I Drew Some Shroomsonas For MayShroom! These Are A Shaggy Inkcap And A Bleeding Tooth, Both Found In

I drew some shroomsonas for MayShroom! These are a shaggy inkcap and a bleeding tooth, both found in the UK. If I had to pick one I think I’m more of an inkcap, but the bleeding tooth is great fun to draw.
I wanted to do the whole challenge at first, but I didn’t have the energy. I feel bad because Sam Guay deliberately tried to make it easier by giving 4 weekly prompts instead of 31 mushrooms, but I actually found the prompts much harder than doodling up 31 quick botanical illustrations or a mushroom fairies or something. Oh well, next year!

Over Christmas the Sunday School children made some paper angels to decorate the church, and I thought it would be fun to try to interpret them literally.
The first one is based on small angels they made to decorate the cross, they had wings but no arms, and halos but no faces.
The middle two are based on a huge angel Gabriel, which was 5 massive pieces of black paper in a sort of windmill shape, covered in stars and googly eyes. He also had a halo with no face. I thought, best case scenario this is a human-shaped star field, worst case it’s a sort of hole in reality filled with eyes.
The final one was based on chatting to the parish priest about how angels are described in the Bible. There’s a lot of eyes and wheels involved.
I’d quite like to work these up into a series of paintings, I think? These were all done with crayola pencils on printer paper because I was at my parents’ house. I’d also like to try and animate the final one, in my mind it was spinning.

Inktober 2021, Day 1 - fountain pen
He wasn’t there a moment ago.

I had a notion years ago that it might be instructive to compare different methods of inking the same picture as a sort of tutorial. I never did make a tutorial, but on a whim I drew the comparison pictures a few days ago.
The top row is all fineliners, and compares three different choices a person might make about where to place their thick and thin lines. The bottom row is comparing water-soluble ink, a metal dip pen and a paintbrush.

A little woodland scene painted with three spare watercolour half pans.
I found these in a box of half pans I’d forgotten about while digging out my gouache. I don’t use pre-made pans anymore (I just squeeze tubes into them), so I thought I’d pick two or three out at a time and mess around with limited palettes. I played it safe this time with sepia, yellow ochre and intense green, but next time I might pick some at random and see what I can do.
The tiny sketchbook is also something I used half of and then forgot about. I seem to have used a lot of it for swatches so I think it deserves some nicer pieces.

It’s Thought Bubble Digital Comic Con this weekend! It’s the only digital con I agreed to this year, so I’ve tried to list as much in my online shop as possible. I have mystery bundles, new postcards, art books, comic collections and handmade notebooks! The ink drawings are normally convention exclusives and will be taken down at the end of the day on Sunday, so be speedy if you want one of those! You can find me in Bubble Boy Hall! https://www.thoughtbubblefestival.com/bubbleboyhall
