Those annotations I did to Martin’s I-Am That Is poem!
I’m not gonna write them all out now but it’s good stuff

I drew another self-portrait!

I’ve been taking an art class for the past month-ish, and I’m shocked to see my skills improve so quickly- I’m proud of all the art I’ve made. This is the newest update of my likeness (we got a haircut). I’m especially fond of my smiley squinty eyes and my ability to draw such cute fat shapes!

Look! I’m just so cute!!!
Have I talked about my "I am the teller of tales" opinion and how I view Jacques' books as less of novels and more of records or anecdotes?
A couple of days ago I reblogged a post about the anagram in Martin's poem and it reminded me about this. I say it so much that I'm not sure if I haven't already made a post.
So many Redwall books- Lord Brocktree, for example- are written by someone in Redwall or Mossflower Country history. The novel is embedded in a scroll, a prologue/epilogue kind of deal written by a recorder of some sort. Moreover, these recorders are largely different individuals. Even when the story isn't recorded by one of them, Brian Jacques names himself "the teller of tales."
Something about me is that I have a hard time accepting or understanding contradictions in "the story," because Redwall is SO important to me- and this is my answer. If these stories are so "real," then in his creation of them, Jacques is informing me of events in Mossflower. It stands to reason, then, that a record of thousands of years and dozens of authors is going to have contradictions.
In my head, this is a record of Redwall, and I think that makes the history richer. It makes me happy. Thinking of these mice writing history books makes it all the more real.
Phylogeny of weasels in Martin the Warrior and Salamandastron: An Exercise in Systematics
I am taking an introductory biological anthropology class this term and recently had a "fake evolutionary tree" assignment. Instead of the cartoon cats provided, I wanted to talk about Redwall. I chose five characters off the "weasel" page on the wiki, which I will share with you now.

So, this is obviously ridiculous and hilarious, and I would love if my readers would read through all the characters.
Allow me to elaborate. Theodosius Dobzhansky said that "nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution." The goal here was to recreate a false evolution of individuals who truly have little to do with the matter. Therefore, I kind of had to work backward.... I said to myself "I know that Ferahgo and Klitch are related, so I have to place them like this and come up with a trait that justifies it... aha! Ferahgo is allegedly from the southwest, and so I can say that Klitch is as well." This is my fourth (?) iteration, and what I'm saying is that it's all fake and wrong and I do really enjoy it.
My favorite of these genetic traits is "leader," and I was going to put "Scottish" for Klitch's hat (and therefore probably also Ferahgo) and Fleabane's cloak-kilt-shirt-thing, but I couldn't make it fit in the diagram. Also, notice that "leader" evolved independently at two points!
It is fiendishly delightful (I a full of adjectives) to make a scientific "tree" of these characters, it is scientific, and thus I must follow rules. It may have been a lot more fun if I had been able to use traits like "hat," "stupid," "ponytail," and "Scottish." Alas, they were not the result I came up with when placing the weasels (and rat). I did try to use these traits, but I just couldn't make it work. Maybe I am missing something and I could do it a more fun way the second time around- possibly through choosing more characters, or maybe it is just a result of the whole project being a complete fabrication.

Nevertheless, the cladogram is pretending to be a scientific hypothesis, and I will treat it as such. The nature of cladograms is that they employ a theoretical common ancestor at each branching point. For example, The crossroads after "weasel" shows that all of the following characters are weasels, but Ferahgo and Klitch branched off into their own line and did not follow the evolutionary lineage of the rest of the taxa after "weasel." So, there must be an ancestor of Ferahgo and Klitch that wandered away from the main line and began the speciation process.
The multiple-greats-grandparents of Ferahgo and therefore Klitch can be assumed to be the start of that line. For the rest of my fake taxa, though, I ask who the common ancestor might be? Who was the original Fleabane-and-Rotnose? Great question, genuinely, I know.
My second question is, if these are taxonomic groups, then they need Linnean names! What is the scientific name for Hisk, or Cheesethief? I propose Ferahgous something for Ferahgo and Ferahgous annoyingus or something for Klitch. There seems to be a general consensus on his poor character.
Lastly, if these are the groups at hand, where do we place other characters? What new groups would need to be created? Moreover, what cladogram could be made for goodbeasts or mice? Where would I place myself?! If this was the only tree for the whole series, I'd like to be a Fleabane or a Rotnose, but I'd prefer to be grouped with something more like mice.

