✨💦 SHOWER MAGICK 💦✨

Many of us witches understand the beauty of taking a shower and cleansing our bodies and finding a time that is sacred and a time to relax. But there is more we can do than just the obvious cleansing.

image

🚿 Use shampoos and conditioners and soaps that have ingredients and scents with magickal properties in them to directly infuse your bodies witch its intended purpose

💧Better yet, create your own shampoos and soap as a way to know what is going in and to better put your intent in (there are many good and healthy recipes on Pinterest and YouTube)

🚿 Take this time to ground yourself. This works perfectly for morning showers if you know you are going to be doing magick later

💧Do glamour spells in the shower. Bless anything you are going to use before hand and do your spell work while you are there (just be careful not to slip, as always)

🚿 Devotion. Devote your shower to the god you are working with, especially if your god controls water or beauty (*cough cough* Aphrodite/Venus)

💧Or devote a song that you are singing in the shower to your god(s) of choice; they love to hear you sing, no matter if you think you are bad or not

🚿 You could try to do divination. Scry by seeing what you see in the suds and soap that wash down the drain or even scry in the steam in the mirror as it disappears after you are done showering. Be creative!

Be sure to share this if you like it and add your own tips and tricks if you have any! I’d love to hear what all you witches think!

Types Of Divination That Aren’t Tarot:

I’m tired of tarot cards and tarot readers everywhere…it’s awesome but there’s just too many of ya’ll. I just want my friends list to be more diverse. If I am gonna be honest, tarot isn’t most of your forte. Most of you just aren’t good at it. And further, you set yourself up for failure doing the job that 1000 other blitches are already doing and excelling at! But the good news is there are other options!

TYPES OF DIVINATION THAT AREN’T TAROT:

☕🍷Tasseomancy: Divination from tea leaves, coffee grounds, or wine sediment. Put that drinking or herb habit to good use!

🔮🍶🕯️ Scrying: Divination using a crystal ball (gastromancy), mirror/black mirror (catoptromancy), bowl of water (hydromancy) or other reflective surface. Can also use a flame or ashes from a spell (cineromancy/ceneromancy). Go get some full moon water and Git it.

📖 Stichomancy/Bibliomancy/Rhapsodomancy: Divination from sacred and spiritual texts. Yes, we have sacred and spiritual books that aren’t the Bible. Yes much of our oral tradition has been written down. No excuses.

✋🏾Chiromancy: Palmistry, divination through the study of the hand. There are hands all around you! You have two! Grab and go, fam, grab and go!

🌬️Capnomancy/Libanomancy: Divination through reading smoke. COME ON where my potheads at this isn’t hard. Where my cigar smokers, pipe smokers, roll a bleezy and let’s get to it!

💃🏾Pendulum Reading: Energy reading using an object or your body as the pendulum.

☠️ Osteomancy: Divination with bones, shells, and other parts of nature.

🗿💎Lithomancy: Divination with stones that have symbols drawn on them (runes, a popular British Isles practice but I’m down if you want to drawn indigenous symbols from your culture)

💰I Ching Divination: Utilizes coins and yarrow stalks. You should probably only bust out Chinese coins with holes if you are in some way Chinese FYI. But why not use coins from your hometown? We all have coins laying in the sofa cushions! We all have native twigs in the grass outside!

🏚️🔠 Spirit Boards: Divination with a talking board–the most commonly called a Ouija board. Used since Ancient times (China, Africa, Greece) and for much more than talking to demons. Like please just stop obsessing with the devil lmao.

⚕️Dowsing Rod: A spiritual stick used for fortelling and finding. I’ve seen a million crystal “wands” being sold by blitches, go get one and do this thing!

