Voltron: vampire lance trying to enjoy his blood.
I have this one Voltron AU where Lance ends up turning into a vampire and now has to adjust to his new life.
Important note: when this lance gets his blood, he gets it by catching wild animals, and carefully siphoning their blood through an IV into thermoses to drink later. without harming the animals. This lance has a bit of an issue when it comes to feeding. He doesn’t like the idea of killing for blood.
Lance is sitting on the couch in the common area drinking a thermos of blood when Keith walks in and sits down next to him.
Keith: hay, what cha drinking?
Lance: … um… blood?
Keith: no, I mean WHAT are you drinking?
Lance: … again BLOOD!
Keith: what life form did that blood come from?
Lance: ah, why didn’t you just ask that in the first place?
Keith: just answer the question.
Lance looks down at his blood, turning it in his hand and shrugging.
Lance: hm, meh idk some alien animal we caught back on the last planet we visited.
Keith: what did it look like?
Lance: idk some kind of weird purple hippo-like animal.
At this Keith gasps in anger.
Keith: WTF MAN?! HOW COULD YOU?
Lance: dude what’s your problem? Why are you getting so bent out of shape for?
Keith: HIPPOS ARE MY FAVORITE ANIMAL!
Lance: ok? And?
Keith: YOUR EATING MY FAVORITE ANIMAL!
Lance: omg are you serious right now?
Just then shiro and the others walk in, hearing all the commotion.
Shiro: hay, I heard shouting, what’s going on in here?
Lance: Keith is throwing a fit because I’m drinking his favorite animal!
Keith: HES DRINKING ALIEN HIPPO BLOOD!
Shiro looks so confused right now.
Shiro: … huh?
Pidge: only you two could create drama out of nothing.
Hunk: I don’t see what the big deal is. Lance has to eat too. And it’s not like he actually killed the animal to get its blood.
lance: THANK YOU HUNK!
Keith: still how would you feel if he drank the blood of something you liked? What if he drank the mice’s blood?
Pidge: Keith, the mice aren’t even large enough to serve as an hors d’oeuvre.
Keith: what about kaltenecker?! What if lance ate her?!
Lance: I would never drink kaltenecker Keith!
Keith: and why not?
Lance: cause she is like family! I’d never feed on family! And seriously Keith, I can’t just decide not to feed on everyone’s favorite animal. If I did that then I wouldn’t be able to drink blood from anything period.
Keith: so your saying it doesn’t matter what animal it is, you’d eat it regardless?
Lance: ok let me stop you right there. I may drink animal blood but I do still have my standards. There ARE animals I won’t drink.
Hunk: like what?
Lance: I draw the line at bug-like, cute adorable and babies.
Then Keith mumbles.
Keith: I bet you’d eat a baby hippo.
Lance: NO KEITH I WOULD NOT!
Keith: just you wait lance, someday the universe will exact karma upon you for eating a hippo!
Lance: for the love of god Keith! First off, it’s not an actual hippo! It LOOKED LIKE A HIPPO! Second, I didn’t eat it! I just had it donate a few pints of its blood and it went on its merry way! STILL ALIVE AND VERY MUCH NOT EATEN!
Allura walks in.
Allura: paladins! Get your armor on. We have a diplomatic mission on the planet kolslac. The kolslacians wish to join the voltron coalition and are requesting an audience with us.
Lance gives a sigh of relief.
Lance: OH THANK GOD! Saved by the princess!
Shiro: all right team! Let suit up and go meet these kolslacian diplomats.
(Later planetside)
Lance stood frozen in horror at the sight that awaited team voltron on the planet kolslac. The kolslacians as it turned out were a race of purple bipedal hippo-like aliens.
Lance was mortified.
Lance: (whispers) you gotta be kidding me!
Hunk: (whispers) dude, are you ok?
Lance: (whispers back) no I am NOT ok! I’m surrounded by a race of alien hippo people! This is Keith’s fault! He wished this! He asked the universe to punish me for drinking alien hippo blood and now I’m in hippo hell!
Hunk: buddy calm down! I don’t think the universe is really punishing you.
Lance: oh are you really gonna tell me that after the insane conversation we had about drinking alien hippo blood, that us coming to a planet of actual alien hippo people is just some random coincidence?!
Hunk: …um.. ok I’ll admit that is one hell of a coincidence and it surprises the heck out of me too but still, I really don’t think you’re in any danger here. These guys don’t even know that you drank alien hippo blood. So I think you’re safe.
Lance: yeah unless some mullet goes and rats me out to his new alien hippo buddies.
Hunk: I don’t think Keith would do that.
Lance: you sure about that?!
Hunk: …um…
Hunk then turns to Keith and taps him on the shoulder.
Hunk: (whispers) Keith you wouldn’t tell these kolslacians about Lance drinking “you know what” would you?
Keith looks at hunk then turns his gaze towards Lance and give him the most evil grin.
Lance: I am so dead…😰
Fortunately, the alliance talks go over smoothly without incident and surprisingly Keith says nothing to the kolslacians in regards to lance drinking alien hippo blood. Everyone goes home happy. But Lance, the poor guy. He suffered through the entire thing freaking out about if the kolslacians will want to roast him on a stake or chase after him with alien versions of torches and pitchforks. Or maybe even a mob trampling him to death with their big hippo looking feet.
When it was all over and team voltron returns to the castleship, Lance gives a huge sigh of relief. But as soon as he sees Keith walking in, he turns to him and shouts…
Lance: I HOPE YOUR FREAKIN HAPPY NOW! I’M NEVER DRINKING ALIEN HIPPO BLOOD AGAIN!!!

