TRINBAGONIAN CHRONICLES

Episode 1.

So I have been on this goonie app for quite some time and I have beared witness to the shit-show it has become in some ways, but there’s still hope. With that being said, I just have to say that I have never come across much Trinbagonian cultural content and I’d like to change that. STARTING WITH OUR DIALECT (the who, what, where and why of Trinbagonian culture will come after).

Inspired by my own thoughts and actions sometimes, I felt the need to teach the general Tumblr public of a truly significant, comical and honestly, iconic way of saying stupid/dumb/senseless/head empty, no thought. And that is

D O T I S H (pronounced doh-tish).

Thank you for coming to my Ted-talk.

TRINBAGONIAN CHRONICLES

Episode 2.

SO.

When it comes to the West Indies, we have a particular flavour of music. From reggae to dancehall, our rhythm and beat are on point and when you hear it, you can’t help but gyrate them hips, man.

But you see Trinidad and Tobago? Home of the Steel pan? We have what is known as SOCA. For years upon years, the mixture of East Indian and West African heritage in our music created the love child that is Soca. And once you issa Trinbagonian, it have no stopping you from a jam session once that soca start.

Of course there is SO much more I could into that could fill up an entire museum, but today, I want to talk about a particular soca song that took the nation and turned it upside down circa 2010 because it was the BIRTH of our own dance.

I am talking about PALANCE. Created by the duo, JW and Blaze, it’s a play on the words partying, as it relates to the feteing we Trinibagonians are known to do very well, and balancing.

Once you hear that “1, 2, 3, 4! Palance!” You already know what it isss, you balance all your weight on foot and hop your whole body to one direction and then to the next foot and next direction. All while holding your Trinbagonian flag-rag and waving it up in the air.

I swear, after all this time, you play this song up in a party, the WHOLE CLUB ‘bout to be palancing from one end to the next.

Do yourself a favour and take a listen, if you don’t like it, that’s all right, but in the case you DO like it, well, look thing. You have a new reason to have a jam session. https://youtu.be/v7cnGiQ4ZTE