☁️🌨️Nephomancy: Divination of the clouds. They are beautiful. Best of all…they are free and you don’t have to store them. My husband just reminded me that an episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender was based on a woman who read the clouds ⛅

🌌✨Sortilege: Also called casting lots, ancient form of divination that is quite mysterious and open for interpretation. Found in the Bible 70+ times (most notably to throw Jonah to the whale) it involves taking a group of relevant objects and casting them for the truth. The objects can range from items to paper with words or symbols written on them. Typically all items are placed in a bag and you draw them out one at a time.

☀️🌅🌦️Heliomancy/Solaromancy : Divination of the rays and movement of the sun. We can all see the sun, really this one sounds easy. Why is none of you with Rah on your name jumped on this?

🌓🌔🌕 Selenomancy: Step 1, go outside and look at the moon. Step 2, ______. Step 3, profit. But for real ya’ll love the moon, go read her!

👨🏾👩🏿Physiognomy: Divination through facial reading. You seen faces before! Read them!

😪😴Narcomancy: Divination while sleeping /dreaming.

🌿🍃Phylomancy: Divination of leaves. Your divination pics will never look the same twice! Plus this is another free one!

🛣️Symbolomancy: Divination of things found on the road. I’d follow an IG of someone who did THAT in a meaningful way!

I hope this list inspires you to just jump in and try something new. Stop waiting for a teacher and just PRACTICE. The same way you all are doing with tarot. Feel bold and like you can practice something else…hell make up your own pieces and ways. Blaze a goddamn trail.

Signed,

Tahtahme

Tips for lazy witches

We all love our witchcraft but sometimes you’re just too tired to do some certain things so here is a list to help make a busy witches life a little easier.

• too exhausted to make a sigil? Go onto sigilscribe.me and it creates a perfect sigil for you all you need to do is charge it!

• if you wear glasses enchant them so when you wear them when your tired they will help your eyes more

• when casting a circle do it metaphorically instead of lying down crystals, stones, salt etc.

• use music lyrics if you are too tired to create a spell

• want to increase or decrease things? Stir tea clockwise (increase) anti-clockwise (decrease)

• enchant your bed on a good energy day so on a low energy day it may help

• make little pre-made ritual and spell kits/bags so when you need to preform something all your measured ingredients and supplies are already there

* Happy enchanting 🖤✨🌙

College witchcraft

It’s not easy because I don’t always have the energy. But I try to make the little things I do magical. So here are some of the things I do when I’m tired and low on energy:

•Doing shower spells with a homemade coconut sugar scrub.

•clearing out bad energy with an incense or just burning it because it relaxes me

•turning on my himalayan salt lamp and putting my hands above the soft glow of light

•crying because emotional blockages

•stretching to release pent up energy from my body that causes harmful tension to my muscles

•reading a poem and attaching a manifestation spell at the end

•cooking up food in my crockpot and stirring it like the delicious cauldron it is

•art: infusing color magic into your artwork

•meditation: which honestly is mostly me laying on the floor on my yoga mat with a few crystals of my choice because I got stressed out.

•talking to the moon 🌙 because she is beautiful and always there protecting me and supporting me.

It doesn’t have to be something big always. Just attach your own magical intentions and go with the flow.☀️

There are different types of deity work

I keep seeing debates about whether or not deity work is dangerous that approach the subject as if there is one level of deity work. Frankly, this is causing confusion and concern in classes and rituals that involve deities. There are different types and levels of deity work. I can’t hope to capture them all in a tumblr post but here’s a start.

Honoring / acknowledging a deity - this can be as simple as leaving an offering at a shrine, setting up your own small shrine or just being present when someone else calls on a deity. This often how people begin deity work. It is entirely safe for beginners and can even be politely done just to acknowledge someone else’s deity.

Deity work in ritual, either your own or a group ritual - a good example is Wiccan sabbats. Deities are typically called on during these and work down with those deities within the ritual itself. These rituals usually have a distinct beginning and ending point to say “now we’re working with the gods. and now we’ve stopped.” There should be no danger from deities in a well led ritual. There can be some leakage in a poorly run circle, but if you aren’t calling the deities yourself, that will generally dissipate once you leave.