It started out as a simple infiltration mission on board a galra science station. They get in, get the intel and get out. Easy peesy right?
They didn’t expect one of the lab experiments to stow away on the black lion…
Little idea: Pidge’s hair it’s getting long and needs to get it cut. Pidge and Allura head off to the hair department to go trim it and Lance joins them and Pidge starts to do his hair. Keith walks in on the little party and thinks Lance is really cute and is too stubborn to admit it or join them.
But it keeps nagging at him until he snaps and gets Lance to do his hair while everybody is sleeping.
Also first time drawing Allura. I made her eyes too…………….wrong.

"wait what!?" Allura stared, bewildered by her paladins.
"do you guys not get diseases?" Pidge asked, staring at her. Allura stuttered.
"we-well of course we do! But they're so rare and dangerous, outbreaks only happen every few thousand years!" Allura stated, making pidge rain an eyebrow.
"really? That's weird. We have thousands of disea-"
"thousands!?"
"-ses on Earth, but only a few are really classified as a plauge." Pidge declared.
"well, what cl-classifies as a plauge?" Allura asked, dumbfounded at how non-chalant pidge was
"oh, well, the most 'popular' or well known one is the black death, or bubonic plauge. It was cause by fleas that carried yersinia pestis. They would attach rats and mice, and then when the animal died, they would latch onto humans, evidentially spreading it all throughout the middle East." Pidge explained, leaving allura both shocked and confused.
"how did you know they had it?" She asked.
"oh, well it's called the bubonic plauge cause it would cause limphnodes to swell to sizes of what, chicken eggs?" Pidge pondered for a second. "I think that's it. Anyways, the limphnodes would swell, and other symptoms were fevers, chills, fatigue, headaches, and the grossest one, necrosis on fingers, toes, and noses." She stated.
"what's necrosis?" Allura asked, and pidge cringed.
"basically, necrosis is when the skin cells start..." She paused, thinking deeply. "Promise me you won't start screeching?" She looked at allura, who nodded I'm affirmation, curious as to why she needed to promise.
"okay. So basically, the skin cells start dying. You loose all feeling in them, and they start decaying completely, even if you're still alive." Allura looked horrified.
"WHAT THE-" she yelled, but pidge cut her off.
"yup. It's gross, but at least we can treat it now. When the black death happened, it killed a third of Europe. It got so bad that there were dead bodies just lying in the streets. There was no cure for it back then, and nobody knew what was causing it." Pidge said. "There are also less 'popular' ones than that one, like Taburculosis, which causes your skin to become pale, you're emaciated, and you cough up blood. Or Colera, a water faring disease which sucks up all the hydration in your system within 24 hours, leaving you so dehydrated you start dying very quickly, though it only occures when drinking extremely gross and dirty water-"

