Chapter 19, Mostly I’m at Sea

The taxi cut through street after street of cream coloured houses with peach thatched roofs. Through the open window, warm air carried the smell of citrus trees, the salt from the nearby ocean, and sunscreen. Everything about it carried a flavor of hope and possibility.

That taste mingled with the words fizzing on Stevie’s tongue. All the words she wanted to say to Seb. For a year she had been talking to him in her head. Apologizing. Telling him how much she missed him. Hoping he was okay and happy. Now she was actually doing something about it.

A part of her hated that she had to choose between them at all, but this wasn’t some ‘Choose your own adventure’ story. She couldn’t just choose one option, then go back and replay another option to see what might’ve been.

“One minute to midnight!” Chels yelled, popping a fresh bottle of champagne and taking a swig from the neck.

Hope curled her arm around Misty’s waist. “So, Sparkles, which ending do you want?”

Before We Were Lovers, I Swear We Were Friends

“You been paddleboarding before?” Seb’s voice close behind her made her jump.

“Jesus!” she blurted out as she turned to look at him. “You’re like a cat.”

He smirked at her. “Cheers.”

He looked surprisingly relaxed after everything last night. “I’ve gone a couple times,” she said, returning his smile.

“I’m rubbish at water sports.”

She squinted at him. “Would we call it a sport?”

“Sure. Or I don’t know. Either way I’m bound to be going arse over tit before anyone else.” They approached the buffet line and he handed her a plate.

Stevie chuckled. “It’ll be a shame to miss that.”

His eyebrows lifted in surprise as he piled some bacon on his plate. “Miss it? I was hoping you’d take a front row seat to my humiliation.”

There was a note of strain in his voice. A fragile thread of disappointment that twisted around her heart and pulled tight. “Well…” she said reluctantly. “I told everyone I would leave today.”

“Ah,” he said distantly. His eyes were focused on something across the room. Stevie followed his gaze to see Lily teasing a piece of celery between her teeth and smiling at him.

Stevie tried to sound as playful as she could. “If I’m reading Lily’s subtle cues right, she’d be glad to sit in your front row.”

Seb shook his head. “I’m worried about what she’ll do to me if she gets me alone on a board.”

Stevie looked at Lily who was now sucking bloody mary out of the little valley in her celery. “I don’t know if you have the balance to handle what she wants to do to you out there.”

“Definitely not.” He nudged her arm. “So you going to save me from a watery grave and be my partner?”
