Late Night Ice-capades (Wonwoo X GN Reader)

Author's note: It's been a minute since I wrote for idols, so I hope you enjoy it! A bit of fluff & a hint of yearning~

Long fingers splayed across the lid of the ice machine that you'd been struggling to keep open. Your eyes darted up to see who they were attached to, a fluttering feeling already lingering in your gut. His bright eyes sparkled behind his round glasses and his lips twitched for a moment before he gave into the urge to grin boldly at you. Your elbow relaxed from the awkward position you'd been in to attempt to get ice and you straightened immediately, clutching the small bucket to your chest.

"Hello," he murmured softly.

"Hi," you choked out.

Your mind whirred to earlier in the day when you'd first laid eyes on Wonwoo up close.

~~~
You were as grumpy as anyone could be in the morning. Since you'd traveled by yourself to this unfamiliar city, you'd wanted to stay close to the venue. Unfortunately that meant one of the fancier hotels that didn't serve breakfast. You walked toward the elevator, intent on the small shop downstairs to get a snack to hold you over until you could eat more later.
As you neared the sliding doors, you grumbled, seeing that you weren't going to make it. Long fingers curled around the door, stopping it in its tracks. You sighed in relief as you hurried the last few steps onto the elevator. You spun as you walked in, moving to the corner of the small space before looking up to thank the kind stranger.
"Oh," you breathed softly.
He turned to you, black sleep-rumpled hair hanging in his eyes. A mask was pulled over his nose and mouth as he looked curiously at you and nodded politely.
"Thank you," you whispered.
Your insides raged as you grew frustrated with yourself. Your first interaction with Wonwoo and this was how you'd reacted? You couldn't be certain without seeing his full face, but those eyes. You felt like you'd seen them so many times before. At your lowest moments, Seventeen had been there to make you laugh. You cried along with them when they finally received recognition for their hard efforts and they were the whole reason you'd come to this city in the first place. He eyed you again, cheeks rising slightly as he smiled and ducked his head politely again.
Alright, you. Get it together. You shook your head and stood straighter. When the elevator came to a stop, he stepped off with you following quickly behind. As you made your way to the small snack shop, you realized he must be going there as well and you froze. What if he thought you'd followed him here and thought you were a creep? Just... be normal.
You drifted around the snacks, still sleepy from traveling and getting in late. Your arm brushed against his as you reached for the same snack. Your hand jerked back as if lit on fire, making his eyes crinkle in amusement. He took an additional bag of the snack and walked to the kiosk to check out. When he'd paid, he turned back to you, holding out one of the bags. You shook your head, waving him off, but he thrust the snack at you once more.
"For you."
His deep voice directed toward you coupled with yet another gesture of kindness brought a shy smile to your face as you nodded and thanked him again. You walked in companionable silence back to the elevator and waited for it to arrive. You yawned, your hand quickly raising to cover your mouth, completely missing the way he smiled at you behind his mask. When the elevator stopped at your floor, you turned back to him before stepping off, nodding in thanks. After taking a short moment to breathe, you scurried off to your room and leaned against the door as soon as you shut it, mind swirling as you replayed the morning's events so far.
The morning flew by as you got ready. You took your time, watching Seventeen's music videos and brushing up on the setlist. Finally you were ready, adorned with the colors you'd come to associate with the group anytime you saw them. Your lightstick was tucked into your bag, but was just long enough to poke out a bit and you looked at it apprehensively, hoping you wouldn't lose it on your way to the venue.
You'd decided to leave early to explore the area nearby and get more sufficient food than just snacks, so you stepped out into the chilly hallway, heading toward the elevator once again. The wait was thankfully short and you stepped on with ease, the space blessedly empty. As you turned to press your back up against the wall, raised voices carried through to you, coming closer and closer. Your eyes nearly bugged out of your head as a group of guys came into view.
They skidded to a halt, all assessing your outfit and the evident diamond that adorned the inside of your lightstick. You silently begged the ground to swallow you up. It had been one thing to meet Wonwoo alone in casual clothing, but ready for their concert and about to be cramped into a small space with them, it was nearly too much. They crowded in, only able to fit a small portion of the group and your eyes zoned in on one of the floor tiles as you ignored the way your cheeks burned.
When you glanced up, you made eye contact with Joshua who sensed your overwhelm and offered a small 'hi', accompanied by a reassuring smile. Of course. You're an adult. They're adults. They're just regular guys. No big deal.
You clung to the rail behind you, your knuckles straining as they gripped tighter and tighter. A finger brushed against yours before quickly pulling away. Your whole body vibrated, the elevator ride stretching even longer than you thought possible. The finger brushed over yours again, lingering slightly. You decided to chance a glance and froze, seeing Wonwoo bunched up beside you. You realized that you'd been so nervous you hadn't even noticed he'd gotten on and how close he'd had to move in because of the limited space.
