You should get out more, Bucky. Meet people and make friends, Bucky. You need to get laid, Bucky.
Samâs words echoed through Buckyâs head as he pushed open the door of the restaurant. The warm air welcomed him and the little bell at the entrance rattled when he entered. He didnât know how it exactly happened, but all of a sudden Clint had pitched into the conversation and urged him to meet his cousin. And Bucky had agreed. Well, the desperate attempt to make them shut up backfired. Big time.
He didnât want to date. Apart from the fact that he didnât wish himself on anybody, he didnât think he could handle a relationship like that. Hell, Bucky barely realized how he made friends in the past year, so how the hell was he supposed to date? He hadn't done it in ages. It was probably different now than it was 80 years ago.Â
The waiter looked at him with wide eyes - fear visible on his face - when he entered and chose a quiet place in the corner, though the whole restaurant was fairly empty. What would he even talk about? His hand started to sweat. This had been a bad idea. A really stupid bad idea. His eyes swerved to the door and then back to the waiter standing behind a small bar. Was it too late to back out?Â
But then the bell above the entrance chimed again and he knew that he had missed his chance.Â
âHello.â You smiled at him, clutching your bag with nervous fingers. âAre you James Barnes?â
Bucky scrambled to stand up and held out his hand to you with a tight smile. He nodded and gestured for you to take a seat after you told him your name.Â
He could do this, he thought. Especially because you seemed just as nervous. The first thing you two had in common, right?
âIâm really sorry, this is kind of awkward.â You looked down at your hands beneath the table with hesitance. âI... uhm... I havenât done this in a while,â you confessed with genuine eyes. And Bucky could see a hint of comfort washing through your face.Â
âI doubt your last date is as long ago as mine, doll. Youâll probably do a lot better than me.â
A small laugh pressed past your lips and Buckyâs heart warmed at the sound. It felt good to make you laugh. He wanted to do it again.
âLetâs rush through the basics then so we can get to the interesting bits. I think that first half hour is what makes these things so awkward.â Your mouth spread into a grin as you straightened up.
âSounds like a plan.â Bucky nodded.Â
âWell, you already know my name... I work in a small bookshop in Brooklyn, I am an only child but never wanted to be. I love dogs, cats, ducks - all the animals, really, but I donât have any pets because my landlord doesnât allow them. Well... I have fish - I had to settle for fish because they're quiet. But thatâs their problem, you know? Theyâre quiet and you canât play with them or pet them.â You shrugged. âUhm... I like to read - I do that a lot, and I think thatâs it.â Your speech ended with a bright smile and Bucky couldnât help his own from spreading.Â
âMy turn?â
âYes.â
âOkay...â He straightened ups as well, a little giddy about the situation now. Normally, Bucky wouldnât react this way to something he didn't like, but he wanted to try it this time. You were just so sweet and he didn't want to ruin the date... for you. âMy friends call me Bucky, I grew up in Brooklyn, I have a sister... had a sister. And I think Iâm more of a cat person - if I had to choose. I donât have any pets. I work a lot, I guess it keeps me distracted. And... I feel like my back story doesnât need to be explained, you probably know all about it.â He didnât give you much, Bucky knew that. But those were the things he could say easily and really, he wasnât sure how youâd react to most of it.
âBucky... I like it. Whatâs it short for?â
âBuchanan. âs my middle name.â
âLike the President?â
âYup.â
âHm... I guess thatâs kinda cool.â
âI guess.â
"Can I call you Bucky?"
He felt weirdly content with you saying his name. "If you want." There was no regret in his decision as he watched your face scrunch in excitement.
The shallow topics went on for a while, and Bucky was surprised to see that talking to you was easy. He didnât worry about what you thought, because you reacted to his replies with intrigue and adoration. He felt heard. And he had to admit that he actually enjoyed the little meeting his teammate had set up so far. He learned a bunch of stuff about you. And he picked up on little quirks you had and he celebrated every new one he noticed. Like the way your nose slightly crunched when you didn't believe him, or how your finger grazed over the table when you talked about something you really liked - back and forth. It was comforting to be in your presence.
