kaspar, despite caring for and wanting to protect joosep, is always watching. as the movie began, he watched the violence everyone inflicted on joosep. he did not step in; he did not say anything. no one did.

later on, in the very last scene of the movie, there is one final act of aggression against joosep: his death. though it is self inflicted, it goes to show that violence has always been a part of joosep’s life.

once more, kaspar watches. he doesn’t pull the trigger on himself. he doesn’t stop joosep. he stands there, eyes wide and trained on the boy in front of him.

kaspar has always been passive, even after their attack. he sees the boy he’s dedicated his life to die, and he simply stands there. he does not act. he does not have input on anything that is happening.

andre hunting when he was little.

he was terrified of holding guns, let alone firing them. when he, his father, and his brother were in their shooting houses, andre would constantly plug his ears with his fingers.

of course, his brother bullied him for it. why wasn’t he being manly? why was he afraid? why was he different?

andre got his first kill in the fall of his eighth grade year. it was a buck that was almost as tall as him. he watched the blood flood out onto the dry and crunchy leaves, and he saw it twitch when he went to go collect it.

andre almost threw up, but then he remembered the words he’d heard all his life: ‘man up,’ ‘sissy,’ ‘faggot.’ he swallowed and fell in line after his father, getting closer to the deer.

older andre would say that he has always been evil, that he was just born that way, but young andre knows that everything changed the moment he made eye contact with the deer he had shot. he felt powerful. he felt strong, like a man. once his heart calmed and his stomach stilled, he was in love with his actions.

he’d beg his father to take him hunting, to let him practice shooting whenever he could. his father said yes every single time. he didn’t know the monster he was making.

cal has the worst immune system of all time.

he rarely ever feels good, whether he has a sore throat, runny nose, headache, or stomachache. it gets worse around winter, causing him to carry around medicine and tissues with him everywhere he goes. even andre has to keep a box of tissues in his glove box.

despite carrying around stuff to help him, andre makes fun of cal all the time. every time cal coughs, andre tells him to get away and calls him a freak. if cal calls him in the morning because he’s sick and doesn’t need a ride to school, andre says ‘thank god’ and teases him before even asking if he’s okay.

cal’s parents used to take him to doctors constantly, trying to figure out what’s wrong with their son, but the doctors just say he’s easily susceptible to viruses and everything of the sort. he misses school almost to the point of truancy due to fevers and being contagious. his mom just calls the school and goes to pick up his work from the office. rachel and andre go to his house after school to try to teach him, but they always end up watching movies and talking instead of learning.

cal has really bad cystic acne on his face while andre has bumps all over his arms and his back because he has keratosis pilaris.

- Every time Andre walks into his house, Mel meows so loud it can only be described as screaming. She tries to crawl up his legs and bother him until he picks her up.

- Andre has had Mel since he was two and Mel was one. They’ve grown up together. Andre has no memories without Mel. He calls Mel a grandma constantly because she’s seventeen. (She’s still going strong though!)

- Mel does not like Cal. She nips at him whenever he tries to pet her. Andre tries to reassure Cal, saying she’s just on edge, but it is Cal’s fault. They just don’t get along.

- When Andre and Cal were working on the pipe bombs, Mel walked through their mess constantly. She had little black spots on her fur that made Andre have to wash her.

- Cal doesn’t care that Mel doesn’t like him. He’ll still cradle her like a baby and pet her until she’s drawn blood from his hand from biting him.

- Andre always has white cat hair on his clothes. His grey camouflage shirt is permanently covered in cat hair no matter how many times he washes it.

- Mel has walked in on Cal and Andre making out and more way too many times. Andre has to pause everything and push her out of the room in order for her to leave them alone.

- Mel is a big cat, and I mean big. Andre’s parents still think she’s half maine coon.

- When Andre is upset, Mel sits in his lap or on his chest in an attempt to help. She also licks at his face when he cries. She does everything she can to cheer Andre up.

- Cal makes fun of Mel as a joke sometimes, and it always makes Andre upset. Cal tries to make him laugh, but Andre just stares at him with a blank face.

- Mel sleeps in Andre’s bed at night. When Cal sleeps over, she sleeps in between them. If they want to cuddle, they have to move her to the end of the bed.

caldre is that annoying duo who have the same mannerisms and jokes as one another. they move the same way. their speech patterns are the same. their dark humor is identical. it’s tiring to everyone they’re around, but they don’t care.

imagine if zero day didn’t take place at iroquois high school. it took place at andre’s work instead.

cal would come in during the lunch rush, weapons in a backpack he slung over his shoulder, and hide in the bathroom. when everything dies down and only a few customers are in the restaurant, andre sneaks into the front of house and locks the doors.

quickly, he heads to cal’s hiding spot. the boys arm themselves and pack their pockets full of the bombs they made a couple weeks ago. andre’s apron stains almost immediately when the small pipes touch it.

they walk to the kitchen first, where andre had been assigned that day. cal shoots first, hitting a lady in her shoulder and a man in the heart. andre throws an explosive near the ovens.

chaos erupts in the dining room. people clamor for the doors, pushing and shoving workers and patrons alike. no one can get out.

the army of two uses the stampede as a shooting ground. rounds are fired on repeat, hitting almost everyone. sirens can be heard. the police were alerted a lot quicker than they would have been at the school.

andre and cal run to the walk in freezer. that is where their lives end.