*Sorry if any of mine are popular. I don’t talk about my opinions with fandoms since they can be pretty toxic.*
Here are mine:
1. The Shiro clone idea was really bad.
I don't like this idea because the development "Shiro" went through between S3 & 6 did not affect the actual Shiro.
2. Voltron went downhill once Keith replaced Shiro as the leader.
I don't think it is Keith's fault for the show's quality depleting; this is a timeline of when quality decreased. But, I think Shiro was a way better leader than Keith since he has the experience and personality of one. Keith is more of a second-in-command, at least for me.
3. Allura and Lance should have never gotten together.
This ship was all over the place. First Lance had a huge unrequited crush on Allura, then he seemed to be moving on and she was in love with Lotor. The development was rushed near the end, and their chemistry was kind of awkward to me.
4. I wasn’t super upset about Allura’s death. Just the way it was written.
Allura never really connected with me. I really tried to like her as much as most of the main characters, but I couldn't feel it. Her death was sudden and lukewarm, especially the goodbye between her and the Voltron crew. There was this feeling of emptiness in this reunion. The circumstances of why she had to die was meh. It would've been better if the lions sacrificed themselves instead.
5. Klance is very overrated(still kind of ship it tho).
This ship was everywhere, and some Klance shippers I've seen were toxic which turned me off for a while. At first, I felt kind of pressured to like this ship since Klance shippers populated the fandom. Now, I genuinely enjoy the ship, though I wish other ships gained more attention.
6. Shiro’s second arm design was bad.
I loved his first arm and was super upset when the designers did a 180 on the second one. It was so clunky and distracting whenever it was in full view. The detached portion of it was really annoying too.
When it comes to robotic limbs, I want them to look natural with the body.
7. Having so many villains was not a great idea.
I've watched shows with a lot of villains and they mostly put me off since some of them were one-note and generic. I really didn't like when Lotor was the temporary villain; he could've been a great ally for the finale. Honerva was pretty rushed and boring; she would have been better if she was the main villain much longer than two seasons. Zarkon was probably the best one.
8. Compared to villains in general, Honerva wasn’t too bad.
Compared to a lot of villains (especially the minor ones), Honerva is okay. I don't think she was great though. She needed a lot more development and her redemption was so quick.
I didn’t have a lot to say since most of my strong opinions are about the last two seasons and I agree with most of the fans.

The potential of kuron (aka shiro's clone) being a LITERAL CHARACTER and can be rename as Ryou (old shiro's actual younger brother on then 80s show) and then have the duo be an adopted found family brothers is sad..
Like idk allura magic her way to find shiro another body thanks to a plot and BOOM two shiros
But it make more sense for shiro to be merged with kuron/ryou ig
But.. I deadass lowkey wished for kuron/ryou/clone shiro to be a character and be shiro's brother like the old show but idk
And then make him find his own identity thay makes him unique from shiro
Since it's canon that ryou have a love interest on the old show there's a literal potential of adding a character name Amue not just for the Ryou/Amue ship but also for ALLURA to have a long distance related or cousin, maybe one of her family survived and throughout the years new generation of that family keep appearing and BOOM amue so that's why their related or some shit
(Lol sorry for adding the Amue and allura distance relative thingy here even though it's supposed to be a Kuron/Ryou post)
(And also for him to be a potential REMAKE of a less bitchy version of shiro's younger brother.. Or just rename him as jiro, kuron, or something else i don't care as long as his a character)

Hey so how do you think the paladins would deal with a crush who is not an idiot and is an amazing friend, but they can’t read the room romantically at all. Completely have to be the one to confess or be kissed or straight up ask on a date. They literally just think someone is being nice or kind and blink cluelessly if someone mentions that was flirting and they’re like “What?!” Even when told, they still don’t pick up on someone’s hints. This kind of conversation probably happened with crush: “Oh yea, I know I’m clueless. Someone could slap me to tell me they liked me and I still wouldn’t get it”. If one of the paladins does slap or nudge crush right after this, crush is like “ow! What was that for?” And it doesn’t click for them what just happened?

You bruised his pride a little bit but he’s way more determined to get you to realize his feelings for you
But it’s super hard when you always think he’s being really nice to you😭😭
It gets to the point where the other paladins are making bets on how long it takes you before you realize Lance likes you
After some time he would definitely get frustrated with you and just blurt it out loud while on a mission or something
“I LIKE YOU Y/N! AND NOT IN A FRIEND WAY.”

