Amaya almost died for a tiny glow toad, and she accepted that fate.
So In the meantime I watched new season of the Dragon Prince.
1. Why the fuck was it earlier??? I thought I messed up the dates again.

So much Sorvus content in the new reflections short story, I can't handle it. My heart is torn (half of it taken by Ezran's angst, half of it seized by Corvus and Soren being mushy in love with each other).

Hello and welcome to the second TDP Shipping Poll! It’s an online survey that will help us understand the shipping preferences of our fandom. I ran the first poll in 2020 after season 3 and now that season 5 is approaching, I decided it was time to run a new one. Two new ones, actually, as I would like to run one poll before and one - after the upcoming and later compare the results.
So let’s start with this one. The poll will run from June 1st to July 1st. I’m leaving the exact hours vague because I might need an extra hour or two to finish things up. I also leave myself the right to extend the poll if such need arises (e.g. I am physically unable to close the poll or the number of votes is very low)

How does this work?
The poll consists of three main parts: general questions, opinions about specific ships and the final wrap up. The general section covers basic demographic information as well as your shipping preferences. The questions about specific ships are divided into 6 categories to make the lists more manageable. Please note that the 6th category is dedicated to controversial ships - adult/minor, incest and ships with animals. This category will be hidden and you will be able to see it if you choose to.
Which ships are included?
Basically, all ships I've encountered online as well as the ships that people asked me to add, with the only exception being ships with the characters from Tales of Xadia (at least for now). If a ship you like wasn't included, you can submit it manually at the end of the poll and I will include it in the next poll.
Why were problematic ships included?
They are part of our fandom's shipping preferences and without them the picture would be incomplete. As mentioned before, they are hidden and you won't accidentally see them.
However, it is worth pointing out that I only consider adult/minor, incest and animal ships to be problematic. The following may not be everyone's cup of tea, but they're perfectly normal ships: - young adult x late teen ships where the age difference between the young adult and the teen is 5 years or less;
- older adult x young adult ships no matter the age gap. Both characters are adults;
- human/dragon or elf/dragon ships when both characters are adults.
Please remember that just because something squicks you out, doesn't mean it's inherently problematic.
Where will the results be posted?
The results will be published on twitter, tumblr, TDP subreddit and dreamwidth. I will publish the results bit by bit, because there are a lot of different categories to work through.

I must say I love fandom and how dedicated fans are! This is truly enormous. I know how hard it is to come up with questionnaires and opinion polls and whatnot. It goes to show just how invested people are, be it by going through the effort of actually putting together this poll, be it by answering this very very long questionnaire faithfully. I know I did! 192 people took part already! This is quite reasonable sample, actually. Snowballed instead of random, but still. This is a large enough number to have some fun with!

I got some feedback, which I'd like to discuss under cut.
One user provided detailed feedback on age statistics and numbers of choices. As an amateur poll maker, there are many things I don't understand (and probably wouldn't know what to do with) but I'll definitely consider that advice!
Another user suggested doing a shipping poll for other fandoms, which I definitely considered, but it takes a lot of mental energy and I often struggle with that, so I can't make any promises! However, I could help out those who would like to make a similar poll for their fandoms.
One other person said that some ships are in the wrong sections, which is true about one ship - I put a couple into a polyship section! The other ships, however, have their reasons to be where they are.
I wanted to make the noncanon popular ships and rarepairs relatively similar sizes so I took some of the more known ships from rarepairs and put them into the popular ship category. I'm going to restructure these list for my S5 poll, though, so the future lists will better reflect reality!
As far as the controversial ships go - in the current fandom climate, almost anything can be seen as controversial, which is why I defined what I will consider controversial for the purposes of the poll: (1) adult/minor ships where the minor is younger than 16 and the adult is more than 5 years older than them (so, what lies beyond the age of consent according to Lithuanian law, as this is where I'm from), (2) incest of any age, (3) human or elves shipped with nonsapient animals (nonsapient as in incapable of complex thought.) Dragons don't count because they're sapient.
I know there are other categories of ships some people may find controversial but I wanted to make sure I isolate ships that are potential triggers. I hope this clears things out! c:

TDP sure loves its asoiaf references. Barius' pin is the most blatant, but far from the only and definetely not the most significant one. Anyone else noticing the similarities of Tidebound elves and the island of Scumport in particular with the Iron Islands from A Song of Ice and Fire? TDP Season 5 No-Context Spoilers
Okay tdp fans, I wanna share something with you. So I watched season five twice already, once with original audio and once dubbed together with my seven yo son (he was a wee toddler when I first set season one for him to watch back in 2019, you decide if I'm awesome or a bad mom) anyway, in comes episode's 08 final scene with the slithering snakes and my boy just jumps. It's cinematic: as he realizes Callum's gone and done dark magick again my son literally gasps, I hear this sharp inhale of breath and he tears his eyes from the screen and looks at me startled. He can't even talk coherently. He babbles a few times trying to come up with something: "Did he... He... Calum he... Used... Did he use dark magic? What? Did Callum really..?" My boy was floored. He was clearly disappointed. But he was also excited! "That's why he's so sad!" he exclaimed after a beat. I kid you not. My baby. I'm so proud! Also I'm so happy we share the same taste in media hahaha
S5 needed more jammies. Let those kids be comfy, not lying down to sleep on top of the covers in full armor and boots 😭
About Callum’s nightshirt… listen, S5 had so many Callum-Viren parallels, it had to be done. I maintain he’s pulling it off!

Yesss after E08 I was like: "so Callum's gonna have to use dark magic to connect to each of the arcanum?". Maybe. I do not like the look of it... I LOVE IT.
Callum's canonical dark side
I've been thinking... Maybe dark magic stems straight from star magic?
For a second there I even thought the "big reveal" would be that dark magic might just be star magic pure and simple, but that doesn't click.
Then season five came and I've got a little theory: dark magic is corrupted star magic, it's star magic backwards. This could make sense because while dark magic drains power from life, by way of killing/exploiting body parts from animals and magic creatures, I propose star magic creates life. Case in point: Sir Sparklepuff, aka viraavos' baby.
What Viren did there with Aaravos' help was using his own blood (therefore his own power/life force) and some incantation to bring life into the world. If that was indeed star magic (I'm inclined to think so) then star magic created a magical creature with its own unique existence.
What do y'all think?
I don't know what that would mean for the story but... the wheels are turning in my head.
I watched this with my son and he was convinced Soren wasn't just cured from some really bad disease, but died and was revived by Viren.
Not sure if I agree but the tdp team sure made that interpretation possible...
Are we ever to learn more about this?
Or see Soren actually talk about this experience, or maybe about how he feels about when Claudia gave him his leg-movements back with dark magic on season two?

I mean Callum and Amaya being similar is not just something someone thinks, they are canonically similar. As per the Janai quote @theredhairedmonkey brought up above, but also like, word of god. There is a whole song in the soundtrack titled Like Aunt, Like Nephew.
It’s never not gonna be funny watching people fixate over vague Callum-Viren parallels when the show EXPLICITLY mentions the similarities between Callum and Amaya instead.
But actually.
Like, are there a few similarities between Callum and Viren? Yes.
Are they similar people? Not by a long shot.
They are foils, for sure, and probably the most important foil relationship in the show. But their foil relationship rests more on how different they are despite similar circumstances (I.e. both being high mages to a king).
There’s probably a list of ten or so named character that Callum has more in common with than Viren.