He nodded and smiled comfortingly. His eyes were deep, dark, and they sought yours eagerly. You could have sworn a flicker of worry flashed through them but you shrugged it away, shaking your head as the ding sounded through the too-small box and you jumped apart.
Your fingers tingled where his had brushed yours and as they went to the vans that would transport them, you ducked around the corner, running off to who knew where just to get away so you could breathe. As soon as you'd collected yourself and waited long enough to ensure they'd be gone, you turned back toward where you'd come from to go in search of food. The time passed quickly and before long, your feet were taking you to the venue.
Your legs trembled as you got to your seat. You knew you'd be close enough to the stage to see them well but would they be close enough to see you? Would he? You chatted over the hum of other voices, straining to hear those next to you as they introduced themselves. When the lights went down, excited screams reverberated through the area. You quickly inserted your earplugs and waited eagerly with your lightstick in your hand.
As Wonwoo came out, Super's music pounded through his body. He'd opted to try wearing contacts tonight, but his headache wasn't getting any better and he was more than ready to be curled up in bed asleep, not concerned with having to see. As he stepped forward, he noted you. He smiled internally, trying to keep his professional demeanor going strong. He lingered on you - now that he'd seen you again, he was more curious about you, what you liked about the group, who your bias was. He chastised himself, returning his attention back to the matter at hand.
The concert passed too swiftly for you. You swiped at your tears during their thanks to the carats who attended, watching as their eyes sparkled from their own grateful tears. A few who had ended up in the elevator with you had noticed you throughout the concert and made sure to wave when they neared where you stood. All too quickly, after the chorus of Very Nice had been battered into your brain through encore after encore, the lights came up and you followed the stream of people leaving the concert.
Your feet ached and you smiled dreamily at the thought of being curled up in the hotel bed to sleep for the night. Your stomach grumbled on the walk back, so you went straight for the snack area, a small clench in your stomach as you hoped to see Wonwoo again. Greedy, you were. Just for another moment in his presence. You'd had more than most fans ever would and vowed to be grateful for it as you made your way back up to the room.
It was only after changing clothes and curling up under the blanket, you realized how thirsty you were and sighed, throwing off the covers. You grabbed the ice bucket, slipping your keycard into the pocket of your robe as you exited the room. Your steps were slightly sluggish as you hunted for the ice machine. A sigh of relief slipped from you as you finally laid eyes on it. When you lifted the lid, it seemed determined to close, falling back down as soon as you'd propped it open. Your side pressed against the machine as you raised your elbow and attempted to hold the bucket on the same side.
When you reached for the scoop with your other hand, your movement made the lid start to close and a growl of frustration rose from within. You sighed in defeat as you tried to keep it open and hung your head before the smack of a palm against the lid startled you out of your thoughts. The whole of the day's emotions flooded you as you stood, gaping at Wonwoo, ice bucket clutched close.
Your eyes slammed shut as you counted to ten and opened them once more, sure you were dreaming. His grin faltered slightly as he closed the lid. He fidgeted with the tie on his robe and slightly stepped back to keep from making you feel cornered in the small nook of the hallway. You both stood there, staring at each other, his smile slowly sliding from his face.
"Did you enjoy the concert?"
His eyes darted nervously now, not landing on you.
"So much!" You winced as your voice came out with a crack. "You guys were great. It wasn't my first Seventeen concert, but I've never been so close before."
He nodded as he rocked slightly on his heels, his motions tinged with a nervousness.
"Did you have a favorite song?"
Your face heated even more than it had earlier and for a moment you were tempted to dunk your head into the ice machine. You purposely avoided his gaze, taking intense interest in the ceiling above his head.
"Fire," you whispered. You quickly brushed away the images of his outfit for that song that were burned into your mind.
"Sorry? What?"
He leaned in closer, making the blush on your cheeks start to tingle, and your eyes flicked to his, locked in as you murmured 'Fire' once more. A grin that held a hint of impishness quickly spread across his face and he nodded as if that's what he had hoped for.
"I saw you there."
Your mouth went dry as you held his gaze and nodded, slightly enamored by the way his gaze zeroed in to your face as if he could see the heat buzzing beneath your skin. Without a mask on, you were able to see the slow curl of his lips as he watched you, the swell of his cheeks as the corners of his mouth tugged up. His eyes were warm as you took the measure of each other, two souls existing in a moment outside the rest of the world.