Deities in meditation journeys - guided meditations to meet deities are popular. You may encounter deities you are unfamiliar with, don’t work with or who can even be a bit frightening. A good guided meditation will include a part to farewell and leave the deity. However, these meditations can be dangerous if this process of meditation is not healthy for you. Not because the deity is dangerous but because the person struggles with the process.

Patron deities - this is a commitment to do the work of a certain deity. It’s not dangerous as much as it can be demanding. It is generally not undertaken until you’ve spend several years doing the above working. It can involve life-altering changes.

Channeling deities - this is when a person calls a deity into themselves, usually in a ritual setting. Now this can be dangerous. it should only be done in situation where there is a priest/priestess or leader who knows how to help bring the person out of a channeling session. People who struggle with mental health issues should consider carefully and perhaps talk with a therapist before doing this. There are some traditions where this is a regular part of ceremony and others where this is seldom or never done. It is a technique to be approached carefully.

Hello! Do you have resources on beginning witchcraft? I'm latinx and my grandma practiced brujeria, but I'm no longer in contact with her.

I AM SO SORRY, I DID NOT REALIZE THIS WAS SITTING IN MY ASKBOX STILL!! Please forgive me T_T

Okay, so I'm going to recommend you handle this two headed beast from both sides: 1, general accessible witchcraft, and 2, connecting to an ancestral practice.

Firstly, and foremost, I do have a post on what I recommend for newbies, as found in my larger research post. Hint hint: it always starts with a trip to the library. It's only even a little bit outdated too. (Goodbye, Witchvox!)

It is easier now than ever to find a path to a spiritually-driven path forged of your own hands and research. Of course, not all sources are equal, but still, there is treasure in trash and fool's gold in glittering mines. My two recommended books to start are @orriculum's Witchcraft and Whimsy, and then later, after a time settling into a routine, @breelandwalker's Grovedaughter Witchery. I have wondered if I wanted to change these recommendations up a bunch of times, but they consistently are the only two books that I know of that are not only beginner/seeker friendly, but have a very sturdy stance against cultural appropriation. The books are also in a very reasonable price range and available on Amazon. If you're looking for something free, I recommend not only the dubiously illustrious witchblr blogs at the bottom of this linked post but also Bree NicGarran's Free Books post! Hope you like Middle English!

(ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

Secondly, however, comes connecting to a culture you're not presently in the domain of, and that is a completely separate pickle to juice. Presuming the metaphor here is the pickle juice. Anyway. You got two options. I suggest taking them both because only one leads to an imbalance of the sort of information you find...you’ll see what I mean.

Social media is a help and a hindrance, but there are likely brujería social media accounts and instagrams and facebook groups and all the like just like there are for other groups of diasporic practitioners looking to connect with each other. Some networking and speaking to lots of people, checking out the appropriate tags etc. will net you people to follow online. Other humans will be invaluable in this scenario. Not everything in a practice is written down. Culture is passed from hand to mouth to hand to hand to mouth... It won’t all be in a book. Network. Reach out. Unfortunately I personally do not know too much about brujería (being non-latine), but you can probably get a boost from @witches-ofcolor if you ask nicely. Visibility is what it is.

But BOOKS! Books are good for you too! If you know the approximate location where your grandmother grew up, you can look up books on her local superstitions and culture. Anthropology and sociology books will be your bestest friends in the whole world. This post goes into the process more effectively, but basically, you’re going to want to avoid more contemporary “witchcraft” books and focus more on nonfiction aimed at a more academic crowd. It’s good to have practitioner’s voices, sure, but there’s a kind of...sameification that can happen if you’re in the general witchcraft crowd sometimes. It’s not amazing.

Other than that...yeah. I’ve had Mesa Blanca by Florencio Guevara recommended to me as well as Luz y Progreso by Sancista Brujo Luis, both books that...I believe were in English when they were recommended to me? But Mesa Blanca has some bizarrely racist stuff in it that I was not expecting at ALL which made me majorly suspicious about the perspective of the author. I never read the other. Anyway. I want to emphasize that you have a lot of opportunities available to you, and a lot of places to look towards. Don’t worry. You’ll make it somewhere as long as you keep walking.

