't want to imagine her as a victim. The idea of having the "don't rape" conversation with your son is more difficult as you don't ever want to imagine him as a perpetrator. Do it anyway.

An interesting perspective on educating children about the definition of rape and how it should be taught. I don't think I completely agree with everything, but I do think society takes a very one-sided and stigmatized approach to dealing with the root causes of rape and objectification, in BOTH genders.

We’ve been taught a woman’s body will cause men to sin. We’re told that if a woman shows too much of her body men will do stupid things. Let’s be clear: A woman’s body is not dangerous to you. Her body will not cause you harm. It will not make you do stupid things. If you do stupid things, it is because you chose to do stupid things.

So we grew up believing that no one would ever fall in love with us, that we'd be lonely forever, that we'd never meet someone to make us feel like the sun was something they built for us in their ...
