when the voice messages arrive, mengran plays them out several times. louder the second time, because she thought she had heard wrongly. softer the third time, as if trying to keep everything -- all the surprise, sadness -- to a minimum.

the knowledge that mengran had of ren xinyu previously before their personal connection isn't all that different from what the general public would know. as a supporter and genuine fan of a good actor like him, she's always enjoyed watching his shows, and was one of those who had expressed disappointment and concern when he suddenly made his departure from filming that time. luckily, his performance as sheng yuan had been so remarkable and multiple rewatches of that made waiting easier, not to mention all the time she spent trying to analyze and learn how one acts like him. she hadn't assumed anything else back then, nor that she felt the need to.

if those emotional scenes have never failed to make her cry for how real and pained they were, how much worse would real life be? how much sadness does ren xinyu have to face, for losing his brother, for trying to return on screen again?