Bucky leaned back in his booth as he emptied his beer, watching as you ordered another drink for yourself. He found himself smiling into the bottle when the waiter agreed to add an extra peppermint leave, making you bite back a bright smile. The waiter smiled as well, a lot less tense than he had been before you had arrived and it fascinated Bucky how contagious your good mood was. Then you turned your attention back to Bucky and he had to regain his composure. His arm slipped from the back of the booth and fell to his side as he waited for you to talk again.Â
âOkay, real talk, now - and I need you to answer this question honestly.â Your fingers pressed on the table like heâd seen important politicians do and Bucky had to hide a smile.Â
âHit me with it.â
âIf you could be a mix of any two animals, which combination would you choose?â
Bucky was baffled for a second. He had expected everything but this. And then - out of the blue - he laughed. A real canât-hold-back-the-snort-if-I-tried-laugh and it felt so unbelievably good, it scared him a bit.
You gasped appalled, but the small smirk behind your hand couldnât be hidden. âThis is serious, Bucky. It says a lot about you.â
âReally, how?â
âWell, for example, I would choose an elephumblebee because it would look freaking adorable. A tiny elephant with wings and a furry butt, are you kidding me? Why the government hasnât made that happen yet is truly beyond me.â
Bucky got it, then. It really did say a lot about you. You were fun and cute and he could imagine a little clumsy at times - just like he would imagine an elephumblebee. And even though it still felt foreign to him to engage in a silly activity like this, with you, it was fun - and he wanted to. So he thought really hard, his eyes focusing on the wall behind you and you waited patiently and ordered another beer for him.Â
Who would have thought that James Bucky Barnes would ever sit in a restaurant and think about how ridiculous a dog with a giraffeâs head would look? Certainly not Bucky. But it was almost comforting to do so.
âAlright, I think I got it.â You just nodded in anticipation. âI think I would be a spider-wolf... a spi- a spolf.â Bucky was satisfied with his answer: A lone wolf and someone people didnât really like - pretty accurate if youâd asked him.Â
You just watched him with a tilted head for a while and Bucky felt a little uncomfortable with his answer now. Had he said the wrong thing?Â
âWhat?â Your lips just pursed in response.Â
âNothing, nothing..,â you trailed off and Bucky couldnât stop staring at your lips. âI was just thinking, you know - I think Iâve never seen a real wolf before. Itâs not on my bucket list or anything and I heard they are so much bigger than you think, but like... have you?â
âI actually have. In the wild - amazing animals and yeah, bigger than a dog, thatâs for sure.â
âReally?â Your eyes lit up. âWow, that must have been such a unique experience.â
Bucky smiled sadly, nodding. âTo be honest, I didnât really realize it when it happened. I couldnât appreciate it the way you would.â
âOh well, still. Itâs awesome. The most extraordinary animal I have ever seen in âthe wildâ was a raccoon. Thereâs not a lot of wildlife potential when you never leave the city.â You shrugged as you pressed your lips in a straight line, but Bucky chuckled.
âNot much of the vacation kind?â
âItâs not that...â You paused and sighed. âI just love the bookstore too much. There is this one lady. She comes in every Thursday at exactly the same time and she just sits and reads and she has the most amazing stories to tell. And then there is the little stray cat that comes by every day and we have a little cuddle session. Oh, and I canât forget about the quiet tatted college kid that secretly reads romance novels in the back isles for hours on end. I would miss them too much...â
Bucky just sat and listened to you ramble on and on about all the individuals you were so attached to, even if they didnât know. And he was reminded yet again how much he enjoyed this initially dreaded evening. It didn't feel forced and you were so authentic and kind. Bucky was relaxing with every second he spend in the cozy little restaurant with you. He was sure that he could spend a whole day here with you, without getting bored.
He leaned forward as he watched the corners of your mouth tug up and your eyes sparkle with joy while you talked about the bookstore. And he couldnât help but ask himself how he ended up here. How had he gotten a date with the most caring person in the world - no, really, what were the odds of that happening to him? But the most present thought swarming his mind was:Â How is a woman like you still single?Â
You suddenly stopped taking and Bucky was catapulted back to reality. You looked at him with wide eyes for the fraction of a second and then they softened and your gaze averted to the table. Had he just said that out loud?! Bucky didnât know what to do. He was frozen to the booth, his hands tightening around the bottle and he held his breath - didnât dare breathe until you gave him a new reaction.
