Wilhelm Did You Do That - Tumblr Posts
Why do we assume that inaction would be the best strategy for the Royal Court?
I know the theory that Simon's lack of media training was due to the Court just hoping he would fail and give up is pretty popular, but it doesn't make sense to me.
Because active support from the Court could have been much worse.
Just think of the amount of changes they would have rushed to bring to Simon and his family. Yes, starting with making social media accounts private (probably just creating new ones, private from the start, instead of the old ones), teaching him how to deal with the press and how to behave with strangers. It wouldn't be a small moment where Simon follows Wilhelm last, but a whole conversation about how that's the way it supposed to be, that he should always be a couple steps behind his boyfriend/possible husband.
And using their relationship to grow in popularity among the youth? Oh, that would be interesting.
Because on the one hand, isn't that what Simon wanted? Even the mere fact that he would have been sent to pose in a photo with Wilhelm would have been enough to signal the community's support. Like Wilhelm said, it would have been a statement. It would have been a way to use his position to change things.
But at the same time, Simon could see that none of this was sincere. That he would have to be a walking advertisement for the royal family along with Wille, because everything good they do would be designed to attract as many people as possible to the monarchy.
And isn't that a more interesting conflict for his character? Isn't that a reason to talk about what their lives could be like if Simon had decided to pursue a relationship with the Crown Prince? Being always behind, obedient and charming? Constantly compromising, sacrificing his independence. Something Wilhelm is already doing that makes him suffer???
It would be a truly diabolical plan, but it would also be a real glimpse of what that future would be like. It's the actual reality of being royal what would make Simon seriously consider what exactly he was agreeing to.
You see, the plotline leading to Wilhelm's renounce could be much more complicated than that. Because even In this scenario, there is a place for Wilhelm to realize what was the real problem for him all along.
