Not Celebrating Today. Instead Im Thinking About My Parents Who Are Both Residential School Survivors.

Not celebrating today. Instead I’m thinking about my parents who are both Residential School Survivors. I’m thinking about my Aunts, Uncles and older cousins who went and who survived. I’m also thinking about those who never came home. So many never came home. Today I’m spending this time with family and just being with them. 🧡🧡🧡

“Black lives matter” does not mean “fuck anyone who’s not black,” it means “support black people.”

“Gay rights” doesn’t mean “fuck anyone who’s not gay,” it means “support gay people.”

“Trans rights” doesn’t mean “fuck all cis people,” it means “support trans people.”

“Respect women” doesn’t mean “fuck all men,” it means “support women.”

It’s not about you.

My dear lgbt+ kids,

If you’re a teenager, you are allowed to have a crush on teenage celebrities - even if you’re both the same gender.

“Don’t sexualize teenage celebrities” means adults shouldn’t act as if teenagers are sexually avaible to them, just because they happen to be famous. It means it’s not okay to disguise pedophile thoughts as “normal fan behavior”. It means that being a fan does not give anyone the “right” to be creepy, the “right”  to make someone uncomfortable and harrass them.

It does NOT mean “Gay teenagers are overly sexual and predatory and gross” - and if someone uses it to make you feel that way, they’re twisting it to excuse their homophobia.

Boys having celebrity crushes on boys is okay. Girls having celebrity crushes on girls is okay. There’s nothing predatory or overly sexual about that. Those romantic feelings for someone who is far away (and doesn’t know you exist) can even be a healthy way to “test the waters”, can help you explore your feelings in a safe way.

It goes without saying that you shouldn’t do anything that makes them uncomfortable or harrass them in any way, either. Respect boundaries - but that goes for everyone and it’s actually homophobic to imply that gay teenagers are more likely to harass celebrities than straight teenagers are.

It’s just a modern spin on the old myth that “gay people are all pedophiles!”. There’s no truth to that.

With all my love,

Your Tumblr Dad

“Many of my movies have strong female leads - brave, self-sufficient girls that don’t think twice about fighting for what they believe in with all their heart. They’ll need a friend, or a supporter, but never a saviour. Any woman is just as capable of being a hero as any man.” -Hayao Miyazaki

Happy International Women's Day to:

women of color, lesbians, ace and aro girls, trans women, bi and pan girls, disabled and neurodivergent women, Jewish and Muslim women, women who fight for equality and their right to be heard, women who are driven, women who are career-oriented, girlbosses, women who want children and women who don't, mothers, women who get called "bossy" and "shrill," polyamorous women, women with multiple partners, young girls who are figuring out their place in the world, women who are sex workers, women who have survived abuse and women who didn't, autistic women, gnc women, women who get talked over, women who are told that their thoughts don't matter, fat girls and skinny girls, women who have had an abortion, women of low-income, women who are homeless, women with big noses, women with acne or a skin condition, women who work in STEM, unconventionally beautiful women, women who have depression or anxiety, women who rely on aids, deaf and blind women, women who have intrusive thoughts, women coping with PTSD, and women with chronic illness.

we are beautiful, and we are strong. but we are stronger together. Happy International Women's Day.

in light of this news, I do wanna say this for anyone who needs it: staying informed/in the loop and doomscrolling are two different things, and it's important for your mental health to know what that difference is for you.

it's essential now more than ever to make sure that we're in the loop with current events and politics. this post is absolutely not advocating for ignoring the news, especially considering factors such as privilege. if you're able to, please do try to stay informed. but there comes a point where information can become too much (particularly when you belong to a marginalized group), causing stress, anxiety, and burnout. being an informed citizen shouldn't come at the expense of your wellbeing.

right now, please ask yourself: am I checking the news to stay up to date, or am I checking it because I'm scared? am I following current events to enhance my understanding, or am I following it because I'm too anxious to tear away?

if you feel rising panic, dread, and anxiety that's spiraling, it's time to step back. being an informed citizen doesn't mean agonizing over things you can't control. when that happens, it's time to rein yourself back in.

consider this post a checkpoint, especially if you're an American, black/a person of color, a marginalized identity (be it religious, gender/sexuality, or disability), or any combination thereof. it's alright to step back and care for yourself.

allow yourself room to breathe. it'll be okay. you'll be able to step back in when you're ready.