After a beat, you sighed and looked him in the eyes apologetically. âI... I donât know.â Your hand moved over the table and nervously began picking on the toothpicks in the glass jar. âI guess, I donât seem to be the taste of most men around here. I donât like wild parties and spending my weekends wasting away with a hangover.â
Bucky felt himself cringing at how uncomfortable he had made you. You clearly were embarrassed talking about this, but he would let you talk - or chose not to anymore. Either way, he would respect your decision.
âI... uh... I just havenât had any luck so far. When I talk about my interests, everyoneâs eyes just glaze over and then I never see them again. They think Iâm boring, but thatâs... I like concerts and dancing... I just donât need the whole-â Your hands flailed in front of your face before you sunk back into your seat.Â
âYouâre not boring, doll. I completely understand what youâre saying. I donât need all that-â now his hand flailed in the air, âeither.â Which made you break a smile that got brighter when he returned it. And Bucky felt a little pride swell in his chest when he watched your mood lift again.Â
âCan I ask you something?â You suddenly said and Bucky felt a little nervous at the piercing stare you gave him.
âUh... sure.â
You bit your lip before finally speaking again. âYou donât really strike me as the social type, either.â
Bucky waited for you to continue, but you seemed in thought all of a sudden. âThatâs not a question.â
You laughed nervously. âRight. I guess my question is... well, why did you agree to this evening? Clint didnât really make it seem as if there was a lot of convincing involved.â
Bucky already facepalmed himself mentally for what he was about to say next. But he didnât want to lie to you - it didnât feel right. No, you deserved the truth - especially after you had answered his stupid question earlier so honestly.
âTo be completely honest, I didnât know how else to make my friends- uh...shut up. But I donât regret coming here if thatâs what youâre getting at.â He rushed that last part when he saw your face sadden. âI donât get out too often, thatâs true. Which doesnât mean that I donât want to... I just donât know how to do this very well - talking to people. Usually, I get weird stares or fearful glances.â
Your eyes gleamed with something unintelligible before you leaned forward, your elbows resting on the table. âI donât know how anyone could be scared of you, Bucky.â
âThatâs very sweet of you to say, doll. But I donât blame them, I would probably react the same if I werenât... me.â His eyebrows furrowed with the last word and he could see a shiver of sadness wash over you.
âI think youâre pretty great,â you offered with an encouraging tap on his hand and Bucky felt his stomach churn.
A short silence overtook you and Bucky tried to keep his composure. The mood had shifted slightly, not uncomfortably, no - but just enough to leave his mind free from any topics he could talk about. Which usually wasnât a problem, but he wanted to talk to you - tell you more and get told more. Which was why he was extra grateful for your breaking the silence after a couple seconds.
âSo... I guess we can check off the heavy stuff as well?â
âSeems so,â he chuckled, holding on to the little feeling of relief you had sparked in his chest.
For the next hour, you actually got Bucky to open up a little more. He hadnât even realized you were the one talking most of the time because he enjoyed listening to you so much. He came to realize, however, that it wasnât so bad to talk about himself. He liked the way your eyes lit up at his stories about Clint, or the occasional âwhat, really?â you threw into his anecdotes, making him feel important.
After another 30 minutes, you had made it outside. And as Bucky stood outside the restaurant door, hands buried deep in his coat pockets, helooked at you with an honest smile, while you adjusted your mittens.
âThank you for giving this a chance, Bucky. I had a lot of fun tonight.â Your words built puffy white clouds in the air, but other than those, the butterflies in his stomach didnât dissipate.
âI did, too,â he confessed, realizing for the fourth time today, that this was really true. âWe should do this again.â
You bit your lips as your shoulders jerked with reluctance, but before you turned fully, you stepped towards Bucky and hugged him tightly. âDefinitely.âÂ
The cold weather seemed a lot more bearable all of a sudden. Bucky caged you to his chest with his arms and pressed his smile into the crook of your neck while an excited shiver ran through him. He felt incredible, safe, content, and he realized how much he had missed hugs - real, affectionate hugs.
