Will & His Wisp: Some Shit You Know About William Cormac

I will eventually make the all-history version post, but for now, this is the need to knows for my blog.

Joining the Secret Menu soon is William Cormac, Anne’s father and literally the only muse I won’t make a fuss about writing in her place. He’s a fascinating guy on his own but on this post, I want to focus on his relationship with Anne.

Anne is his only daughter; he had her later in life with another woman, but through Anne, he had an heir. This made it possible to escape a loveless marriage more or less still intact, and, having experienced half a lifetime’s worth of misery, made him more open to letting Anne run off the leash, so long as she stood by their established family code of honor. William Cormac was a strict father, but a loving one, letting Anne go without certain rules for the sake of their trust in one another. This would be their undoing.

William educated his child as well as he could, reading her Shakespeare and engaging her in legal and moral arguments. Only personal attacks are shut down. He grew a hot-headed, argumentative little bitch who grew quickly grew into a hot-headed, argumentative big bitch. James Bonny exploited his little girl underneath his nose, and Anne fell victim to him. By the time he came to argue his daughter’s case he was too late to save her in person, though in reputation he exceeded beyond imagination.

When this blog is set, William Cormac is a retired lawyer well into his twilight years, practicing pro-bono on cases he likes and seemingly spending his twilight years reading away in his garden. His time not devoted to pro-bono cases is actually devoted to a full-time search for his daughter, whom he strongly feels is alive. He feels he has failed her twice, for two different reasons: he’s determined not to do so a third.

Anne and her father actually have a quite living relationship, and I’m excited to roleplay as history’s First No. 1 Anne Bonny Fan, William Cormac.

For the purposes of this blog, please imagine Bill Nighy in Emma (2020) as William Cormac and forgive the period inaccuracy.

Will & His Wisp: Some Shit You Know About William Cormac

For the purposes of PotC folks…stayed tuned, cause Bill Nighy is definitely involved and I’m liking the parallels, especially with learning that Anne feels very strongly about not trafficking with the Damned and the cursed. 👀

I question the wisdom of @starlightintheirwake ‘s decision, but so be it!

Anne wipes her face free of gore with an audible, annoyed sniff. This shit is starting to get old, fast. If they don’t put someone nicer in charge soon, there won’t be a soul left from here to the Gate—or however the fuck far along they manage to get before that order goes through after all and half the damn party turns into a bunch of purple squids before enslaving the other half. If they’re lucky, mind. (Gods, what in the hells has she signed on for? And worse, what would happen if she turns her back now, decides enough’s enough and a debt’s paid?)

Instead of shivering at her own thoughts, Anne pulls her companion up, steadies him with what little of her strength remains when he does so.

“Sorry ‘gain ‘bout the alchemist’s fire. Honest t’gods, I didn’t see ye there.”

their arrival had gone smoothly and yet sigge was still unsatisfied. there was a part of him, though small(?), that had wanted to incite more of a reaction. perhaps that was naïve, thinking there would be more of an uproar than there was. he’ll just have to decide the gasps and murmurs of them throughout the rest of the night would be enough until something else happened – what that something else might be, he hadn’t decided yet. only hoped the others would not expect him the swedish family to be so easily forgiving for their non-invitation. are they not also a part of helping the world rebuild after such a terrible loss? they dismiss them before they’ve even given them a chance to try. it’s quite rude, he thinks.

“good morning,” he greets easily, a small grin on his lips to show he’s surely not the madman they must think he is. “how did you find the festivities?” an innocuous tone as he reaches for a few of the delicacies on display at the table he’s found himself at. “i’m afraid we spent most of the night getting settled in our chambers, i do hope we didn’t miss anything too exciting.” not that he’s sure much even happened during the event – he hadn’t seen a single one of the supposed newly betrotheds. he’d hardly even seen the english king or queen themselves.

 :

they had arrived in the dead of night, festivities in full swing, but were far too absorbed in current company to bother making a complete splash. ingrid had been informed that the windsor family had been able to arrange not one but three betrothals. it seemed conspicuous to the swedish queen to say the least, something she would investigate further in due time. it seemed fitting, given their reputation, as if it were planned; timed almost — their arrival coinciding with the festivities, like an angry storm cloud in the distance, ready to ruin an otherwise joyous occasion. it was an oversight, an unfortunate mistake on their part ( one she knew he would no doubt correct ). sigge had been furious their country had not been included in the peace talks.

especially after expecting more of an uproar rather than quite whispers and observing them as animals behind cages as they walked the floor, she knew they would not be so delicate in their reactions for too long. if she knew her husband and herself they would not sit complacent in their exclusions for much longer. eyes scanned the page in front of her, brows knitted together in calm concentration, a teacup in front of her. ingrid had awoken with the breaking of the new day, it was not unlike her to rise early. dark irises flitted up at the sound of her husband's voice. she observed as he attempted to make pleasant conversation with one of the other guests. it would have almost made her smile, if it had not been for their current situation. "it would be wise of you to answer him. you would not want to appear rude now, would you?"

the sound of her voice seemed to put any nervousness hadn’t even realized he had at ease, like calm waters or the smoothness of fine silk. call it familiar territory paired with the fact that their entire reputation depends on this very summit and he’s yet to have a meeting with the swiss king themself, but even the smallest glimpse of his wife over his shoulder had a small grin forming on his lips and a confidence swarming through his veins – he knew where he stood in this world with her at his side. with both of them at his side.

“not to worry, älskling,” he grins something disarming at the noble he speaks to, one clearly intimidated by their very presence like they were predators circling prey and they had no way out. did these people deem him some sort of monster? all he did was show up to a summit he should have been invited to to begin with. sigge dismisses the noble and turns heel with two cups, crossing the room in a few steps and taking his spot beside his wife, offering her one of the drinks. “they seemed to have had previous engagements. not to worry, i’m well caught up – there have been assassination attempts. what do you make of this?”

he addresses her, despite holding the other’s gaze and she couldn’t help the prickling of a smile tick the corner of her lips at sigge’s affectionate pet name. they were never the type to keep formalities in front of others, they would always express their admiration no matter the company — it was one of the many things she loved about them. she folds the book she had been reading closed delicately in her lap as her husband approached. at the sight of his offerings, ingrid finished the last sips of her own cup before placing it to the side.

she accepts the tea wordlessly, appreciating his need to reassure her about his failed conversation with the ignorant guest. they both knew it was entirely necessary, lest she put matters into her own hands. here they were, making an effort to be cordial and acquiescent and yet they were neither accepted or met halfway at the very least. the restraint they showed should have been indication enough that they were here to make peace just like everyone else. “certainly away from us it seems as if we are infected with the plague again,” she remarked offhandedly. “hmm, quite brazen considering how many of us there are and the protection we bring with us. it is certainly a strategic play somehow. the pieces have not yet fallen together yet, avhållen.”