Like you can’t believe you’re hearing this, nobody has like liked you before
While it flustered you that Lance always flirted with you, you thought it was cuz he was just practicing💔

I feel like Pidge thinks you’re aware of her attraction towards you with how flustered she gets when you hold her hand and how she stutters a little when you two are alone

It gets to a point where Pidge can’t function correctly whenever you’re around so she thinks confessing her feelings for you will make her feel better
So she gets help from hunk to set up this romantic confession date for you, just to be the nail in the coffin
While you think it’s for someone else when you arrive, Pidge reassures you that it’s all for you
It warms your heart knowing she spent her time doing this for you, seeing the small paper hearts strung around the room making you slightly blush
She’s way more confident in telling you her feelings, explaining everything, from how you make her nervous to her romantic interest in you
You get the message and bear hug her, explaining how you thought she was scared of you
You guys then eat the small sandwiches prepared for you by Hunk :DD

He doesn’t realize you don’t know his obvious crush on him
Hunk thinks he’s being super obvious with how he badly flirts with you, or makes you a spectacular meals compared to the others
Or how he always offers himself to be your partner during split missions, or even the way he looks at you with such a SOFT LOOK
LIKE THIS DUDE CANT BE MORE OBVIOUS WITH HIS CRUSH
But you don’t even notice😭😭😭😭
Shiro would offhandedly mention how sweet Hunks crush on you is and you’re like what😀 crush??
You’ve seen how nice Hunk is to other people for as long as you’ve known him, so you just think that’s what he’s doing with you
You never fail to let him know how much you appreciate everything he does for you tho
And he’s internally screaming at himself to make a move before you friendzone him one more time
After a push from Lance, Hunk has the courage to ask you out
But you just smile at him and say you guys can hang out whenever! A big smile and everything
And he’s about to take it, friend zone and all, until Lance glares at him from the distance
He has a lot of patience when he’s explaining what he really meant. So while you’re trying to wrap your head around how Hunk likes you, he’s just all red in the face
When it clicks in your head that omg hunk LIKES YOU
You immediately tell him that you like him too!!!! You just didn’t want to take his actions the wrong way 💔💔

He finds it cute at first when you don’t realize his subtle flirting
Until after some time he realizes you’re not getting any of his hints with his flirting💀
Like you’d be super close to him, always being there for him whenever he’s going through it
But you literally cannot see the signs of him liking you more than a friend😭
The lingering hand on your shoulder doesn’t ring a bell in your head at all
I feel like he mostly uses his words to try and nudge you to see his feelings for you
Says some shit like “im really glad to have you by my side, y/n. You really know me like no one else does :)”
And because he’s such a cool person, you can’t fathom someone like him having the slightest crush on you
So you just accept it as a platonic situation, ignoring the way your heart aches as you say “well that’s what friends are for😁”
I feel like Shiro would just take you aside and tell you straight up
While he does find it adorable on how oblivious you are to his attempts, my guy is actually starting to get nervous about you not liking him the same way
“You mean you like me? I like you too Shiro! You’re one of my best friends!”
“I like you more than just best friends though. I want to be more than just best friends.”
He would 100% tell you of all the times he tried making his move on you
And it makes you feel so BAD cuz this man has been trying for WEEKS to get you to notice LMAO

Allura
We all know Allura is a little nervous when it comes to relationships and being around people she likes
While she doesn’t exactly flirt with you, Allura pays special attention to you
She spends her time around you, she likes how warm and soft you make her feel
Allura give you small gifts and trinkets, each being accompanied with a small note on how it reminded her of you
She doesn’t do this with ANYONE, so it surprises her how you believe the somewhat romantic gesture is only a friendly gift
She stumbles across you when she hears you talking to Keith and Hunk saying “if someone liked me, I would NOT be able to tell. If someone flirts with me, I wouldn’t know until the next day. It just goes over my head :(“
So Alura makes it her goal to make bolder moves with you, as much as it makes her nervous
You definitely notice how she’s begun taking your hand in hers, complimenting you way more often.
You laugh it off as her being really friendly with you, despite Pidge telling you otherwise
“Allura’s obviously flirting with you.”
“Whaaatt? Nooo, she’s just naturally like that.”
“…are you joking rn?”
It would be out of the blue when Allura confesses her feelings
It surprises the HELL out of you when she takes your hands in hers and looks you straight in the eyes, saying everything she’s been feeling lately
You try to make sense of it, saying how you thought she was just being nice
Omg like she’s the ultimate flirty machine now that you know her feelings for you
You’re all embarrassed with how you acted like it was a normal thing for Allura to be as close as she was with you😭😭😭
While Allura is used to being straightforward with people, she doesn’t mind nudging you in the right direction at times when it comes to reading the room🙈🙈
may i request an Altean!reader (possibly fem) who is also a bodyguard? Im thinking about if King Alfor put them in a pod too to help protect Princess Allura once she came out. im mostly thinking of the princess x bodyguard trope 🤭 but the reader x other paladins are fine too! i can't exactly remember, but i don't think they trained them to fight at the garrison. I think it would be nice if reader helped them at the start with their stances and such.