âAnd youâre not a spolf,â you mumbled into his ear, squeezing him a little tighter. âYouâre a curtle - a cat-turtle. Because you have a hard shell and you donât trust very easily, which might make people feel like you donât care. But you do - youâre just a little misunderstood.â You pulled back with a sad smile and Bucky felt his hands tighten around you as he stiffened. Though despite the surprise, his lips split into a bright smile.
He gazed into your eyes for a little longer before he leaned forward and placed a chaste kiss on your cheek, making a giddy smile appear on your lips. âThank you, doll.âÂ
And then, with a final wave âgood nightâ you turned and walked down the street. Bucky watched until you rounded the corner, unable to wipe the stupid grin off his face.
**Bonus:
âSo... how was the date?â Sam teased as Bucky entered the main area of the compound. But his friend just wanted to go to his room and revel in the serenity, you had brought him, a little longer.
âThatâs none of your business, punk,â Bucky grumbled, passing the sofa.Â
âWhy, did you more-than-kiss her goodbye?â
Bucky stopped in his tracks and turned with an annoyed expression, but not even he could hide the blush on his cheeks from deepening at the thought of actually kissing you. His heart was pounding in his chest.
âOh! Wait? Did you really?!â
âShut up, Sam.â Bucky wanted to deny it for your sake, but he liked the thought of it too much. So he swiftly decided to simply not spill in front of his friends and your cousin.Â
âHoly shit.â He heard Clint chuckle while he made a beeline to his room, missing how the two avengers exchanged a $10 bill behind him.

You owned a beautiful bakery in the heart of New York, called âCupcake Cornerâ -it's risky being so close to the infamous avengers tower- but worth it, each time a smiling customer bit into a cake, pie, cookie, cupcake or muffin.Â
You looked down at the large order you finished writing
âJust to double check it all, you wanted 7 dozen cookies, 10 dozen cupcakes, 2 three-tier cakes, 2 apple pies, 3 cheesecakes, 2 blueberry pies and 3 tins of cinnamon rolls. Yes?â
âCorrect, all delivered to avengers tower on August 5th, at 8pm sharp. I will send half the money now, and you will receive the rest day of deliveryâ Mr.Starks assistant, Stacey replied âalso you are welcome to stay for a few drinks, courteous of Mr.Starkâ
âOh my, thank you! I will have that all ready for you! Thank you very muchâ Smiling happily as you continued to prep for the day. Humming as you hung up and turned to your assistant Jack âholy shit! The avengers want our baked goods for a party Jack! Can you believe it! AND we get to go to an Avengers party!â
âThat is great boss! Itâll be great for business, how long do we have to prep it?â Jack asks as he pops some cookies and muffins in the oven. Smiling, you skip over to the counter, organising the day's treats. âWe have exactly a week to do it. Iâll do the cakes, Stark wants it decorated with iron man coloursâ You roll your eyes at Stark's famous ego.
âWell, let's get this day on with, hungry, paying customers are waiting outside jack!â You announce, happily moving towards the door as Jack finishes stocking the counter.

Walking into the bakery on August 5th you were filled with excitement and nerves. Shaking out those nerves you grabbed the pink and blue boxes with your logo, you packed up the cookies, and cupcakes, both decorated with iron man colours, and the avengers logo.Â
âHey Boss! Wonderful day huh?! Can't wait to see the avengers towerâ Jack happily sang as he entered the large kitchen, filled with any baker's dream equipment and ingredients.Â
âJack! Right on time, grab the cakes for me please?â You asked, peering over at him as you busied yourself with grabbing the fresh baked goods for Jack to serve.
âOkay.. lets load this into the car, then we can head over to the towerâ you say as you grab 3 of the boxes and walk out the door with Jack following close behind.
Placing the boxes in your little Volkswagen Beetle, you smile happily, close the door and turn to Jack âwell I better get going, donât wanna be late! Do I look alright?â You peer down at your outfit (fem masc) and look back up at Jack âyeah! You look great as always, boss. You better get going before youâre lateâÂ
You finally arrive at the tall, towering skyscraper topped with its iconic âA.âÂ
You enter into the lobby, carefully carrying the first two boxes, you step up to the secretary beside a tall brunette man, with wide muscular shoulders and biceps that bulge and stretch his short sleeve shirt, You minutely shake your head to clear the unprofessional thoughts from your head. The mystery manâs head turns to you as you walk up to the desk.