Anyway, thank you all for entertaining my phylogeny. My ears are open for elaborative (and for that matter, normal unelaborative) thoughts, and happy Halloween!

I’ve been talking to my friend and they’re very motivated about a Redwall oc, I’m very excited and I love it. The idea is that they’re from the island in the great inland sea so they’re kinda wacko. Love. Ahh!!

Happy Post-Halloween!
I haven’t talked about my Redwall costume very extensively, but it is a dear treasure to me. I have been designing, creating, and collecting clothes (some pretty beautiful ones) for my Redwall character for the past two-ish years! You may have seen my design worn in all the wonderful drawings on my page. I have countless lofty goals for myself, and I'm sure I won't be done until decades from now, but c'est la art. Nevertheless, I do have quite a good costume as it is, and how could I not wear something so special?
I have been wearing my Redwall outfit as my Halloween costume for two years so far and I will continue doing so indefinitely. (I think I do a better job every year BLUSH) And now, I would love to share it with you guys!
This is me with my ADORABLE mouse face which I am SO proud of

These are photos from last year (while I was in the same state as all of my costume materials) while I was getting ready for a party- you can see: - my habit (which has a very cool hood) - my wooden glasses chain, which I made - my orange shawl, which can also be worn as a scarf! - the habit cord I crocheted- the habit came with a cord, but I wanted something authentically emotionally significant - and my two necklaces which I "corded" myself- one is a painted metal pendant of a flower basket, and one is my very own cross-stitch Martin the Warrior tapestry replica (and my prized possession) You can also see a pair of hare earrings, which I love but have recently switched out for three lovely pearls.
Many other aspects of my outfit are obscured beneath the habit, including a tan dress and a homemade blue apron with flowery medieval pockets. I keep some trinkets and necessities in the pockets, and have hopes to one day open a slit in the habit to access the inner skirt. As I said, I have lofty goals...

And this is me being so very cute (last year and this year, respectively)! I've been evolving my technique for my mouse makeup in the attempt to make it "natural" and nature-ey, which I am very excited about, but an unfortunate side effect is that it kind of rubbed off by the time the second photo was taken.

I hope to share more of my outfit when I am able- including details of the necklace, which I shared on the Re:Redwall podcast zine- and to share developments as they come. In the meantime, I hope that everyone will be happy with my linking the company I got my habit from!

Irongate Armory is a company located in Finland that sells authentic recreation of "historical items," including my habit! Not kidding, I cried when I found their website. The manufacturer of the "green monks robe" is listed as "Windlass Steelcrafts," which makes historical and fantasy products, and also sells the habit on their website. Unfortunately, the item is not currently in stock in either location.

Thank you for your festive entertainment of my costumery story, and I welcome you all to this post!
Meeeeeee 🤭? Happy birthday me??? Birthday me :DD Thank you I love it so much ♥️♥️♥️

happy birthday, @rose-of-redwall !! i wonder what they're reading....

