Damara Mopane Lodge Is Located 20 Km East Of Khorixas On The C 39 In Damaraland. As If An African Kingdom

Damara Mopane Lodge is located 20 km east of Khorixas on the C 39 in Damaraland. As if an African kingdom of old, Damara Mopane Lodge is constructed in a semi-circle of interlinking pathways leading to a lavish swimming pool at its centre. Innovatively designed, each chalet has its own small garden planted with vegetables. Bright yellow sunflowers peep out between verdant spinach, beetroot and zany scarecrows, creating an enchanting lodge setting. The labyrinth of walkways leads to a large and cheerful central area. A wash of fresh green brightens the interior as does the heart-shaped mopane leaves stencilled throughout the lodge. A highlight at the end of the day is to ascend the hill to a viewing platform for a sweeping vista of the mopane woodland illuminated by the setting sun. It also is the best spot for a sundowner drink and to gain a view of the intriguing construction of the lodge.

The Liebig Ghost House was originally built during the German colonial period in 1912-13 to house the farm managers of the Karl Liebig Company, which specialised in cattle breeding. The Liebig Company owned most of the commercial farming land in the Kuiseb River basin upper catchment and was formed in 1907 by the Deutsche Farmgesellschaft of South-West Africa. Liebig Co bought large areas of land on a nationwide scale - in order to establish a cattle farming and meat processing industry in the country.  Liebig House was built in true German architectural style. The house was an important stopover for travellers between Windhoek and the Atlantic coast and occupied by the director of the Liebig Company.

Chapman's Peak Drive on the Atlantic Coast between Hout Bay and Noordhoek in the Cape Peninsula in South Africa is one of the most spectacular marine drives in Africa and in the world. Chapman’s Peak Drive is affectionately known amongst locals as “Chappies” and is the must for anyone who is passionate about the majestic scenery of Cape Town and South Africa. Initially constructed during the WW1, this 9 km route with its 114 curves, skirts Chapman's Peak, the 590 m high southerly extension of Constantia Berg, and follows the rocky coastline to unfold breathtaking views in both directions. Car companies from all over the world like to shoot their commercials here.

------------------------------------------------------

Katutura is a township of Windhoek in Namibia. Katutura is Otjiherero for "The place where we do not want to live". Katutura was created in 1961 as an aftermath of the forced removal of Windhoek's black population from the Old Location, which later was developed into the suburb of Hochland Park. The Windhoek municipality and the South African colonial administration decided to forcefully move the residents of the Old Location 8 kilometres to the north of the city. Sam Nujoma Stadium, built in 2005, is located within Katutura. Katutura Community Radio, a community-based radio station, also operates from the township as well Katutura State Hospital, one of two State Hospitals in the Windhoek area.

March 19th 1813 saw the birth of David Livingstone in Blantyre.

Like my last post about Alexander, Livingstone is another figure that is well known and not easy to make a fresh post about, arguably the most important European explorer to ever brave the interior of Africa. Dozens of places in Africa and the world now bare his name. While many had established cities and colonies on the coasts of Africa, Livingstone was the first to undertake great expeditions to the interior. Contracting many diseases, creating a treatment for malaria, and striving for the abolition of slavery are just a few of his many achievements.

From the age of 10, he worked at the local cotton mill in Blantyre on 12 hour shifts, thankfully, he had aspirations to greater things in life. During one of his many expeditions, David Livingstone became the first foreigner to see the fabled Mosi-oa-Tunya waterfalls, not recognise the name? Well Livingstone christened them Victoria Falls.

While known as “Africa’s greatest missionary,” he was almost anything but. He is said to have had only one African convert — Sechele. Sechele was chief of the Kwena people of Botswana. Despite his conversion, Sechele still practiced polygamy and even after divorcing his other wives, maintained traditional practices before Livingstone gave up on him!

Livingstone was a staunch abolitionist and campaigned extensively for the cessation of the slave trade. He also felt it was his God-given mission to explore Africa and develop the continent and that only through trade (and fair trade practices) would the economy of slavery be so disrupted that it would eventually cease to exist.

After Livingstone’s death in 1873, his body and personal journals were shipped all the way back “home” by Chuma and Susi, two of his long term attendants. Today, his body is interred at Westminster Abbey in London. His heart, both figuratively and literally, remains in Africa however, buried under a Mvula tree. David Livingstone left the world as one of the greatest explorers of all time. There are literally dozens of cities, towns, monuments, schools, and other buildings named after him all over Africa and the world.

Many of us heard about Livingstone when we were children, we might not remember a lot about him but I’ll bet the vast majority of us can say we now the phrase by H.M. Stanley “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?”

Pics are statues of David Livingstone at the Zimbabwe side of  Victoria Falls., and in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
