You Remember When I Got So Sick A Few Months Back? When I Was In The Hospital For, What? Two Weeks?Three?

“You remember when I got so sick a few months back?  When I was in the hospital for, what?  Two weeks?  Three?”

Shouto remembered being woken up in the middle of the night by the sound of strange voices and urgent footsteps in the corridors.  Instinct in the face of potential home invaders drove him to his feet and into the hall where he was confronted by the sight of paramedics swarming around his brother’s door.  Fuyumi was among them, pulling shoes onto her bare feet and answering questions at the same time.  She looked up and saw him, then told him to go back to bed.  He’d asked what was going on, and she only repeated herself.  When they brought Touya down the hall on a gurney, he was watching through a crack in the door.  He had looked so pale and the hand Fuyumi was grasping as they raced by was limp.  He couldn’t remember what had been wrong with him, but the tension that followed in the house clued him in that it was serious this time.  Fuyumi was overextending herself between work and constant trips to the hospital.  Natsuo even came home from college to help her with the housework and they both visited their brother and they took turns on who made dinner at home.  Shouto’s training continued as usual, but every night over dinner, Dad would briefly ask for updates about Touya.  Fuyumi gave short answers filled with forced optimism.  Natsuo actually threw down his chopsticks once and screamed at their father,

“Just go see him!  That’s all he wants!”
