Happy Post-Halloween!
I haven’t talked about my Redwall costume very extensively, but it is a dear treasure to me. I have been designing, creating, and collecting clothes (some pretty beautiful ones) for my Redwall character for the past two-ish years! You may have seen my design worn in all the wonderful drawings on my page. I have countless lofty goals for myself, and I'm sure I won't be done until decades from now, but c'est la art. Nevertheless, I do have quite a good costume as it is, and how could I not wear something so special?
I have been wearing my Redwall outfit as my Halloween costume for two years so far and I will continue doing so indefinitely. (I think I do a better job every year BLUSH) And now, I would love to share it with you guys!
This is me with my ADORABLE mouse face which I am SO proud of
These are photos from last year (while I was in the same state as all of my costume materials) while I was getting ready for a party- you can see: - my habit (which has a very cool hood) - my wooden glasses chain, which I made - my orange shawl, which can also be worn as a scarf! - the habit cord I crocheted- the habit came with a cord, but I wanted something authentically emotionally significant - and my two necklaces which I "corded" myself- one is a painted metal pendant of a flower basket, and one is my very own cross-stitch Martin the Warrior tapestry replica (and my prized possession) You can also see a pair of hare earrings, which I love but have recently switched out for three lovely pearls.
Many other aspects of my outfit are obscured beneath the habit, including a tan dress and a homemade blue apron with flowery medieval pockets. I keep some trinkets and necessities in the pockets, and have hopes to one day open a slit in the habit to access the inner skirt. As I said, I have lofty goals...
And this is me being so very cute (last year and this year, respectively)! I've been evolving my technique for my mouse makeup in the attempt to make it "natural" and nature-ey, which I am very excited about, but an unfortunate side effect is that it kind of rubbed off by the time the second photo was taken.
I hope to share more of my outfit when I am able- including details of the necklace, which I shared on the Re:Redwall podcast zine- and to share developments as they come. In the meantime, I hope that everyone will be happy with my linking the company I got my habit from!
Irongate Armory is a company located in Finland that sells authentic recreation of "historical items," including my habit! Not kidding, I cried when I found their website. The manufacturer of the "green monks robe" is listed as "Windlass Steelcrafts," which makes historical and fantasy products, and also sells the habit on their website. Unfortunately, the item is not currently in stock in either location.
Thank you for your festive entertainment of my costumery story, and I welcome you all to this post!
This is from last year, so the commentary on the show may be outdated, but I really wanted to share the artwork showcase! They really struck me.
Apparently, Taggerung was illustrated by Peter Standley. I wanted to learn more, so I found the list of Redwall's illustrators (borrowed from the Wikipedia):
Troy Howell - U.S. cover artist for all novels
Pete Lyon - UK cover artist for first three novels, 1986 - 1989
Gary Chalk - chapter icon illustrator for first six novels, 1986 - 1993 Chapter illustrator for: Redwall Mossflower Mattimeo Mariel of Redwall Salamandastron Martin the Warrior
Chris Baker - UK cover artist, 1991 - 2001; chapter icon illustrator 1998 - 2000; consultant for the Nelvana TV show Chapter illustrator for: Marlfox The Legend of Luke Lord Brocktree
Allan Curless - chapter icon illustrator, 1994 - 1997 Chapter illustrator for: The Bellmaker Outcast of Redwall Pearls of Lutra The Long Patrol
David Wyatt - UK cover artist 2002 - 2007
Peter Standley, evidently, who was not on the masterlist and is only listed under "illustrator" for Taggerung. So, Taggerung
David Elliot - chapter icon illustrator, 2002 - 2008 Chapter illustrator for: Triss Mossflower-anniversary edition Loamhedge Rakkety Tam High Rhulain Eulalia! Doomwyte
Sean Rubin - final chapter icon illustrator, 2010 - 2011, Audiobook cover artist Chapter illustrator for: The Sable Quean The Rogue Crew
Christopher Denise - picture book illustrator
Edit: also, Brett Blevins illustrated the Redwall Graphic Novel!
