Brilliance for Beginners
GRRR i have been sitting on my ass thinking "yeah i gotta post worldbuilding info sometime so people on tumblr actually know what's going on" but have shied away from it because i dont have any good drawings to accompany it. well today i cracked and shared abunch of it in my server so i guess i should put it here too
ok Brilliance basics:
brillians are a humanoid species very similar to bacteria. they have very high genetic diversity & are not native to the planet they live on
brillians are adept at genetic and molecular engineering, they are able to manufacture all their materials food etc just through specially-created organisms & can edit their own genome fairly easily
the planet brilliance is an ice giant like uranus or neptune, instead of a clearly visible ocean the planet has a gradient of molecules that gets more dense the closer you are to the core. a supercritical "sea"
2 orbital rings were built on brilliance, one (Outer Halo) holds most of the actual weapon & the other (Inner Halo) holds living spaces & equipment for communicating with the outer halo
by the "present day" a large amount of time has passed & the haloes have been dysfunctional and falling apart for a long while now, the outer halo having wacky laser beam malfunctions ("lightfolding" phenomenon is caused by it) and the inner halo having chunks break off & either fall towards the core or getting repaired/maintained by brillians to form aircities

most brillians live in some air municipality, city state, or nomadic faction. some are solitary or operate on their own little airship crews. huge variety of currency, bartering/exchange of favors is very common smaller networks of communication, they can overlap to allow communication with more distant places. often nomadic factions do mail/delivery jobs to get extra stuff, since they are more experienced and happier with traveling groups of brillians generally have no need to fight over resources, as they are easily generated by widely available devices. conflicts are more likely to start due to personal slights or grudges, or an interest in aquiring wider territory (but most brillians know this wouldn't go over well) there is a worldwide understanding that if the species descends into constant fighting and conflict, they could all very easily fall into the supercritical sea below. so they try to find nonviolent solutions when possible, and there is heavy emphasis on maintenance and aiding neighbors in trouble there is no one governing body for the whole world, or for whole aircity "continents"
brillians are not the first of their kind, their species ("ancestor clade" - i use "clade" to describe all the different branches of said origin species, brillians are one of many clades) is from another distant, unknown planet
like an organic von neumann probe, the brillians' ancestor species replicates itself across the universe, exploring and living in as many places as possible, forming many species branches in the process. this is how the species is i suppose brillians evolved out of this urge

Aedo is an Imaiga warrior witch and a rare example of a living Shimmera without a physical body. They of course had to die first to attain that status thus the very tongue in cheek ref sheet.
also... their ears fold over and the fin-like parts are expressive because otherwise they have a severe case of resting bitch face. I don't think I'm going to include a view of their ears up on the ref because they aren't normally able to hold their ears up anyways.
