Story of a Shifter
Life as a shifter isn’t easy. You see, once you start shifting, it can be hard to remember who you really are. You get so caught up in the experience of becoming someone else, that you feel like you abandon your true self. It is a double-edged sword.
Oh sorry. I should probably explain what is going on. My name is Eric Samuels. I am 19 years old. Never graduated from high school or had a romantic relationship in my life. But believe me, I am much more complicated.

So, long story short. Ashley wanted me to shift into her older brother Miles. It was a long shot, but if she could somehow convince Miles about my power, I could become him and go with Ashley on the camping trip. At first I was hesitant, as she expected. I didn’t want to abuse my power, but at the same time, I felt that I needed to use it.
She texted me and asked if I could come over to assist her in telling Miles. After telling my parents where I was going, I ran over to Ashley’s house and she invited me inside.

Everything was set. The real Miles was chilling at my house for the weekend, pretending to be me. He was pretty good at it too. Everything from my awkward mannerisms to my quiet personality he adopted instantly. The shift must have given him aspects of myself.
I did have to admit though, it was really weird to see someone else with my body, especially Miles. He was years older than me, but suddenly he wasn’t. I was worried he was going to abuse it at first, but he assured me he wouldn’t. He seemed sincere, so I believed him.
After I physically shifted him, I gave him a little cheat sheet with information regarding my life so my parents wouldn’t suspect anything. I could tell he was ready for a weekend of relaxation in my life, so I sent him off.

“Alright, you ready to do this?” I asked.
“Yeah. I’m a little nervous. Can you run the plan by me again?”
“Sure. I’m going to steal something that belongs to each of your uncles. I need you to wait down by the creek and I will come get you. I will turn you into one of them and then I need you to knock them both out when I lure them down here later. When they are both out, I will shapeshift into the other one and we can make our escape. I’m thinking it should be easy to just make up an excuse as your uncles and leave the campground.”

As I walked back towards the hiking trail where Ashley and Uncle Reggie were supposed to be, I ran into Ashley’s mom, who I now had to remember was Toby’s sister-in-law.
“Oh, hey Toby. Where’s Miles? Wasn’t he with you? Your mother said you guys were down by the creek.”
“Uh, y-yeah. Miles and I were trying to find some frogs but I think he ran off somewhere.” I lied nervously in Toby’s voice.
“Hey, is something wrong? You look nervous.” She asked worriedly.
“Nope, nothing’s wrong! Just a little hot out today. Making me act funny. I’m going to head back to camp and get something to drink.”
Ashley’s mother eyed me suspiciously but accepted my excuse and we parted ways. Goddamn, that was close. Guess I haven’t really settled into Toby’s body and confident personality yet. My Eric Samuels was still showing.

As we left the camp in Reggie’s pickup after successfully fooling everybody, all we could think about was our future together. There was no going back now. The real Reggie and Toby would be waking up soon and Ashley’s family would realize we were just impostors. They might try to chase after us, but Ashley and I would already be long gone and disguised as new people.
Ashley sat quietly looking out the window. It was weird seeing someone as cocky as Reggie just sitting there so modestly. I had to remember that behind that rugged man was an insecure teenager.