You probably trained to be Allura’s guard specifically as you both grew up
So that means you were around each a lot as children and teens
I think reader might be a year or two older than Allura, so in a way you grew to be protective of the younger girl, naturally
She was always able to confide in you no matter what, whether it was about a problem that bothered her or complaining about her potential suitors
I think because y’all spent so much time together, a little crush might form between yall
But being her bodyguard, you knew you had a duty to uphold and couldn’t let silly feelings get in the way of that (much to her dismay)
You would always playfully roll your eyes whenever she tried using a pickup line on you
When you guys wake up from the pods, despite your drowsiness, you’re immediately at Allura’s side, pushing away the weird creature with round ears from her
Like your sword is drawn out and pointed to Lance, ready to attack if the group in front of you poses themselves as a threat
Yeah, the group decides that it’s best to take several steps away from you LMAO
You’re always by Allura’s side no matter what, the princess being your main priority
You’re kinda like her shadow, always standing guard, waiting for the unexpected
I think reader would begin falling hard for the Allura (much to her delight) when she saves her from a life or death situation
The whole point of being her bodyguard was to protect her, but seeing how she risked her own life to drag you to safety made your heart flutter
Like no one had ever done that for you😭
You were taught and trained to fight for yourself, trained to protect others
So Allura being the one protecting you led you down in a spiral
And it’s a QUICK spiral, may I add
You begin seeing the princess in a different light
The way not a single hair moves from its placement when she’s fighting, whether it be training or when out on a mission, entranced you
You admired the way she demanded attention with just her presence alone
And Allura notices these changes AHH
Like this girl is internally screaming when you gently take her hand when you’re trying to bring her away from any danger
I like to think Allura would be flirty with her bodyguard lowkey
They’re used to each other from the years of being together so this isn’t an odd occurrence
But things do change when you begin turning pink whenever she uses her dumb pickup lines
It’s gotten to a point where the princess was able to beat you in a duel for the first time when she randomly blurted one out
(You claimed that you were feeling a little sick that day lol)
Even despite the fun flirting and knowing looks shared between you two, you would still be hesitant to start an actual relationship with Allura
You have so much respect for the passed King Alfor that you want to continue being the bodyguard for his daughter
You feel like you might be betraying his trust if you start pursuing his daughter
Coran would tell you to go for though if you talk to him about it
He knew Alfor best, so hearing him say that the king would want you and Allura to be happy, you immediately go to the princess
You confess and she’s just jumping on you in pure joy cuz FINALLY
The rest is HISTORY as you guys finally pursue each other AHHH
You’re a much more gentler bodyguard, you’re less tense when out of the castle and honestly just enjoying every moment with Allura
Instead of protecting Allura, you both fight along side each other
The respect you guys have for the other is just so UGH!!! If Allura wants to fight her own battles, you watch from a close distance
Honestly you guys make each other better I can’t even
And because you’re less intense now that you’re with Allura, you treat the team with much more patience

After that, they take training very seriously LMAO
You taught Shiro and Keith how to fight efficiently when in close range, showing them fighting techniques that they could also use if they don’t have their weapons
You teach Hunk and Lance how to properly use their guns, showing them the right positions to hold their weapons as to not injure themselves
And with Pidge, you show her how to use her weapon in general because of how unique it is compared to the others weapons
They grow to become strong fighters, you may even shed a tear, happy you were able to help them
You’re still able to demolish them even after everything you all have been through though
Every now and then you guys hold a tournament to see whose the best fighter, you still winning most of the times
Except when you go against Lance for some reason, he’s a slippery one you need to keep an eye on💀
You grow to care for everyone in your own way, vowing to protect them when if it ever came down to it
Being Allura’s bodyguard is honestly a very rewarding duty
She appreciates everything you do and risk to keep her safe, and she promises to do the same for you