"Why are you here?"
Your words came out in a stumble. His nose wrinkled slightly in confusion until he noted your hand gesturing at the ice machine. He lightly tapped his forehead, grimacing.
"Headache. Most of the day. Jet lag always makes it worse."
Your gaze softened on him and you nodded in understanding.
"Happy to be here, but the traveling is a lot. Worse I'm sure for you guys."
"We'd do anything for carats," he said with a soft smile. "Well, within reason."
A nervous giggle burst out of you and he bit his lip, fighting a broad grin. He watched you shift from one foot to the other before reaching for the lid of the machine. You lifted it quickly it and grabbed the scoop, dropping a small amount in the bag he'd brought.
"That enough?"
He gave a short nod, wincing as another pang shot through his mind. He held a hand up, shielding his eyes from the lights that were suddenly too bright. You took the bag from him and sealed it quickly before pressing it lightly against his forehead. He sighed in relief and slumped against the wall, sliding down to tuck his head against his knees. You followed and knelt beside him, keeping the ice against him and setting your bucket to the side.
"Do you need anyone? I can go get help."
Worry struck sharply through you. You were prepared for many things but this had not been one of them. He lifted a hand weakly to shoo away your worries.
"It will pass. Just... give me a minute."
"Is the ice helping?"
"More than you know. Thank you. I... really appreciate it. I know this is a bit unconventional."
"Oh, I don't know. I suppose you're not the first idol I've nursed back to health."
He let out a soft choked laugh and shook his head before clutching it and groaning.
"Very funny," he mused drily.
His hands felt blindly on the ground until he found your free hand and rested his own atop it.
"Thank you. For at the concert. Sometimes it gets overwhelming with so many people watching us, watching me. When I found you in the crowd, it felt like I could just focus on you instead of the chaos of my mind."
You blinked, sure that you would be the perfect picture of an owl with your wide eyes. He grimaced against his knees.
"That probably came out a bit more strange than I intended. I'm sorry. I know it's not ideal idol behavior."
You snorted and flipped your hand up, squeezing his own.
"You're human. I never expected you to have the idol persona turned on 100% of the time."
He sagged slightly, an invisible weight taken from his shoulders. He sat with you in a comfortable silence, the ice easing his pain bit by bit. You both flinched as a door opened and a voice hissed through the hall.
"Wonwoo? Wonwoo, where did you go?"
His head lifted slightly as he found your eyes. You'd shifted the makeshift ice pack to the back of his neck a minute before, leaving your view clear. His damp hair was clinging to his forehead as he drank you in, smiling softly. Your smile mirrored his and a fondness squeezed at your heart. Long legs flew by the nook, skidded to a stop and whirled back around. Mingyu's sharp canines flashed as he grinned down at you.
"Hey! From earlier!"
You gave an awkward wave as Wonwoo winced at the volume of his voice and Mingyu's attention flickered to him, startling when he realized who was sitting beside you. He quickly crouched down and put a hand to Wonwoo's forehead. They had a hushed conversation, too quick for you to understand, before Mingyu stood abruptly and waved back at you.
"Nice to meet you."
He ran off back to their room and once the door had opened and shut, Wonwoo turned back to you. The magic of the night, the suspended moment in time, seemed to be over. He carefully stood and you reached absentmindedly for his elbow to make sure he was steady on his feet. He froze at your touch and turned to you, mouth opening slightly as if to speak.
"A bow feels a bit too formal," he said with what seemed to be a dejected tone.
Your laugh was soft this time, a gentle caress to his slightly pounding head.
"We can make up a secret handshake," you teased.
One side of his mouth curled with an amused smirk.
"Maybe next time." The silence stretched for a moment. "Is it - would it be alright if I hugged you?"
Your mouth popped open in a soft 'o' as you nodded. He stepped closer and his arms came down around you. His chin tucked over your shoulder as he brought you in close. His smell was indescribable, but it was sufficient to say he smelled cozy, like warmth. The condensation from the bag slid down your wrist, making you shiver against him. His arms tightened slightly before he let go of you, gently holding your upper arms as he steadied you.
As he pulled back, his cheek brushed against yours. When you turned your head slightly, he did as well, causing your noses to bump lightly against each other's. His face turned pink with a deep blush as he blinked owlishly in return. He coughed slightly and cleared his throat. The pink spread from his cheeks down his throat as he rubbed sheepishly at the back of his neck.
"Thank you for tonight... for helping me feel a bit more human."
"Anytime," you murmured.
~~~

As you checked out the next morning, your mind was still fuzzy from the previous night's events. The person at the front desk slid a folded piece of the hotel stationary across to you, wishing you a good day as you left. When you stepped outside to wait for your ride to the airport, you unfolded the crisp paper and gaped at the note written in a sloping script.

Thank you again. Travel safely back home. I hope we meet again. Until then, you can get in contact with me at this email.
