from what I know, it’s a common-ish opinion to hc Hugo as genderfluid, although I see him more on the pangender side ((AKA the Varigo fandom rising up to challenge Varian’s bisexuality))

I also really like your closeted Hugo opinion, tho. Hugo’s whole thing is that he uses confidence to hide his insecurities, and adding a controlling and manipulative mentor to that is **chef’s kiss** I’d also really like to see the learning curve and maybe him developing beyond any learnt homophobia from Donella

like, him trying to deny himself of his trans-ness and — if he’s born male in your theory — maybe even trying to force himself out of his love for Varian or just trying to survive by going ”ok I need to fulfill my daily all you think about are girls quota because that’s what other men do, rIGHT??” Hugo maybe even trying out more masculine things than what he’s comfortable with and believing that eVeRyOnE struggles with it. or maybe he simply tells himself he’s insane and melodramatic for being so unsettled in first place

him being born a female would also be an interesting headcanon, if I got the right message from the post. all the theories you could whittle out: how would Hugo transition from his deadname to Hugo? would he go straight to ”I’m a trans man” or try out different genders until he finds what’s best for him? would he come out of the closet the second he gets out of Donella’s toxic grip or would he still have some internalised transphobia that makes him perpetually fear the idea of living how he yearns to?

Ok, trans Hugo AND Varian. Varian is very much out as a trans man by the time of vat7k and Hugo is closeted. Hugo was not taught about any of this stuff so donella could keep a tighter control on him and I will die on this hill.

Either way, Hugo finds out Varian is trans and quietly goes "you can do that?" So Varian helps him explore his identity and when Hugo ends up betraying don, he has a moment of asserting his gender and name before going off to find Varian. Please add on, I wanna talk with someone about this

Varian’s initially disappointed until he realizes it shoots water, he spends the whole day terrorizing everyone with it.

it’s christmas in corona.

rapunzel gives varian a toy gun as a joke. varian gives rapunzel a real gun.

all is good.

Eugene sneaks it back to him, with a gun for himself in his hands.

They spend the next several days terrorizing the castle together, flying from rafters and spraying their targets before disappearing to find their next victim.

Strangely, Quirin remains - even with the all out war Eugene and Varian are starting - untouched by any of the water

He handed one of them blueprints and told them to “give it to the responsible person once they’re ready for it”

They spend the next ten minutes trying to figure out who Varian considers “the responsible one” until Varian sticks out his hand and says,” Alright, the responsible one needs it now.”

So, Mage Marked!Tangled/BaleFire!Alchemist AU??? Anybody??

Just me? Okay:

- Varian is a skin witch who only realizes he’s even mage-marked until he’s betrayed the crown. (I’m thinking Varian accidentally using skin witch magic, pausing, and then spending the next two days screaming his head off in a forest)

- He gets the nickname ‘The Bale Fire Alchemist’ for being one of the only people to EVER stop Bale Fire (think blue flames that can burn anything, even water and use souls to grow) without needing to take down the warlock that made them first

- Rapunzel doesn’t believe he’s a skin witch at first so she lets him show her using her own body. (He cuts off her breathing for like two seconds and she’s shook)

- The rest of the main gang start asking him to do weird stuff with his powers. (“Can you make it so my legs are stronger? I wanna be able to jump higher!” “Can you make ___ into a chimera?” “What if you used your powers to stun that deer for us?”)

- The main gang + Quirin are really the only people actively willing to touch him at any given time? Because a Skin witch’s work by touching a person and then they have like total control if they keep holding on??

- Swords And Fire isn’t a popular series but basically: Skin Witches are very rare and dangerous, on the level of Warlock dangerous. (Picture Vivomancy and Artifcers as the main two types of magic, then you have Warlocks who can control/manipulate a certain element like electricity, fire, bale fire, etc) On general level, they function like Vivomancers (plant magic users), but they can break the chains that keep Vivomancers only using their magic on plants and animals, not humans. (So while a Vivomancers can’t stop your heart with a touch, a Skin Witch could)

- His Mage Mark is a deep purple ring against his normal blue eyes.

- Varian made Ruddiger temporarily into a chimera, after he was done he was very scared Ruddiger would stay as one. (He didn’t.)

- along those lines, Lance once dared Varian to make him into a chimera. Varian refused and nearly had a breakdown after because he could barely change Ruddiger back without messing up the poor raccoon.

Varian: Ruddiger! Ruddiger!

Varian: *tired sigh*

Varian: Ppspspspspspsp

Ruddiger: FRIEND!

Varian: *removes Ruddiger from his lap so he can do something else*