I hope this finds you well! Sorry it took me so long, but once you open the ask to see it the notification goes away, and I knew this needed a really thorough answer...yadda yadda. Before I knew it this ask was new to me again.

Best of luck on your journey, and my blessings!

tips from the merciful haha

Types Of Water Divination
Types Of Water Divination
Types Of Water Divination
Types Of Water Divination
Types Of Water Divination

Types of Water Divination

Hydromancy: divination using water

The flow of water speaks to the intensity of current and/or upcoming events. To practice this method, dip a metal ring in water and gauge the movements like using a pendulum for "yes/no," or interpret the answer from the number of ripples that arise.

Acultomancy: divination with needles

Using needles in water or flour, the diviner would interpret shapes and patterns created by the needles in the substance. 21 or 7 needles would be used following the question being asked. The broken line may mean traveling or heading on a new journey. The parallel lines may mean money in the future, either given or taken away. The vertical lines are meant as guided roads to take. The horizontal lines may mean what the fate will be.

Ceroscopy: divination with molten wax in water

Light the candle with your question in mind and allow the wax to drop into the bowl of water. As the wax forms shapes and pattens, use these to interpret an answer to your question.

Quercusmancy: divination with acorns and oak trees

Lovers can drop acorns into the corner of a body of water. If the acorns touch, the lovers are meant to be. Acorns were also carried as lucky charms. If an oak tree shed its leaves, an oath was said to be broken.

Lecanomancy: divination with oil and water

Drop oil or rocks into a bowl of water and interpret the shapes and ripples in answer to your question.

🌟 Elemental Witch Starter Kits 🌟

Call it a week or so ago, but @lunaesteria did a fun game where she evaluated starter kits so I wanted to do Starter Kits that were Elemental-inspired only! Keep in mind this is only meant to be a guide as to the kind of things you should get on your elemental journey.

Note: Spirit is not included here only because Spirit encompasses so many things about the elements and is seen as having properties of all of the elements. There isn’t one finite tool that can be tied to Spirit because Spirit is an infinite, universal force.

Earth:

A collection of common herbs (ones that you may find at the supermarket) such as sage, chamomile, paprika, cinnamon, anise, etc. My specific recommendations are sage, cinnamon, anise & star anise, and chamomile! Keep a lookout if your local supermarket is having sales on certain herbs as well! It’s better to get the common bottles you see rather than going to get, for example, sprigs of thyme in a pack. You want your herbs to last you through spellwork.

Clear quartz. Always a great stone to start off with, regardless if it’s common or not. It has wonderful properties such as amplification. You can program a clear quartz stone with your intent for a variety of purposes.

Mortar & Pestle. A common tool for crushing up herbs and similar. Many use it for the same purpose and it wouldn’t be hard to find one in your local pharmacy or even online. Even stores centered towards wellbeing and natural remedies may have it. You can use it for a variety of uses in relation to making herbal pouches, salts with magical properties and so much more. A great addition to the kitchen if you’re looking to be a Kitchen Witch– but make sure you’re just using your mortar and pestle to crush certain herbs and you’re cleaning it between uses. Although I myself have a wooden mortar and pestle, I would recommend a marble one as it seems easier to clean.

Table Salt/Sea Salt. The easiest to acquire and while this may also fall under Water as well, it is Earth-centered. Salt’s common use is protection but you can do so much more than that with salt. Take the ashes of incense that you’ve burned or anything else you’ve burned and mix it with sea salt to make black salt, which can be used for baneful magick depending on what your intent is. You can also mix it with other herbs as well. It can be used in spell jars, sachets and more– and you can even make your own bath salt as well for magickal baths.