I don't think Lance should have swapped to the Red Lion.
TL;DR at the end.
Lance's connection to Blue was the first connection shown in the series, which makes it all the more meaningful, and it made no sense to the series own rules. Red is temperamental and difficult to control, which is why Keith was her paladin. I have defended Lance's piloting skills in a previous post, but he is not as good as Keith and does not suit the Red Lion. His affinity is water - as emphasised by the start of season 2. Red is aligned with water.
Plus, if he stayed in Blue he would have gotten a proper character arc by living by his own rules and standards and not in Keith's shadow. I know it was supposed to be symbolism - him accepting Keith as leader and not being selfish about it made him qualify as the right-hand man, but the others accepted him as well, despite ribbing Keith about it earlier.
If anyone should have gotten the role as the Red Paladin, it should have been Allura.
Allura as the Red Paladin would, not only make sense narratively, but would also seem right. Colour-wise, she's closer to Red's hue than Blue's, but honestly, I didn't really care about the colour match-up. What is important, is that it would seem like a much bigger deal than Lance accepting Keith as the leader. Lance hates Keith, but that's probably due to being constantly in his shadow and being compared to him, consistently reminded at the Garrison that he was only moved up because Keith was expelled.
Allura, however, has a deeper reason. (Lance's reason is still valid, btw, just not as big as Allura's). She hated Keith for a good portion of Season 2 because he is half-Galra. Obviously, to us, this is a shitty reason to hate someone. It's racism and the show doesn't handle this well. It doesn't handle a lot of stuff well, but whatever. She gives Keith the cold shoulder and Keith knows she hates him. He says so himself to Hunk and doesn't listen to his reassurances. Then again, Hunk was making jokes about something Keith was clearly sensitive about, so that may have had a hand in it too.
Now, I am not condoning her actions. She made Keith feel unwelcome in a team - a family - while he already has abandonment issues, (not that they knew that), and hated him for something he cannot control. Keith probably hated himself for being born. Both of them disregarded the fact that he is still a person with feeling and blood doesn't change that. Hunk too, as much as I love him, was also wrong in his 'Galra Keith' jokes, as if Keith was someone else entirely, when nothing changed apart from their knowledge.
However, what I am saying, is that Allura's reaction was, somewhat, believable and had a genuine reason - and a good one. The Galra Empire completely annihilated her species (as far as she's aware), betrayed the people she loved, and has monopolized entire planets and controlled them - forced them to work and even fight to the death for their entertainment. Apart from Ulaz, she hadn't a single good interaction with the Galra. One good person is not enough to change your opinion about entire races. I know people who are racist, proper racist, to their own race, no joke.
Allura's reaction was actually rather tame, especially compared to how extreme racism can be in the world, even now. She never rose a hand to Keith and kept it passive-aggressive. She gave him the cold shoulder and genuinely hated him, but she never hit him and she never deliberately sent him on a death mission. The Weblum mission was dangerous, but it was also a requirement and she didn't send him in alone. She may have refused to acknowledge his achievements, but she didn't blame him or accuse him of anything. It's likely that, when she saw him, all she saw was Galra. That being said, she wasn't a bad person, simply badly written. There are many people who hurt others for no reason - people who haven't been wronged in any way, but rate a community simply because they exist or they think they're lower than them or less human, which is wrong on so many levels. Allura, at least, had a good reason, though it should have been built on and written better.
In the end, Allura acknowledged her toxic attitude and apologised to Keith. This in and of itself does not make everything okay, but it's more than what Lance did, (virtually nothing except telling Keith that he has to be the leader). Allura knows she was wrong and sets out to make it right, and this development would have been solidified by her becoming the Red Paladin. Like, let's be honest. Lance does not treat Keith right and it's never explained why, in and outside of the show. He's the one antagonising Keith, even during their first proper meeting, and he's the only starting all the arguments, especially in season 2. Keith has been volatile too, I will admit, but he stops his behaviour in the second season. Lance is the one starting everything. Allura, however, stops her behaviour before it takes extreme lengths and becomes a better person and a better friend as a result. It's then that she calls Keith family for the first time, and becoming his right-hand would have shown how serious she was and how far they've come.
