I have this headcannon that the moment Nico realized his feelings for Percy was on Olympus when Percy calls him out by name in front of the Gods (and especially Hades) as a hero who deserves more recognition. I think that’s really what got him. Percy doesn’t praise anyone else by name in that speech, not even Annabeth, and this is right after Nico betrayed him and genuinely thought he had ruined their friendship forever. His brain would have broken I know it.
(Of course immediately after that Percy and Annabeth have the greatest underwater kiss of all time in front of the entire camp, probably including Nico. No wonder he leaves camp in such a hurry. Honestly it would make the complete 180 his attitude towards Percy takes in HOO make sense, like he goes from always excited to see him to barely making eye contact. Nico saved the world, fell in love, and got his heart broken all in one day)