Air/Wind:

Feathers. You can safely acquire feathers in a way you are not harming birds alike by simply doing a search whilst outside, or if you cannot do that then you may find authentic ones online. Feathers are a great way to represent the Air element! Even if you have to resort to craft feathers, you can always enchant them as well!

Wind Chime. Wind chimes are beautiful and carry out an amazing sound when the wind blows it. Wind chimes can also be used to cleanse an area! This is because of using sound to cleanse the area. With proper structure and intent, you can hold a wind chime and cleanse an area. This is great before beginning to cast a circle or do a full-length spell.

Incense. While only applicable to those that can burn incense– if you know you can burn incense, and you know it won’t harm you, then invest in it! Many pharmacies or stores suited to natural wellness sell them for cheap, and you can find them online as well. My recommendations? Dragon’s Blood (protection), Frankincense/Sandalwood (protection against malevolent energies, psychic work– and a combination of these two are said to be very powerful), Patchouli (money matters), and lavender (for relaxation). Incense can also yield an association to fire.

Fire:

Tealights & Matches. You want to start off small so tealights are the way to go. For short spells or non-ritualistic spells, start with tealights. You can usually find a pack of ten– and I can’t stress this enough: get white tealights! They can be used as substitution for any color and has it’s own properties as well! If you need a certain color but can’t find it, take a white tealight, take it out of the metal encasing and carve the name of the color on the side or bottom. Matches of course, to light the tealights.

*Please be careful when lighting anything! Do so in your sight and away from anything flammable!

Fireproof Bowl. For the spells that require you to burn paper or non-toxic herbs, a fireproof bowl is the way to go and is a wonderful addition to any elemental witch’s tools.

Water:

Florida Water.  Florida Water… isn’t a common tool that’s used. I barely see any posts about it on here but I love the stuff, damn it. It was a common toiletry because of it’s scent and you can find it in store (pharmacy, etc) or online. Chances are if you’re at a 99 cent store they’ll have it, or definitely at a pharmacy. What does Florida Water do? While having a wonderful scent, it can also increase spiritual vibrations in an area, drown out malevolent energy and welcome benevolent ones. You can also wipe down an altar or other space with Florida Water to cleanse it.

Rain Water. Collect that rainwater during a storm or just when it rains in general. Rainwater has a variety of uses in your practice, varying from protection to baneful magick. Though this is a snippet of what it can do, there are other handy references that can help you.

Sun/Moon Water. The most common to collect– or charge, rather. Usually, I take clean water (that is, distilled or boiled water that I’ve let cool), place it in a jar, and let it charge overnight for moon water, or during the day for sun water. Both can be used in potion making (which is why it’s important that it is clean water you use, or in spell work. Try collecting moon water during the moon’s different phases for moon water that has properties in relation to that current moon phase!

dorm friendly magick for broom-closeted student witches

image

Got roommates that aren’t into witchcraft/magick? Can’t burn incense in your dorm room? Don’t have time for elaborate rituals between studying for exams and writing papers? I’ve been there. Here are some of my favorite undercover spells and rituals for witches living that college life.

Journal Magick

Dorm Friendly Magick For Broom-closeted Student Witches

Keep a manifestation journal! Find a journal that really speaks to you and makes you feel good every time you open it, whether it’s a bulky leatherbound tome or has a holographic cover and hot pink pages – what matters is that you feel a connection to it.

Every morning, write down the things you want to manifest in your journal in the present tense, as if they had already happened. [Note: this works better if you are writing the same thing every day for at least a few weeks. Consistent intent is key!]

For more information on this type of manifestation, just search “scripting” on YouTube and you’ll find approximately 642934 videos on the subject.

This is a really great technique for closet witches, because no one is going to be suspicious of you writing in a notebook – plus, it’s normal for people to want to keep their journals private.

Work with correspondences just like you would for a normal spell! You can print out photos of herbs, crystals, tarot cards, astrological signs, or moon phases that correspond to your intention and glue them into your journal (or draw them, if you have artistic talent). You could even get an essential oil that matches your intention and dab a drop of it on the page. You’re essentially creating an altar dedicated to your intention, just on paper instead of in a physical altar space.

