A lot of people like to compare "Aperture Science vs. Black Mesa" but honestly I think they're more similar than different.

Both Aperture Science and Black Mesa messed around with science and new technologies, but for what reason? Honestly I don't think there is or was a reason. Cave Johnson famously said, "Science isn't about why, it's about why not." Wallace Breen abused his power as Earth's Administrator to satiate his own curiosities about what exists beyond human knowledge, and used that to try and coerce Eli Vance to his side.

I think the scientists of Aperture Science and their Black Mesa counterparts literally just did science for the hell of it. They were just secretly simple-minded people needing some sort of stimulus, but the pursuit of that stimulus is disguised as genius and invention.

Meanwhile, as protagonists, Chell and Gordon have to deal with the horrible consequences of the actions of those bored individuals with extreme power.

And isn't that really all of us?

Do you know what I thought? Gman in the first part is literally a combination of G from HL2 and Breen. He was the administrator of Black Mesa according to the original plan, and only then he was divided into two people. And I thought... what if the same explosion in Mesa was caused not by Gman, but by BREEN? Like, we actually don’t know when Breen appeared in HL1 and when G appeared, but! I can assume that perhaps some of the actions now attributed to Gman actually belong to Breen. Maybe.

For example, it seems to me that in the laboratories the administrator could talk to the scientists (the scientists literally say that they talked to him about the experiment, plus there is a text of the dialogue between them), that is, it was not Gman who was here, but Breen. Perhaps he was the one who caused the explosion in Mesa (but this is not a fact; both characters are equally possible). Why am I saying all this? I don’t know, perhaps we attribute too much mysticism and unnecessary facts to a character to which they do not apply only because Valve decided to divide one character into two, and leave one model in HL1.
