been thinking about that scene in chalice of the gods when percy and annabeth are singing karaoke together. and it's so funny bc percy "if anything, i should be getting a scholarship to NRU" jackson is just stone-faced, fed up with this bullshit and just sings the song bc dammit this might as well happening. and annabeth "this quest is the least dangerous things i've had to do in my entire life, and i'm trapped in my eight-year-old body with no guaranteed that i'll return to myself" chase is just singing her heart out, adding a ridiculous amount of riffs and runs, and is definitely off-key and off tempo. like, percy could not be more pissed off about how stupid it'll be if they don't survive, and annabeth could not care any less about how they win as long as they do. this is a hilarious visual. hats off to rick.

i know there’s a very prominent sentiment of “oh luke and percy mirror each other in many ways and could have gone down the other’s path if this specific thing happened...” where nurture vs nature is used as a tool to show why percy makes the morally right choices while luke falls short and i want to be a bit of a contrarian and say that while the kind of “nurturing” one receives does shape one’s “nature” it is certainly not the ONLY contributing–or even, deciding factor. one’s inherent traits, character, self-developed thoughts are also incredibly important. that’s why i always LOVE it when antagonists in media have completely normal backstories. the two extremes of the uber privileged being “cartoonishly” evil vs the traumatised and abused being the “complexly” evil kind of play into the tropes too much and we forget alot of people making bad choices don’t snugly fit into one category. and that many people who have the ingredients to be a typical media villain simply pivot the other way and avoid the wrong choices and that many people who do bad things just do so because they want to. it’s as simple as that, *sometimes*. yes, in many cases, people are forced into doing despicable shit while the rest pointing fingers have the privilege to be avoidant of such difficult, antagonising choices. but luke’s situation is not that. while i do think luke would continue be upstanding in the camp if he had the love of a family/father, i do NOT think percy would betray the camp if he went through what luke did because he’s inherently not that person–his fatal flaw is loyalty, like come on–and if their roles were so easily reversible, there would be no need to call them different, individualistic characters. people don’t work that way. two people going through the exact same thing with the exact same upbringing make wildly different choices every single day because they’re different people at their very cores. there’s no “reversal” that’s possible for luke and percy because their way of reacting to problems, perceiving the world, perspective on conflict and conflict resolution, and a myriad other things is unique to their ownselves and there’s no detracting from that fact, even if their backstories were swapped entirely.