Tap into the magick of color by writing your intentions with a pen in a corresponding color (green = abundance/wealth, pink = love and friendship, yellow = academic success, etc.).

Tea and Coffee Magick

Dorm Friendly Magick For Broom-closeted Student Witches

Tea and coffee are already essentially potions, and no one is going to think twice about a college student drinking a lot of coffee/tea.

Coffee is associated with grounding and protection, and it adds energy to any spell it is added to. Black tea is associated with protection, courage, and abundance. Green and white tea have their own, slightly different magickal uses. Based on these correspondences, you can use coffee and tea as a base for undercover potions!

For mental clarity and memory retention, brew a mixture of black coffee, lion’s mane, chaga, and ginger. For a caffeine-free alternative, brew an herbal tea with rosemary and peppermint.

To cleanse negative energy and release stress, brew a mixture of black coffee, Ashwagandha, cinnamon, tulsi or basil, and Eleuthero. This is based on a Four Sigmatic blend, lmao.

For a sneaky prosperity spell, brew a mixture of black coffee, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and vanilla. Yes, that is essentially pumpkin pie spice, and yes, you can use a pre-mixed pumpkin pie blend instead of buying the individual spices.

I could go on, but you get the idea. You can customize your morning beverage to suit any magickal or spiritual need.

Most plants have medicinal uses that are the same or similar to their magickal uses. So if anyone asks, tell them you’re adding these extra herbs for their nutritional and/or medicinal value.

You can also charge your tea or coffee with crystals. Just set a small crystal associated with your intention (amethyst for mental clarity, black tourmaline for protection, citrine for prosperity, etc.) next to the mug for a few minutes, or place it on top of your coffee maker. Be sure to charge both the crystal and the drink with your intention!

Candle Magick

Dorm Friendly Magick For Broom-closeted Student Witches

If your dorm lets you have candles then congrats, because candle spells are both super powerful and a super easy way to hide your magick in plain sight.

Find a candle in a scent and color that match your intention. For example, you could use a pink, rose-scented candle for a love spell.

You can find custom spell candles made by witches for witches on Amazon and Etsy, and these have the added bonus of having been specifically created for magickal use. Some of the businesses I’ve personally had good experiences with are Art of the Root (available on Amazon), Esoteric Arts (available on Etsy), and Crystal Journey (Amazon).

That being said, I’ve gotten good results with $1.99 scented candles from Walmart, so please don’t feel like you need to spend a fortune on special candles for your spell to be successful.

In a pinch, an unscented white candle can be used for any intention. You can get these at the dollar store, and it’s never a bad idea to have a few on hand.

Oil Magick

Your dorm has a no-open-flames rule, so candles and incense are out of the question. No problem – you can get similar results with essential oils.

An essential oil literally contains the concentrated essence of a plant. Magickally speaking, this makes them a powerful way to add some oomph to your spells. They’re also commonly used for aromatherapy, so your roommate probably won’t be phased by you diffusing them in your dorm.

You can create custom EO blends the same way you would create an incense blend, by combining different plants based on their correspondences. You can also buy pre-mixed blends online if you’re feeling lazy or if you have a certain blend you know you’re going to use a lot like, say, a focus-enhancing blend for studying.

Another option, and one that’s more traditionally witchy, is to use magickal oils/ritual oils. A magickal oil is an oil that has been created for a specific magickal purpose – it’s like a spell in a bottle. A ritual oil is created for a specific use in magickal ritual. You can find tons of different ways to incorporate these oils into your daily life for some very subtle witchcraft.

You can create your own magickal oils by combining herbs, essential oils, and crystals that match your intention, or you can buy magickal oil blends from witch-owned businesses. Art of the Root has my absolute favorite oils – I have like six different blends, and they’re all ridiculously powerful.