âHello, My name is Y/N. I am delivering the order from Cupcake Cornerâ You beamed as you placed the boxes down âI have more boxes I may need help bringing up maâamâÂ
The secretary smiles, nods and picks up her phone âMr.Stark, dessert is here. The owner will bring the boxes up, yes sirâÂ
As the secretary talks, the mysterious brunet smiles at you âI can help you bring the boxes up. I'm heading to the party as wellâ Turning, you look up and make eye contact, momentarily stunned as his sharp, blue eyes seem to peer into your soul. You will never admit that you don't want him to stop.
âOh! I would appreciate it sir! I can show you my car in just a secondâ You breathed, as you kept eye contact with the tall adonis of a man.
âBucky, please. Call me Bucky, doll. No need for fancy words like sirâ âBuckyâ smirks at you. Nodding quickly with a blush you turn back to the secretary who has a sweet, almost knowing smile on her face âYou can use the elevator to take the boxes up floor 50, Mr.Stark will be waiting for you there missâ
Nodding, you gesture for Bucky to follow you out to the car. âJust in hereâ You pop open the trunk, letting him grab out the two tall boxes that hold the perfectly designed cakes. âCareful! Don't drop themâ you gasp and want to reach out, being defensive of your designs.
Chuckling he smiles down at you âDont worry doll, I got it. Iâll be very careful, lead the wayâÂ
Sighing awkwardly, you close the trunk, pick back up your boxes and walk into the lobby, and to the elevator. âThank you, I appreciate it really. I hate carrying this many boxes up and down elevatorsâ You smile at him gratefullyÂ
âNot a problem, I like helping out when I canâ He assured âSo, are you staying for the party? You certainly look dressed for oneâ You aren't sure, but you swear his eyes look you up and down appreciatively.Â
âOh- uh yea! I am. Stark invited me to stay for a bit⌠so I dressed upâ chucking softly as you both step out of the elevator to see Tony Stark standing by a long table, with a few other people milling about the room, setting up other kinds of food, and snacks.
âAh! There you are, come in. You can set up hereâ Tony gestures to the empty table he is leaning on âAh- you brought a stray, hey terminatorâ Chuckling he pats Buckyâs left shoulder as he passes him towards the other side of the room
âThank you Mr.Stark!â you call out as you and Bucky set the first of the boxes down âokay.. There are only a few more boxes so you are welcome to go about your business. I can handle the rest Bucky, but thank you againâÂ
Chuckling bucky bumps your shoulder with his ânonsense, i'll help you bring the rest up. Lets goâ He nods and gestures towards the elevator.Â
While you both got the last few boxes up to the party room, you and Bucky made small talk, mainly he asked about your bakery. What you sell, where it is, how much you sell, opening times, etc.
âWell, I enjoyed this dollâ Bucky smiled at you, placing the boxes he held down on the table, âI gotta go get ready, but iâll see you at the party? Perhaps for a drink?â He probed, looking at you with hopeful eyes.
âYea.. it was nice to talk to you. I do hope to see you at the party Buckyâ Smiling up at him, you wave a quick goodbye as you watch him leave. Squealing internally at getting the attention of a handsome avenger like Bucky.
You quickly shake your head, reminding you that youâre working and need to remain professional while setting up, you turn to start unboxing and setting up your sweet treats.

After a few minutes Mr.Stark announces that party guests will begin to arrive soon, and that we are each welcome to stay, mingle, and drink.Â
Pulling out your phone you check your hair and outfit to make sure you look presentable. Doors opening and elevators dinging pull you out of your thoughts as well dressed, gorgeous people walk into the room.
Your breath hitches as you see Bucky Barnes walk in wearing a gorgeous all black suit that stretches and fits his muscles perfectly. You clear your throat as you see him walking towards you. âHey doll! This is Steve and Natasha. And this is Y/N the baker I told you aboutâ Smiling as he looks at you.
âOh my. Hello! It's so nice to meet you both, truely!â You cough slightly to focus your mind on the conversation, and not on the fact that the Bucky barnes talked about you to his avenger friends.Â
Natasha walks forward and gives you a gentle hug âHello, it's nice to meet you. Love the outfitâ winking she grabs one of your cookies and bites into it, humming sweetly at the taste âdelicious, might just have to steal dessert before dinner hmm?â You blush deeply at the praise, smiling at them, as both Steve and Bucky grab a cookie as well.
