Inuvember 2019: Day 9 — Naraku

This whole thing had stopped making sense a long, long time ago, and deep down, Naraku was well-aware of it. He had made it a point not to stop and think about why he was doing that, but sometimes he couldn’t help the whispers at the back of his mind, reminding him that this was all for nothing.

Kikyo would never have wanted him, but he couldn’t even pretend she would now, because she was gone. Power? Becoming a full-demon? He couldn’t fool himself anymore. He didn’t care for that. The idea of destroying Inuyasha and everyone he loved once and for all was tempting, he’d admit, but as pleasant as it was, it just wasn’t worth it. All the time and effort, all the pain he’d gone through, to destroy one pathetic half-demon? Please.

“Everything’s ready,” Byakuya said nonchalantly, somewhere behind him.

He had lost so much. He couldn’t care for people, but he’d lost parts of himself. He’d killed Kagura himself, took part in Kanna’s death, he’d sacrificed so much. He was nothing but a hollow shell now, and he couldn’t wait to end it all. Whether he perished in the battle or finally accomplished his goal, he just wouldn’t have to pretend anymore.

“What will you do after that?” he asked Byakuya.

The man remained silent for a moment. Naraku’s interest was unusual, didn’t feel right. Also, he doubted Naraku would let him roam the lands freely after that. Nah, chances were he’d just absorb him back, and he simply wouldn’t exist. Frankly, that was something he’d rather not think about. But if he had a shot at life? Hm…

“Flowers,” he said. He sounded hesitant, unsure of himself. “I think I’d… like to go pick flowers.”

There was something dreamy in his voice, and it made Naraku want to kill him here and there. Why should he get to dream when he couldn’t do that anymore? But unfortunately, he needed him. He had never been so powerful before, and he had never felt so weak and helpless. He probably needed to kill the dream while it was only just a dream, to ensure Byakuya wouldn’t betray him. Yet he heard himself say:

“I heard there were some beautiful fields.”

It wasn’t like him, and even Byakuya’s defiant look told him it was strange, for him to say that. Everything was falling apart. He didn’t know who he was anymore, couldn’t recognize himself.

He looked at the Jewel in his palm, and the stone seemed to be laughing at him. He considered throwing it away, forgetting about the whole thing, and simply disappearing. He just wanted it all to stop. At that thought, almost despite himself, he closed his hand around it.

Why was he even doing that to himself? He didn’t need to think. All he needed to do was kill Inuyasha and get to Kagome. Yeah. That was what mattered. His mind was a little blurry, and then his objective became clear. If he wanted it to stop, he had to win.

“We’re leaving,” he ordered, and Byakuya nodded.

It had been a nice fantasy, to imagine the fields of flowers. He had appreciated having the chance to at least think about it, but frankly, he had always known. From the moment Naraku brought him to life and he understood all there was to know about every single person who had  preceded him, he had known he was doomed. In the end, neither of them would get a chance at life.

Oh God...

Kagura, What were your thoughts concerning Sesshomaru? Did you have feelings of any kind towards him? I’d really like to know since I ship you two together.
