Top panel: Penny is sitting in a chair in front of a door, blocking the exit. The surrounding wall is blue. She's wearing her school uniform and two green barrettes in her short hair. There are three small scars on her face, one on her forehead and one on each cheek. She has a confrontational look on her face and her arms are crossed. She is saying, "You heard me. I'm not moving from this spot until I'm satisfied that you two have made peace. You've both avoided this issue long enough. Ricky, you have a lot to say, and you've been holding it in. And Ocean, you need to hear what he has to say. I love you both, but you've left me with no other choice. This needs to happen NOW."
Bottom panel: Ricky and Ocean, also wearing their school uniforms, have apprehensive looks on their faces. Ricky has a small scar on his left cheek and he's in a wheelchair, and Ocean has a nasal canula. Both protest at the same time, Ocean speaking and Ricky using an AAC, "Penny, PLEASE don't make me do this right now!"
Panel 1: Penny leans in, crossing one leg over the other as she settles into place. She says, "Sorry, but my mind is made up."
Panel 2: Ricky and Ocean look at each other nervously. A large ". . ." sits between them.
Panel 3: Ocean crosses one leg over the other and looks away, saying, "Darn it, Penny! This is a fire hazard!" to which Penny replies, "Well then you better get to making amends, QUICK. Go ahead, Ricky."
Panel 4: Ocean looks on nervously as Ricky begins typing, ready to get this over with. Another ". . ." is above Ocean's head.
Panel 1: Ocean leans slightly towards Ricky, trying to see what he's about to say. Out of view, Penny says, "No peaking, Ocean. Let him finish."
Panel 2: Ricky inhales and exhales as he prepares to express himself.
Panel 3: A forward facing view of Ricky and Ocean. Ricky's expression shows disappointment while Ocean's shows guilt. Blocks of text obscure the outer halves of their faces. They read: "Alright. There is a lot I could correct you on. First, please don't refer to me as 'sweet little Ricky Potts.' I'm the same age as you. We're almost legal adults. All of us are past the point of 'sweet little' anything. Don't call me 'sweetie,' you're not my moms. Second, while I CAN read, and while having a feeding tube doesn't mean someone is knocking on death's door, and while I DO, in fact, most likely have more than "two, three years" left to live. . ."
". . . The fact is, I would still deserve respect, even if I couldn't read, even if tube feeding weren't sustaining me long-term, even if I WAS closer to death. None of these things would make me worth less than you. Some people's disabilities DO affect their cognition, and that's not a shameful thing, and that was why I never corrected a lot of the assumptions you've made."
Panel 1: A closeup of Ricky's hands holding his AAC in his lap. More text blocks continue: "But here's the thing: You went beyond just assuming my abilities. You made assumptions about my WORTH. And that's not for you to decide."
Panel 2: A closeup of the lower half of Ocean's face, showing the oxygen tubing in her nose and hanging over her ear. Ricky's text continues: "All give of you joined me in disability the second that roller coaster crashed. What if someone had deemed you unworthy of living? I wouldn't want that. For you. . . For myself. . . For anyone."
Panel 3: Penny is smiling excitedly, pleasantly surprised as Ocean replies, "I. . . You're right. I have no defense. I'm so sorry. I want to fix this, really! We all got another chance. . . I want to use it for good. What can I do to make this up to you?"
Panel 4: Ricky has a forgiving smile. He answers, "For me? Not a thing. I've always known and loved who I am. No one can ever take that from me, and nothing you've said or done could diminish it. For the rest of the world? Love your fellow human, for all their strengths and limitations."
Panel 1: Ocean smiles and clasps her hands together. She answers, "Yes! I'll start with you! If you would tell me. . . What are some things you love about yourself?"
Panel 2: Ricky is shown outdoors with a starry night sky and tall grass in the background. There's a purple tint and he's in his wheelchair, adjusting a telescope. He begins to answer: "I'm so glad you asked." and continues with "My favorite planet is Pluto. . ."
Panel 3: Ricky is in his wheelchair focused intently on a red Nintendo DS. A black cat with long ears and yellow eyes hangs on his back, its arms resting on his shoulders. The text continues: ". . . I've beaten every Pokémon game. . ."
Panel 4: Ricky is shown in bed, just woken up. His hair is messy and he is shirtless and wearing a pair of dark blue pajama pants with silver stars on it. He has a feeding tube in his stomach with a drain sponge dressing taped down around it. He's smiling big with one eye closed as a white cat happily nuzzles his face, standing on its back legs and hanging on his shoulder as he pets it. His other hand is petting a sleeping brown tabby cat on its head. A green-eyed tuxedo cat is down at his legs, kneading on his pants. He continues ". . . And I'm a cat dad, to 14 rescues." The last text block on this page reads: "And that's not even the half of it."
Panel 1: Ocean stands up, her hands on Ricky's arm. She says, "Please, let me get to know you better. The real you-- ALL of you." Ricky nods.
Panel 2: Penny smiles and begins to get up out of her seat. She says, "Alright."
Panel 3: Ocean looks up with surprise as Penny opens the door and says, "You two are free to go now."
Ricky and Ocean are shown from the back, paused and looking at each other. They've left the room they were previously held in and are heading towards a row of lockers in the hallway. Ocean's portable oxygen is in a brown shoulder bag. On the back of Ricky's wheelchair are several stickers: the disability pride flag, the pansexual pride flag, the polyamory pride flag, and one with a magenta heart next to a green peace sign. Ocean says, "Dang. . . I've really been missing out, huh?" to which Ricky replies with his AAC, "Well, in the dear words of our dear friend, Mischa: My life is awesome."

