For some odd reason, every time that you tried to get off your bed, you were pulled by a pair of arms that snaked themselves around your waist. "What are you doing with Azula's knife?"
Zuko's eyes went narrow and his face tight and small, and Mai knew her mother would be furious with her if she heard her ask that. They aren't just a prince and princess anymore, her mother had hissed. They are the prince and princess. You need to remember that.
As if Mai could forget.
"It's not Azula's knife!" he yowled, like a wounded animal. "It's mine!"
"Really?" she snorted. "Because it's not you I see with it all the time."
"Yeah, because she keeps stealing it," he shot back, holding the knife close. "Uncle gave it to me. It's mine."
Mai looked him up and down, and felt bold. Bolder than her mother would like at all. "I think if Azula wants something, it becomes hers. I don't think there's anything you can do about it."
"It's not hers," he said fiercely. Neither had been Ty Lee's new hair pin, or Mai's mother's mochi, but they were now. Mai couldn't figure out if she actually wanted them, or if she just wanted to show she could take them.
"It's gonna be." She thought of something. "Unless you got somewhere to hide it. Somewhere Azula doesn't know about."
He glanced at her warily. "I got somewhere."
She followed him into his room, uncertain. He hadn't sent her away, but he kept looking at her like he didn't know what she was doing.
He stopped in front of the door to his dressing room, and glared at her. "What are you doing, following me?"
"I thought I was going to help you hide it."
"You're spying for Azula, aren't you?"
"Am not!" she denied, stung.
"You're her friend." His eyes had gone narrow again, dangerous and scared.
"I'm not gonna tell," she said sulkily. "Promise."
"You better not," he shot back, opening the door. He shoved aside some clothes to reveal a traveling trunk. Mai didn't remember the last time he had been away from the palace. A long time ago. Before his dad had become Firelord. Before General Iroh left for Ba Sing Se.
It was empty, and full of dust and spider-fly webs, and dead bugs. Mai wrinkled her nose. "She'll look here eventually."
But Zuko just scowled. His fingers scrabbled over the fine, dark red wood at the bottom. It tilted up, and he pushed it up against the side.
He glanced up at her, smiling triumphantly, and Mai knew what he wanted. "Whoa!"
"Yeah," he said, suddenly sheepish. "I guess it's kind of cool."
There were things in there already, drawings, a bone whistle, a theater mask, a school prize certificate he got for an astronomy contest. "Azula doesn't know about this?"
"Nah." He smiled. Mai wanted to smile too. He tucked the knife in among the rest, carefully replaced the false bottom, and closed the lid.
"I have knives too," she told him. It felt only fair, to give him a secret. She pulled up the leg of her pants, where she had hidden one. It was little, and she didn't know if he would be impressed, but she wanted him to be. She wanted him to keep smiling. She held it up. "I bought it with my allowance. My parents don't know I've got it. Or uh, the others. I've got three now. They'd take them away. They're for throwing. I've been practicing."
"That's really cool!" he told her earnestly. "I promise I won't tell."
She smiled at him, and he smiled back, and Mai felt like everything was just fine, like she didn't have to worry about anything.
