And Lupin fakes the pass, handing it off to Smith and—

“You think we’re going to win this week?” Sirius asked, now leaning forward onto his knees, knee bouncing up and down.

“I think we’re going to win every week.”

“Come on, even that first one?” Sirius asked, “That first one without James?”

“Gotta believe in something.”

“And you believed in…him? That was a whole…lotta faith, Dad.”

“I wasn’t wrong.”

“S’pose not,” Sirius grinned softly, looking back toward the television. Even from an aerial view, Fleamont knew Sirius was spending more time looking at one player than the games these days. Of the things Fleamont thought could happen, bringing Lupin off of the bench after James got hurt, this with Sirius, with his quiet, bitter, stubborn, bright oldest kid, was the last thing he would’ve guessed. Remus Lupin had become a fixture in their home just as quick as Lily Evan’s had all those years ago.

“And,” Remus flopped his hands back into his lap, “As someone who is pretty good at football…you can’t tell me it doesn’t feel good to be good. And if you do tell me that, I’ll call you a liar. I don’t even care if that’s rude.”

Sirius’s smile spread slow across his face, and he shook his head. “Well, damn, Lupin.”

“So you do know my name.”

“I know your name.”

Tuesday Snippet

(tagged by both @impishtubist and @pinklume so we had to do it. enjoy from chapter 7 of clear eyes, full hearts <3)

"I wouldn’t have had so much soda before we left if I knew we’d be drivin’ for so long…” Remus said, shifting a little in the passenger seat, wincing slightly as they went over a hump in the road.

“It’s only been about twenty minutes, you can’t hold it?”

“What can I say, the Lord had to give me some kinda flaw, and it chose a tiny bladder.”

“So you can’t hold it."

“I’ll do my best. Unless you happen to have a pee jar?”

Sirius nearly slammed on the brakes just so he could look at Remus properly with an appropriate amount of horror, but stopped short, “I’m sorry, a what?”

“Pee jar. Ya know, on long road trips ya bring an empty pickle jar or somethin’ and…” Remus paused, and Sirius knew he was blushing, even though the sky was dark and his eyes were on the road. “I-I-o-okay, n-nevermind, I was jokin’. Ha ha! Gotcha.”

“Sure, Liam…” Sirius laughed, and he saw a Remus leaned forward to bang his head against the dash out of his peripherals, “I don’t have a pee jar, but I think Reg left a jersey in the backseat—”

“I’m not peein’ on your brother's jersey!”

“Would probably smell better,” Sirius replied, the corner of his mouth tilting upward, and he winked at Remus, who was still crouched over, head resting on the dash. Though, he was looking at Sirius, cheek smushed just right one of his eyes was squinting, and his mouth was pulled taught on one side. There was not an ounce of grace in the way Remus moved, or eloquence in the way he spoke; openly talking about pee jars, stammering, and squished along the dashboard as Johnny Cash played through the speakers. And all Sirius wanted to do was pull over and kiss every imperfect inch of skin until he had uncovered every freckle, and jagged scar.

(another snippet because i promise i'll update eventually, i promise thank you for your patience!)

“E! Pick E, you fool!” Hope shouted and Remus looked over the counter to see her hands in the air in frustration, slippered feet up on the footstool and newspapers in her lap.

“It’s A Street Car Named Desire,” Remus said through the phone, “in case you were curious what puzzle she’s solvin’ for this guy…”

“Thanks for fillin’ me in,” Sirius voice said through the ear piece and Remus could practically hear the tilt of his quiet smile. “I’d be watchin’ with ya but the whole house would be listening in if I went to the living room.”

“Some other time. Mom’s been askin’ about you.”

“I hope she remembers me fondly.”

“Town loves their football, sure, but I’ll tell you, Remus, I care a lot more about the players than I do the game. And I think you’ll find there’s a handful of people out there tonight, win or lose, who are cheerin’ just for you. Not the Lions.”

His Mom.

Peter.

Dorcas.

Frank.

Dad, somewhere far away, looking down or up or all around. The grass under Remus’s shoes.

Sirius.

“You get it now?”

“Y-yes, sir. I get it.”

And it’s tipped! An interception and the Snakes have the ball!

Remus groaned loudly, inwardly kicking himself as he jogged over to Coach Potter on the sidelines as the Snakes called a timeout.

“You got this, Lupin?” Coach asked him gruffly, slapping him on the back of the helmet, water splattering everywhere, “You’re coming up short, you got to look over the line—”

“I-I can’t s-see anythin’, Coach.”

“You threw that first ball with your eyes closed, since when do you need to see?”

“…But we’ll be alright?” Regulus asked, letting out a breath at the same time so his vocal cords strained. Sirius’s face softened, abandoning whatever was so important by the closet and falling onto his back on the bed next to Regulus. Two Black Brothers staring up a popcorn ceiling, and a fan moving around and around and around. Blades swirling and curving.

“We’re always alright, aren’t we, Reg? No different this time.”

“I don’t think they got football in New York. Not like they do here.”

Sirius laughed softly, “Honey, I don’t think they got football anywhere like they do in Hogwarts.”
