I’ve been working on this post on and off for the last few months. I always intended to post it during Pride Month, and hey, here we are. I’ve got a lot going on in my life right now, so this might be the last book rec post for quite a while.

When possible, I’m linking to the Queer SFF Book Database since it has information on trigger warnings and links to reviews by queer readers. When not in the database of 6/15/20, I’ll be linking to Goodreads. Links are all below the cut.

Do not recommend cis authors on this post. This post is for centering trans and nonbinary authors. Please note that trans people write all sorts of stories and protagonists, and these books don’t automatically have trans or queer protagonists.

My master list of book rec posts is here, if you want to find more.

If you’re looking for a starting place on trans SFF, I strongly suggest the Transcendent anthology series as an overview. It’ll introduce you to a wide array of incredible stories from trans and nonbinary authors.

This list does not cover all of the amazing trans and nonbinary authors writing science fiction and fantasy! There are many more, and please feel free to suggest them here.

If you see any exclusionists or TERFs on this post, let me know without engaging and I will block them ASAP. I would prefer to keep this post a safe, positive place for trans readers.

I finished A Short History of Trans-Misogyny by Jules Gill-Peterson last night and I really liked it! I think more people should read it, there's a lot to learn from it.

I really enjoyed the analysis of transmisogyny in the book, and how the author ties history and context to it. I found the analysis of how colonialism, racism, and capitalism ties into transmisogyny especially good. I find the term "trans-feminized" to refer to groups that aren't trans women but experience transmisogyny particularly useful. The commentary on American queer history and how the gay and lesbian communities of the 1970's abandoned street queens, trans women, and drag queens was also very good. I also liked the discussion of the rise of the term transsexual, and how there was a particular whiteness and wealth associated with it, and how it was also tied to the respectibility politics of the time (the sentiment of essentially being "normal people" besides the queerness, and the desire for assimilation). This book took a lot of things I'd already known separately and tied them together in a really nice way.

I enjoyed it so much that I'm planning to pick up another of Jules Gill-Peterson's books, Histories of the Transgender Child, at some point soon. I've skimmed through a PDF of it and am interested in her thoughts on the history of intersex children and how that relates to the history of transgender children.

PLEASE buy books from trans and nonbinary authors!

It's really fucking sad to me that, like, 60% of the top selling transgender and transgender studies books on Amazon CA are anti-trans, fear mongering bullshit from TERFs, bitter conservative doctors who don't want to treat trans people, whiny cis male professors who all think that they're embattled like Jordan Peterson, and journalist who think that respecting a trans person's identity and pronouns is an attack on there free speech and beliefs.

It's fucking sad.

EDIT for some trans and nonbinary authors to check out:

Tobi Hill-Meyer

Alok Vaid-Menon

Ivan Coyote

Florence Ashley

Mia Violet

Maia Kobabe

Julia Serano

Sinclair Sexsmith

Laura Kate Dale

Georgina "Gigi" Kiersten

S. Bear Bergman

Mx. Nillin Lore

Orlando Silver

PLEASE people NEED to read Hell Followed With Us. Everyone needs to if they can. Religious, not religious, lgbt and allies. Its an important book that is fuled by the anger the author felt. It is a book written and wrought with sorrow and anger of loss and loss of what the author never was allowed. Even after reading the letter from the author I could have never expected the volume of anger and intrigue plastered and carved into the pages. Hell followed with us is a book about trans anger in all of its righteousness to the modern church. If the modern church continues to ingore the truth of what is around them, more books like these will fill their bookstores. No book burnings can stop that

I’m on my hands and knees guys read Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White I need to tell my insane ramblings to someone