âDamn doll, this is amazing! Gonna have to come visit your bakeryâ Bucky smiles at you, lightly bumping his shoulder against yours.Â
âThey are right, itâs very goodâ Steve nodded as he bit into his cookie. âTony picked a great bakeryâ
Laughing sweetly, wanting to hide your blushing face. âThank you..â
Natasha and Steve get dragged away by some agent or other person. Leaving you and Bucky alone beside the table. âSo, how about that drink I promised you?â Bucky offers out his arm to guide you both towards the loaded bar.
âSuch a gentleman, I would love a drinkâ smiling happily, you link arms with the broad man. âIâll have a vodka tonicâ you tell the bartender
âAnd I will have a whiskyâ Buckyâs smooth deep voice distracts you. You look over at him, smiling and admire his side profile.Â
He turns to look at you âwhat? Do I have something on my face already?â He teases, running his hand across the light stubble that decorates his sharp jawline.
âNo, sorry⌠didn't mean to stareâ You say, awkwardly looking away from his face. Not meaning to make him uncomfortable.
âItâs alright, I mean only if I can admire you back, doll~â He reassures, moving forward just a bit, testing the waters to see how you respond. âOr perhaps a dance?â
You gape âa dance? With me, really?â looking up at him, seeing him already watching you âof course, I mean I would love to!â
Bucky smiles broadly âperfect, lets finish our drinks first. I already see those punks watching usâ Chuckling he looks over to see, Natasha, Steve, Sam, Clint, and Tony indiscreetly looking over at you and Bucky.Â
âOh my- they areâ you say, flustered âoh goshâ
Bucky chuckles gently, passing you your drink âdon't worry, we donât have to go over. But I assure you they are very niceâÂ
As you both grab your drinks, Bucky guides you two towards the group of avengers, settled on a set of couches. âYou punks gonna keep staring?â Bucky teases as he smacks Steve on the back of the head.
âWe weren't staring! Just amazed that the grumpy tin-man is actually smiling and talking to someone!â Sam teases as he holds his hand out to shake âIâm Sam Wilson by the wayâ
Bucky and you settle on the empty loveseat, talking and joking amongst the famous avengers. You anticipated feeling outcasted, left out, and awkward. But the group is very kind and welcoming, you still feel awkward and anxious, although that's normal everyday you.
You are pulled from your thoughts by Sam calling your name âyou wanna hear a fun story about tin-man there?â Smirking, you quickly nod, much to Buckyâs embarrassment and displeasure.
âThis grumpy old man once tried to bake. It did not turn out wellâ Sam laughs along with each of the other avengers, while Bucky groans loudly as he remembers that moment.
âIt was late, and he tried to bake a cake for everyone as a thank you. We entered the kitchen to burning cake, that was literally ON fire, and a panicking bucky running around the kitchenâÂ
You laugh loudly, turning to look at bucky seeing blush appear on his face.
âI think itâs time for that dance you promised me dollâ Bucky quickly stands up, offering out a hand for you to take. Smirking you take his hand âperhaps I just need to teach you to bake?â
As you both walk away, you hear the laugh of the avengers. âHa ha- hilarious! Real funny punksâ Bucky grumbles as he guides you towards the dance floor, filled with bodies moving and grinding to the beat of the song.Â
âSorry Bucky.. It was fairly funny thoughâ you assure him, turning to face him.
âItâs alright doll, Iâve accepted I'm not a baker. Trust me, I havenât tried since that incidentâÂ
The music suddenly changes to a slower love song, and when you look at the DJ you see Tony Stark standing beside the DJ and smirking at you and Bucky.
âI guess that's my cueâ Bucky grins at you, pulling you closer âShall we dance now doll?â

Thank you so much for reading! this is my first fic I've written and posted. Constructive criticism is welcome <3

The road lay before them like a tarmac ribbon. A white line ran down the center, relatively unbroken compared to the scarred and potholed concrete.
Bucky walked down this abandoned street keeping his hands deep in his bomber jacket's pockets.