Sean Rubin has always been my favorite- I really enjoyed reading The Rogue Crew and I've always thought his drawings were just so gorgeous (and emotional, they make me emotional).
Do the rest of us have favorites, as well?
Anyway, all wonderful drawings.
#so much of my job is copying from the Wikipedia #this is not a “job” #me slaving away to serve only myself
In honor of Netflix buying the rights to Brian Jacques’ Redwall series, here is some of the chapter title art from my all-time favorite Redwall book:

"Putting this delight in the pleasures of food on the page was Jacques’ goal, as both a fantasy and corrective."
If anyone hasn’t read tv tropes section for queer tropes in Redwall, it’s literal gold. https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/HoYay/Redwall

Redwall sweater ($10) designed by AmarinalevinHandknits.
Redwall is a series of children’s books by Brian Jacques, based on the adventures of different mice and their enemies. Matthias and Mariel are pictured on the front of this sweater, holding hands against the backdrop of the steaming volcano. The back has boxes of scenes: Mariel with her string, a sword, a castle, and a volcano. One sleeve has the Redwall castle and the other sleeve has the moon rising between two hills. There is a nod to Medieval elements in the trim patterns. On the wrists and hem there are growing red and green diamonds on purple, and green circles and curving lines in greens. The neck trim is blue and yellow triangles, which are echoed on the sides in diamonds.
made a Redwall wallpaper for my gf 🗡️ the little isolated Matthias mouse is by the wonderful artist @wonderarium :)
Thoughts on Rakkety Tam
We have only two books left, folks :( Those will probably just be one post before I give my overall thoughts
I had to read this one because otherwise I would get through this entire thing and go “damn it did I forget that book AGAIN”
Lady Melesme ok let's see if she does anything “she's sending ye a drum!” I love how everyone is shocked when canonically, 1000 years ago or whatever, they used a log when the bells were being created.
Immediately we have cannibalism and a character telling the main characters to go to hell lmao maybe I judged this too harshly at first.
Bloodlight is mentioned twice at least. The first time I can understand bc it refers to Tam, who may not know the term bloodwrath, but the second is by a Long Patrol hare Fortindom. Non-badgers can get bloodwrath. Mayhaps this was the beginning of a lesser form of bloodwrath.
I like how the hares don't adhere to the dichotomy and immediately thought squirrels killed their fellows, also the language barrier. Then this bird thinks Tam is also a vermin. So I guess the dichotomy was slightly challenged in this book, congrats to us!
“Only a fool rises to the bait of h’another fool.” things we all can learn.
The map is facing...somewhat behind Salamandastron, with more focus on the land. Other maps face somewhat in front of it, with the mountain being on the edge of the ocean, and this is the map that has stuck in my head for decades. So when it said the Squirrelkingdom was South of Salamandastron, I was wondering how this grove of trees was just in the ocean.
I imagined Tam and Armel to be a bit older than the writing suggests. Not as old as Brag and Saro but older than the typical heroes of the books. They're maybe just entering their mid seasons.
Brigadier Wotwot 💀
Tam’s personality is a little.overwhelmed by everyone else. Doogy is a delight. That's an issue a lot of these paired up protagonists have (Triss and Shogg, Buckler and whoever that was) I like the focus on his heritage being stronger than others with his weapon choices, and more would have been nice.
I think this is the most chapter art we've gotten with a villain. I guess Gulo was just that fun to draw!
This may be one of 2 books (I remember Doomwyte being similar) where the Abbeybeasts are pragmatic about the need to fight. Screeve was very casually “ya I just killed that bastard with a rake”
20 books in and I just now wonder: where do they go to the bathroom.
“Doogy Plumm threw up his paws in resignation. “Och, that explains everythin’. He should’ve been called Martin the Destroyer o’ Weapons.” Legit had me laughing.
This one is more tactical than others, focusing on the surroundings of Mossflower more than a battle at the very end. Look at how the foebeast had a plan to lock the hares out from Redwall that almost worked. As a whole, it's refreshing.