Thoughts on Slagar
I was talking with my lovely partner about Slagar the Cruel. He hasn't read the books, but he's absorbed enough from my ramblings and things to form his own thoughts (:)). Slagar always seems to be a fan favorite of those who only know just some about Redwall, which I think is great. Slagar is great (awful).
The conversation started with me saying "Do you remember Chickenhound/Slagar?"
He says "Of course. He's the one with the cool checkered mask right?"
"Yes he's the one with the mask. So, same dude [Chickenhound and Slagar (spoilers, haha)], right? I HATE Chickenhound, but I think Slagar is so great I love him."
So that's point one, I think it's kind of funny about me. Slagar is so fun and evil and camp, but I will just never ever forgive Chickenhound for being stupid and the worst.
Then, boyfriend had some really interesting thoughts that I'd like to share! Thoughts from a new audience, if you will.
"The checkered mask and cape is so cool because it completely conceals the very defining features of a fox, like the shape of the head and the bright orange color, but it does it by replacing it with such a striking pattern that it also erases the shape of him. But it’s so unique and so bold, even more so than a fox. He stands out so much yet is so mysterious and anonymous. Very fey." I said, "AND it conceals his broken face. So it replaces something he hates with something recognizably scary but also costumey. I don't know how to explain, but it’s powerful and monstrous because it’s so fun but at the same time he’s so cruel." Boyfriend says: "It does more than that, it makes him a new kind of beautiful. (I’m just projecting and romanticizing though it’s your book you know more.)"
I wanted to share because I thought this was so interesting! Thank you, goodbeasts all!
In the first book of Castaways of the Flying Dutchman, of the same name, Ben befriends the old sailor Jon Preston (my favorite guy) by singing an old sailing song.
It's so cute because Ben is being disarming and he seems so young that he shouldn't know that song but they're bonding over Go Down You Blood Red Roses. It's a shanty, of course, so it's designed to be sung together. It's so good.
Needless to say, it's an adorable and (personally) impactful scene. In my general unsatiable need to consume the Brain Jacques books with my soul, I scampered my way over to Spotify to find the song. After testing and repeated listening, this is my favorite version, by Paul Clayton in the album Whaling and Sailing Songs from the Days of Moby Dick (Remastered):
(Here is the YouTube link)
I am in love with this little song. As some of you may be wondering, as did I, what are the "blood red roses" in reference? I did some research, and it's old enough that we don't have a consensus, but here is an article that I found that's written by a musician group. There are a couple of guesses as to what the phrase means, as well as other phrases repeated in the song. (I'm just delighted by old-fashioned sailor culture).

I love this song so much, and seeing as I am determined to create my own Castaways content, I wanted to share it. (Fill out the tag, you know.) I listened to it over and over and over when I first found it. It's so perfectly niched and makes me feel happy and safe. Much love, Brian Jacques and Paul Clayton. Much love Ben and Mr. Preston and all of you.

Hi friends! I wanted to share the finished product of this magnum opus sweater of mine (from my other blog, shhhh). The design of the sweater is very much based off of myself, and I spent a lot of time weaving (crocheting, if you will) my interests into the project. Therefore, of course, it has a lot of Redwall inspiration! The bottom cuff is Redwall Abbey inspired, with a little front door with a mouse inside near the buttons. There are also many animals throughout the piece :). There was no question as to whether I’d include Redwall in the sweater, of course. I wanted to share my art here!
The sweater is finished!

56 patches and 6 and a half months later, I finished what I have named my Lofty Goals Sweater on the morning of Sunday, May 12.

This sweater is my baby, I had SUCH a fun time working on her and weaving myself into her. Thank you for everyone's enthusiastic support along the way, and to all the people who complimented me on the street, here (as promised) is the finished product!

Please feel free to ask about any patches, l'd love to talk more about my work.
Thank you to @roll-for-charisma and @blue-p0tat0 for the photography and @toddhowardschildhoodbully for posing me!
Yesterday was Brian Jacques' birthday ♥️
I was on traveling all day, and did not manage to write anything. However, yesterday, 6/15/2024, would have been Brian Jacques 85th birthday, had he been alive to see it. So, here I am, saying happy birthday to Mr. Brian Jacques ♥️ and, as always, thank you for everything you have done ♥️

They were very brave! They poked their nose out once before I could get my camera out, and I just happened to be looking in their direction to see their little face. They ran out further and further until they crossed the whole sidewalk and didn't turn back ☺️ smart creature~