The wind was howling like some horror movie opener, so Barnes squinted. "Fucking weather," he hummed deeply under his breath. His hair was whipping so violently about his face he could barely see at all.
It was when he noticed something with a corner of his eye.
Little girl wandered the street, she wasn't homeless for sure. Girl was dressed in a pink coat and hat with cat ears.
It looked like she was looking for something, the girl only shivered because of the wind and walked pass Bucky. She looked at him and smiled, stopping for a second. "Good evening, sir."
He didn't intend to answer, yet it wasn't a usual thing to see anyone around that abandoned street. The neighborhood wasn't too pleasant, especially for a little girl.
Barnes stopped also and looked at her above his shoulder. "Hi. What are ya doing here, girl?," he asked casually.
Girl was quiet for a moment. "I am looking for my mommy, sir," she explained, swinging on her feet and pulling her hat more on.
The man looked rather scary for her, so she took one little step back. Mom told her many times to not talk to strangers, but she also told her to be nice for other people.
He rubbed over his chin, his glance was still down on her. "You got lost?," Bucky threw a single question, turning fully to her. "It's not a safe place. Where are your parents? Where do you live?"
Girl nodded slowly. "Yes. I don't know where my mommy is. I thought I will find the way home but I didn't, sir."
She looked up and smiled at him. "You have a nice big blue eyes, sir!," girl giggled excitedly.
Bucky crouched in front of her, he tilted his head a bit. "Do you remember the address?," Barnes asked. "If yes, I can walk you up to the house," he offered slightly.
He was thinking for a longer second, only to ask another question. "What's your name, little one?"
The girl frowned softly, not too pleased with lack of answer from Bucky. "I don't, sir. All I know is that my home is somewhere near a really biiiig tower!," she jumped happily. "My name is Carolyn, sir. What's your?"
"I like your name," Bucky smiled, however he didn't intend to do so. "My name is James, James Barnes," he pulled his flesh hand out of his pocket and reached it to her.
Girl giggled. "Hello, James, James Barnes! You have a very funny name," she said, grabbing his hand. "But... I can't go with you," girl said quietly. "My feet hurts. Are you strong enough to carry me?"
Before he thought, Bucky let out a deep, loud laugh.
Oh, she was so cute.
Her hair was as waves of pure earth, softly reflecting the light of the sun; few of a long locks peeked from under her hat.
Bucky knew he had some things to do, but he couldn't refuse to help that kid.
He rubbed his chin, humming loudly as he pretended he was considering every concern, but finally he nodded. "I think I can give it a try."
Girl squeeked loudly when he picked her up. "Wow! James, James Barnes, you are sooo strong!," she chuckled.
Girl pushed her hair back under her hat. Right now she had no other choice but to trust this stranger or rather a new friend. Even if he was big and scary, he couldn't be a bad guy.
Carolyn relaxed in his arms and sighed softly, putting her head on his shoulder. Some part of his arm felt weird, girl poked it and looked at him, being slightly confused because of what she felt there.
Bucky played along and cocked his brow. "What? Is anything wrong?," he kindly inquired.
He improved the grip around her little waist, he didn't want to let her fall.
"Why do you have a hard arm?," girl asked innocently and poked his shoulder again, then poked rest o his arm to check if she was right.
"Can you keep a secret, little one?," he questioned, making a conspiracy voice, lowering his tone as he glared at her.
Girl blinked and nodded. "Yes, I can, James, James Barnes," she smiled at him to confirm that she was telling the truth.
Bucky nodded in respond before he spoke his mind up. "I'm the member of Avengers team," man explained simply as he was walking down the street with girl in his arm. "So you can be sure you're safe with me, little one," he playfully poked her little, rosy cheek, showing his perfect teeth in a wide smile. "So. Where shall we go now?"
Bucky stopped at a crossroads, he put girl down, looking around.
Girl gasped loudly. "You are the Winter Solder! You are my favorite Avenger!," Carolyn squeaked again with a huge smile on her face. "You are big, strong and good! You are the best! And you are Cap's buddy!," she said excitedly, waving her hands, and then she looked around with Bucky. "Maybe let's go there," Carolyn pointed into the direction of city center. "My house is close to a big tower, I think it has an A letter on the top."