@june-doe-2024 day 30: Disability Pride Month

***From my Everyone Lives AU wherein an alternate Karnak is the kids' nurse following the Cyclone accident***

In which the kids all come back to life and Ricky finally gets to say his piece. I felt my AU was a good vehicle for this and will probably incorporate this into the fic later down the road.

Wooooooooo!!! My last June Doe for this year! I had the time of my life doing this event. Usually when I do month long art challenges like these I fizzle out by the end of the month and either don't finish or by my last few pieces I'm just not feeling it anymore but this time I think I really finished strong with my last few days. Or, well, comics have never exactly been my STRONG suit but I felt like this conversation deserved one. This is a conversation that we never really got to see in canon. Had I had more time, I probably would have made it even longer.

I always felt like Ricky sort of avoids confronting Ocean on the things she was wrong about, for a lot of reasons. For one, he'd rather occupy his time with things he sees as productive and fulfilling, and he was just never sure he'd get anywhere trying to explain these things to her. For another, he's very observant and he's seen lots of other people's conflicts with her devolve into a debate which she's always trying her damnedest to win. But while he knows who he is and he never felt the need to prove himself to her, deep down it does bother him that this issue never got addressed, and Penny can see it. Something I noticed (at least, in the 2016 version wherein Ricky still has enough lines lol) is that Ricky doesn't really care what Ocean thinks of HIM, but where he DOES feel the need to correct her is her views on the whole of HUMANITY. I think after the accident, getting a lot of time to reflect, he would come to realize that her misconceptions about disability not only affect the way she sees him, but the way she sees disabled people in general. I also did reference the 2018 version here: in that run, Ocean had a line speculating that Ricky had "two? three years?" left to live, insinuating that that's why he shouldn't be the one to come back.

Yes, I definitely could see Penny separately luring the two of them and then trapping them in a room with her to put this to rest, lol. It's the kind of tough love she'd be bold enough to provide. She definitely thinks he deserved a chance to speak his mind and that Ocean owes him an apology.

Mostly. . . Ricky just wants Ocean to love her fellow human. I can't wait to write more of my AU because Ocean's really going to shift her focuses after surviving the crash and I feel like writing all the changes in her thinking and beliefs will be interesting.

Big thanks to @victoriawaterfield for hosting the June Doe event. I had a wonderful time and it worked wonders for my art!!
