This is you—

Onyx eyes onyx hair chipped toothed smile

Nail polish hiding bitten ends

You know piano but you only play alone

And pick the peppers off everything pizza

This is me—

Tired eyes sweatshirt mind adrift

Rough hands covered in paint

Chicken scratch in the margins of every book

I hate them but

I always eat your peppers

This is us—

Highway lines takeout midnight coffee

Spraypaint cans toolbox groceries jumbled in the trunk

Rain outside but we leave the windows open

Streetlights and Green Day and black olive pizza

No peppers