Some ways you can use magickal oils: 1.) wear them as a body oil, 2.) diffuse them like you would an essential oil blend, 3.) use them to anoint and bless objects, like tests or study guides, 4.) add them to spiritual baths, and a million more. [Note: many magickal oils come with real herbs and resins in the bottle. These chunky bits could damage a diffuser, so do keep that in mind.]

Personally, I wear magickal oils on a daily basis in the place of perfume, since most of the ones I own smell really good. As I apply them, I say a small incantation to power them up. For example, if I’m wearing an attraction oil, when I put it on I’ll say something like, “I am powerfully attractive to the people and things that will improve my life.” Which oil I choose to wear depends on the day and the area of my life where I want some extra help.

Tech Magick

The nice thing about being a witch in the 21st century is that, if all else fails, you can keep your entire magickal practice contained on your laptop and/or phone. And even if you’re not doing 100% of your witchcraft in a virtual space, you can still use your technology as a tool in your practice.

Pinterest is the ultimate visualization tool. You can create a virtual altar to a deity or spirit guide by dedicating a Pinterest board to them, or create vision boards for the things you want to manifest, or create a brainstorming space to plan your full moon rituals… the possibilities are endless.

Keep your Book of Shadows and/or manifestation journal in a Word document. If you’re really concerned about privacy, you can even password protect these documents. Another pro of an electronic Book of Shadows is that most word processors have a “search” function that lets you look things up more easily.

Make a devotional playlist for a deity or spirit guide. Making Spotify playlists for my deities is one of my favorite devotional acts! I’ll put together all of the songs that remind me of that deity, and I can listen to it anytime, anywhere to instantly connect with them. And don’t be afraid to ask your deities what type of music they like – you may be surprised by the answer!

If any other witches have similar tips, feel free to add onto this! This is just stuff that I’ve found works for me, but magick is deeply personal and everyone will do things a little bit differently.

And not to shove my content in everyone’s faces, but I did just post a spell to enchant your school notebooks on my YouTube channel, so check that out if you’re interested!

📚Some Things To Do As A Student Witch📚

Rather than being angry and harboring negative energy over gatekeeping and exclusion in witchcraft, I have decided to make a list of things that you can likely do as a student witch in college, along with some things to maybe stay away from (if you so choose; these are mere suggestions to follow only if you’re feeling extra secretive like me). These also could help a closeted witch who lives with strict parents, judgmental roommates, or in otherwise restrictive housing.

*DISCLAIMER*: these may not all apply, and I’m not an expert! I hope they work for you, but everyone’s situation is different. If you have suggestions, or if I’ve said something inaccurate, please let me know! 💖

Potpourris, and essential oils are excellent for dispersing aromas and energies

Wax melts are a perfectly good substitute for candles when you’re not allowed to have open flames. If you can’t have hot plates, battery candles can work in a pinch, but are less effective and should be supplemented with other methods of charging and powering spells and rituals

Setting out plants is ALWAYS a good thing, and since being cottagecore is trendy it’s super common and not sus at ALL

Get a cheapo lockbox for tarot cards, crystals, dice (for divination!), a mini notepad grimoire, and other small items

SPEAKING OF COTTAGECORE If you have access to a kitchen with an oven, take up baking as a kitchen witch activity. There are tons of recipes here on tumblr!

Find a private place outside if possible, or a quiet, typically unoccupied study space to perform rituals, readings, or other witchy activities! (Bonus points if your outdoor space is near nature!)

Stir intentions into your tea, coffee, or other drink of choice

Many things are still easy to do, such as sigils and meditation!

Since you probably don’t have a bath, consider using bar soaps or scrubs with natural ingredients that you would use in a ritual bath, like rose petals or salts.

Most of all, do not do anything you’re not comfortable doing, especially if you believe it might put you or others at risk. You’re still a real witch, even if you stay away from divination or candles or putting up sigils or smoke cleanses. I promise, you’re still a valid witch.

