Ted Lasso 🤝 ATLA 🤝 being a deceptively deep three-act television comedy about our weakest moments and the choices we make to be better for ourselves and the people around us, featuring some of the best “redemption arcs” ever put to screen.
My favorite show is ending next week, so it’s time to develop a new personality trait (read: piece of media to become obsessed with). I’m thinking Breath of the Wild, which I may or may not have spent six hours playing yesterday.

The way so many of the characters this episode had story beats dealing with their inner child was something so powerful to see:
Roy receives an endearingly childish shirt from his niece, which he wears and is then told that he looks happier than ever in it — and then proceeds to tell Keeley how he feels in said shirt
Rebecca is about to have a panic attack, visualizes her inner child in her place, and then works herself through the anxiety, choosing to go to the meeting because that child deserves to stand up for herself
Nate looks through his childhood things, plays the violin, and learns that all along his dad was really proud of him and just wanted him to be happy — and then he does a kind gesture for Will
Keeley reminds Rebecca that all of the men in the meeting were once little boys, and like the mirror scene, this allows her to appeal to the boys inside all of those men as she stands up to them
At one point or another, each of the characters were just kids who had all these hopes and dreams, but life happens and we all deal with shit, but by confronting the wounds they faced in their childhood and healing their inner child — the characters are allowed to grow and move on
Top 6 moms I want to see in Ted Lasso Season 3 (because making moms into full characters is awesome):
6. Isaac McAdoo
I mean come on, Isaac is totally a momma’s boy. How did she end up raising such a star? Isaac has grown so much from being bully sidekick to the one of the most lovable members of Richmond. I bet his mom is so sweet and I would love for him to feel like he has learned to do her proud as both a captain and a person.
5. Trent Crimm
James Lance has talked quite a bit in interviews how he and Jason would discuss Trent’s background and the way Trent’s domineering father shaped the person Trent became. This show is obviously a show about fathers, but that leaves a lot of curiosity about Trent’s mother. Is it possible we will see a personal side of Trent in S3? Is she a positive force in Trent’s life?
4. Jamie Tartt
This one requires little explanation. We all remember Jamie’s speech in Two Aces and it seems he has a lot of love for his mother. I want to meet her!!
3. Ted Lasso
Now the only reason why Ted isn’t higher is because we have already learned so much about his relationship with his mom throughout the show. We know she was kind, sometimes to a fault, and we know Ted feels responsible for her well being. I want to meet her as her own woman, not as simply a mother or widowed wife. Who is she and what does she want in this world? How has Ted maybe missed this?
2. Phoebe
There has been speculation that the nurse taking care of Sharon in the ICU is Phoebe’s mother. I’m not so sure. But I wouldn’t be surprised that the show has been constructing a larger plan for the introduction of her character all this time. There is a noticeable gap in the way we never meet Phoebe’s mother. We know her ex is “a living piece of shit” and she is quite busy in her (success) job. She must be a close friend to Roy and a good mother to Phoebe as well. She is up high on this list because she is so mysterious, her presence feels inevitable, and with relatives like Phoebe and Roy, she could only be a joy to meet.Â
3. Keely Jones
I really want to meet Keely’s mom. I want to know the woman Keely first modeled herself after. I want to know if they’re close, if she’s from which Keely’s abandonment issues stem. I want to know if she’s proud of her daughter and all of her accomplishments or if she is a stumbling block in Keely’s life. I want to know Keely better and for a character who cares so much about the women in her life, her mom must be a truly unique character of her own.

Laughing my ass off imagining that Trent asked Ted why he ran off during the match because he didn’t want to have to spell diarrhea

The problem with Ted Lasso S3
It doesn’t feel like the last season.
Let’s imagine Ted Lasso was like any other show, slated to keep running until it eventually concluded after 5 or even 10 seasons. If we as viewers knew this, would these episodes feel so lopsided? Would the missing thematic tie-ins feel so odd? Would new characters and plot points feel like frustrating distractions?
Even with the entire season written and filmed, Apple is still not letting anyone doing press for the show say outright this is the last season. Why? To make space for a spin off? Or....maybe this isn’t the last season after all?
Either way, it definitely seems like the writers room were given the directive to not make these episodes feel like they’re leading to an end. And they certainly do not. However the strength of Ted Lasso has always been the foresight of the writers. Every character, line, and scene felt meaningful because they were - everything lead to an inevitable end. Without that, we’re left with a show that doesn’t feel bad per se. But definitely off.
