One of the first lessons Riddle learned while recovering from his Overblot was that rules can be ignored in case of emergencies, or you can exploit loopholes.
So, when NRC descended into chaos during another Halloween event (Crowley and the staff got possessed), requiring the first years to secretly leave the school and search for clues on Sage's Island, he gave Ace and Deuce a 500 page guide on how to leave campus and investigate without breaking a single rule, complete with explanations for why they were out past curfew ("The hedgehogs were sick so we went to buy medicine").
He also gave a PDF file to Ortho, in case they forgot something. But there was no need.
Ace and Deuce were just given a guide on how to break rules by RIDDLE. This was PROGRESS! They were so proud they memorized everything (and found better excuses than the hedgehogs being sick).

Possessed Crowley: So, I heard you left the school, perhaps you were looking for some artifacts?
Ace: Nah, we had to go buy some medicine. The hedgehogs were sick.
Crowley: You left school at 2 AM to get MEDICINE?!?! YOU BROKE CURFEW!
Deuce: Technically, no. To break curfew, we'd have to "be out of the dorm for no good reason while there's danger lurking about". We were out for a good reason, the hedgehogs needed us!
Ace: And there's no "danger" in your prestigious arcane school for us to worry about, right? So it's all redundant!
Deuce: And if there is some sort of threath lurking around, then we'd have to call the authorities as soon as possible! We don't want another overblot...
Crowley: But-
Adeuce, simultaneously: Moreover, the Queen of Hearts specifically declared that the wellbeing of all living beings in the dorm is of utmost importance, what kind of Card Soldiers would we be if we couldn't follow such a simple rule!!?
Crowley: ...
First years: ....
Everyone else: ....
Crowley: ....is this your doing, Mr. Rosehearts?
Riddle, extremely proud, but trying to look offended: Are you accusing me and my students of lying? The hedgehogs were sick, for your information!
Riddle, smirking: And Ace and Deuce didn't break a single rule, so YOU may want to calm down and drink your tea