Bucky facepalmed and sighed, grinning. "I didn't get about what tower you were talking about," he summed up, spreading his arms in a powerless gesture. "Sorry, my bad."
Bucky put his flesh hand back to pocket and offered girl his metal hand to hold. "You seem to know a lot about Avengers," he said as they started walking along the sidewalk.
She gladly took his big, metal hand into her tiny palm. Carolyn looked at him and smiled brightly.
She was just a child and didn't see anything bad in Bucky's metal arm. Such a small kid still had enough of innocence to accept him just the way he was.
"I like your metal arm," Carolyn hummed, trying to play with his fingers.
"Thanks," Bucky chuckled. "Who do you like besides me, hmmm?," bearded man asked, looking down at girl.
"I like Falcon! He has a cool wings, I also like Black Widow! She is pretty like my mommy. Also, Ant-man is cool! He is funny just like my dad," she took a deep breath to continue. "Spider-boy is so nice! I saw him once when I went shopping with mommy! He was swinging between the building and Mr. Stark was there with him, too! But I don't like the big green man... He's scary and the bowman is weird, why you keep him when he doesn't have superpowers?," Girl asked and looked up at Bucky, a questioning glance on her face.
Bucky, who was cut off by her monologue, couldn't do nothing more but smile innocently. "I would have to ask Cap about this, and Stark also. They're kinda a root of the team, so every decision that is made is considered mostly by them," he said openly. "You know, thanks for reminding me how old I am, in my time girls didn't pay attention to heroes, instead they preferred to play with dolls, but as I see, a lot has changed irretrievably," Bucky smiled with a joy in his eyes.
Bucky watched his feet take steps across the paving blocks, his dusty canvas sneakers next to the shined pointed-toe leather shoes of the girl walking next to him.
He didn't know why, but it was one of the rare moments when he was feeling truly happy.
"I have dolls!," she protested. "But I also have plush toys, I have action figurines! I even have you, I even have a t-shirt with Cap, mom bought me one on my birthday, I wear it as often as I only can, even if other girls laugh at me because of it. I don't care," she shrugged. "I love to watch the news with my parents because they always talk about heroes and what they did. I really love to draw, you know? I have this BIG art case! I have everything there!"
Carolyn talked like this by the whole way, she wanted Bucky to know as much as possible.
She stopped suddenly, unsure where to go when she finally spotted her house, surrounded by police cars.
"Do you think that something happened?," girl asked looking at Bucky with fear in her eyes.
"I guess I do," he said firmly. "I bet your parents were scared about you, so apparently they've called cops," Bucky explained, leading girl to the nearest police car. "Hey, excuse me, I found her roaming among the surroundings nearby."
Before policeman could say anything, a woman ran up to them. "Carolyn! My babygirl! Where were you?! We were so worried!," woman said and a man joined her.
Carolyn hugged to woman tightly. "I am okay, mommy! I was safe, Bucky helped me! You see?! He is the Avenger!"
Woman blinked and looked at Bucky. "Oh, really?"
He only smiled, nodding. "The most important is that she's safe and sound," he summed up.
Man grabbed Bucky's hand to shake it. "Thank you! Thank you so much! She ran after the kitten and didn't listen when we called her," he said.
Girl blushed and hugged to her mother. "Can Bucky visit us sometimes, daddy? He found me after all."
Man nodded, looking at his daughter, than at Bucky. "Of course he can, he found our little girl."
"I'm sorry, but most likely I'll be busy with fighting bad guys," Bucky smiled at girl and petted her cheek. "Next time listen to your mom and dad, kay? You're a big girl, you have to listen to your parents. If not, and trust me, I'll know about this," Bucky winked at Carolyn's dad, "I'll send Hulk himself to you. And trust me, he's not as nice as I am."
Girl frowned when she heard his answer. "You know what! When I grow up I will be just like you, I will be big and strong like you or Cap, and I will fight bad guys just like you do!," Carolyn said happily.
Bucky cocked his brow and smirked at her. "If you would be a boy, you would be my pal already, hehehe," he stated.
Shortly after he greeted girl's parents and walked off.
Soon he was heading back to the Avengers Tower, this time alone. But this time he didn't feel lonely at all. Somewhere there still was a little human being for whom he already was a true hero, role model, but most of all, a friend.