As always, be extra careful when dealing with open flames, and it might be best to just avoid them completely. It’s not just a “follow the rules” thing, you could potentially set off fire safety mechanisms in the building. Some buildings have sprinkler systems that can’t be turned off, which could cause tons of damage to your dorm-mates’ things. That’s not even considering the fact that it could set off an unnecessary call to emergency services. These are extreme examples, and can probably be avoided with some trickery, but if you’re inexperienced I’d just advise you to stay away.

Be conscious of your roommate(s), and what may make them uncomfortable. If you feel safe doing so, open up a dialogue with them about what they’d prefer to stay outside the room. Ask before using a diffuser, warn them if you plan on using candles or other open flames, and be considerate of imagery or items that they aren’t comfortable with. Keep in mind that when you’re living with someone, they have wants and needs too. If you want them to be open and considerate for you, allow them the same courtesy.

If you don’t want to, or for any reason feel you cannot talk about your practice with your roommate(s), then your best bet is to find another place to do your spells/rituals/readings/etc. If your dorm is not a safe space for your craft, then find somewhere that is safe.

Be aware of anything that might look suspicious, like ceremonial blades, herbs, or unpackaged teas. This sounds a little ridiculous, but my friend gave me a going-away gift of tea wrapped in plastic wrap, and I’m sure it doesn’t take much thinking to figure out what that looks like. Depending on rules about dorm searching at your school or on the openness of your roommates (as discussed above), these could get you in some trouble.

I hope these are helpful and inspiring to you!! If you have anything to add, please feel free to do so, because I’m always looking to learn from others. Be kind, be strong, be safe, and be happy! 💖✨🌸🥰

Living Magically With Roommates

I received a lot of requests for tips on being a witch/practicing witchcraft with roommates. I’m fairly lucky, because this is the first year in 4 years that I’m living without a roommate, but I know how difficult things can be.

This is a post specifically for closeted witches/witches who don’t feel comfortable talking to their roommate about their practice yet. If there’s a lot of interest in tips for bringing this up to your roommates, I’ll do one for that.

Tip #1: Intent is Everything

No matter where you are, you have the ability to practice. As a witch, you are magical. Our body is made up of the elements and the energy of the universe. A whispered word of intent is all you need.

Tip #2: Be a Walmart Witch

What I mean by “Walmart witch” is use things that don’t look “witchy” in your craft. Use herbs from the store in spells, cleaned out sauce jars, candles from the dollar store, beads or rocks. When I’m home, I use regular playing cards in place of tarot cards. I can carry pocket altars in altoid tins or charm my keys and necklaces for pendulums or talismans. Because intent matters the most, things don’t have to look fancy to be powerful. Get creative!

Tip #3: Sigils!

Sigils are your friend. They can be put anywhere. On your skin, underneath posters, painted with saltwater on doors for protection, in your shoes, the corners of notebooks. If your roommates ask? They’re doodles, plain and simple.

Tip #4: Meditation and Music

Meditation is a great way to practice magic. With a pair of headphones, you can find tons of guided spells/practices on YouTube to listen to, not to mention a lot of witchy music. Your roommates will likely not bother you while you’re meditating, or at least they shouldn’t.

Tip #5: Kitchen spells!

Kitchen witchery is awesome for dorm/tiny apartment witches. Even making coffee can be a magical event. Add various spices to meals for different intents, stir clockwise or counterclockwise for summoning and banishing spells. Plus, it’s hard for your roommates to be suspicious if you’re sharing your delicious food.

Tip #6: Bath magic!

Unless you and your roommates have a very unique arrangement, you likely have at least a few minutes of alone time when you take a shower/bath. Use bath bombs or shower scrubs with intent, draw sigils on the walls and let the hot water charge them, do cleansing and grounding spells. 100% discreet, and a great way to treat yo’ self.

If you have any other tips for discreet witches with roommates, feel free to add them here! I hope this helps you continue to live magically.

Many blessings! - Kate