Seeing Allura, who, just the season prior, hated Keith's guts, accept Keith as her leader, the Black Paladin, become his right-hand, would have meant so much more. The symbolism goes even deeper. Red's first paladin was Altean and Black's was Galran. Need I say more? (No, but I will). Many of us were incredibly disappointed with the ending of Voltron, especially with Allura dying. The reason she died was to complete the circle, so to speak. The war against the Galra Empire truly started with the death of Allura's father, Alfor, and the entire species of Altea, and the war is finally ending with Allura and Honerva's death. That being said, it was just so insulting and pointless and nobody was happy. Instead of dying to complete the circle, Allura should have survived and broken the chain, for both herself and Red's own paladin tragedy. It was just a huge slap in the face for people who actually powered through seasons 7 and 8 and trusted the show to pull through and get its head together. I know that Shiro was supposed to get Black back, Keith goes back to Red and Allura controls the Atlas, but if that wasn't the plan, then Allura in Red would have made much more sense.
Additionally, the fight in that realm would have been more emotional if Allura was forced to fight her father and bring him back. Lance had no emotional attachment to Alfor, and I know that was the case with Hunk and Pidge, and Allura had attachment to all of the previous paladins, but still. Think about how heart wrenching it would have been for her to face her father, whom she loves dearly. he wouldn't have even recognised her and would have fought her with the intent to kill after his soul was trapped for 10,003 decapheobs/years. (I know they're different, but Allura says 10,000 years even when she didn't know what years were, so I didn't know if that was a mistake or not). Allura would not have been able to fight as well as she did against the Blue Paladin of Old.
Let's not forget that Allura was the one to convince Keith to take up the role of the Black Paladin. Of all the paladins, it was Allura who knew what to say; who knew why Keith was acting the way he was in season 3. Lance saw Shiro as his idol, Pidge as a legend, and Hunk as a mentor. Keith's relationship with Shiro is so much deeper than that. Shiro wasn't the youngest man to be sent into space. He wasn't someone to look up to. He didn't go to the Garrison because Shiro went there - he went there because Shiro convinced him. He doesn't see Takashi Shirogane, piloting prodigy, idol for all. He sees Takashi Shirogane, his best friend and brother, a man he can trust and how can trust him. Nobody else realises how deep this goes. Nobody but Allura. She's the only one to see how much Shiro meant to Keith. She's the one to call him 'irreplaceable' and she's the only one even by the end of the series, who isn't Keith, who has sacrificed something for him. Allura gave up her freedom for him by allowing herself to be captured, and then she gave up the crystal for his arm. Keith has saved Shiro many times, even his clone, and literally gave up his place in Voltron for Shiro. Allura trusts Keith and Keith allowed himself to trust her. She understands his pain when nobody else saw it.
Finally, Allura would have been inheriting Red from her father. Coran has explicitly said that Allura wanted to pilot Red due to her father piloting her. The Lions clearly have some amount of sentience, Red and Black especially. Black only opens themselves to Keith because he of Shiro. The first time, it's to save Shiro from death. The second, it's because Shiro wanted him to become the leader. Red only accepted Keith because he proved himself to her and has saved Keith many times while he's floating in space. She's described as temperamental, which suggest levels of sentience. Obviously, Red would have more of a soft spot for Allura, the daughter of her previous paladin, than she would for Lance, whom she only opens up to well into season 3 and is someone antagonised and even bullied Keith, her current/transitioning paladin. Allura also shows that she's fiercely loyal and is willing to give one up for the team.
Allura has sacrificed her only contact to her father, she has allowed herself to be kidnapped for Shiro, she has constantly exhausted herself for both her friends and strangers such as the Balmerans, she has given up the crystal in her crown for Shiro without hesitation, and she even dated Lance despite not showing any form of romantic attraction previously. (That last one was joke, obviously).
TL;DR - Lance has literally no reason to have become the Red Paladin outside of a rubbish character arc, and Allura has all the reasons. It would have marked an excellent character arc mid-point and would have set up a great ending, if handled well.
I have nothing but respect for the writers of Voltron for their work, especially after all the intervening of their higher-ups that caused many issues, especially regarding Shiro, Keith, Lance and Allura, who were all robbed of excellent character arcs. That doesn't mean I can't hate what came of it.
