i wasn’t afraid, mama; i was bored. i was hungry. do you know how long i waited for that fruit? me in the fields, the sunlight on my hair a crown. sweat on my palms glittering like starbursts carved in marble, teeth sharp as athena’s sword. he took one look at me and broke the earth open for desire. and all that time, you thought golden-armoured braggarts could storm my heart into surrender. oh, mama. what did i care to be a bride when i could be queen? i wasn’t afraid, mama; i wasn’t taken. i left. if you only knew  how his hair is softest when he’s on his knees, coaxing spring from inside of me.

Asclepius (Theos of Medicine)

Asclepius is a Theoi, though he began life as a mortal.

Asclepius is the son of Apollo and Koronis (a princess). His mother died before he was born, and he was still in her womb when she was being burnt on the funeral pyre. Artemis killed her after witnessing Koronis’ unfaithfulness to Apollo.

Apollo saved Asclepius from death by cutting him out of his dead mother, and took him to a centaur named Kheiron, who raised him as he did other heroes.

Kheiron taught Asclepius the field of medicine, and he excelled greatly.

With the knowledge given to him by Kheiron, and with the aid of gifts from the Theoi, he began to heal mortals. He did his job so well, however, that he managed to raise the dead. This made Zeus angry, since he believed that Asclepius was going against natural laws, and it was offensive, since he was a mere mortal. So, Zeus struck Asclepius with a lightning bolt. killing him.

Zeus, realizing that Asclepius was beneficial tot he human race, transformed him into one of the Theoi, and crafted his constellation in the stars, Ophiuchus.

In art, particularly statuary, Asclepius is depicted as a bearded man with a kind face. He bears a staff with snakes wrapped around it, a common healing symbol even today.

Asclepius’ healing sites and shrines survived even throughout roman times. The sick and ailing would travel to them, and spend the night there. In the morning, they would relate the dreams they had, supposedly involving Asclepius, and would be diagnosed or advised by the priests.

I don’t know if it’s cultural/latent Christianity or just standard media illiteracy, but people need to seriously read up on the nature of mythology in ancient cultures. Like seriously.

So many people treat myths as factual accounts of events. I have never seen any literary scholar, anthropologist or historian make the claim that this was the way the ancients viewed their myths. It’s metaphor. It’s allegory. It’s symbolism. It’s a narrativised ritual. It’s artistic social, political, cultural commentary, instruction or expression. The claim that a myth should be interpreted literally is never made by serious researchers, because it

1) is inherently unprovable and unarguable, which renders it scientifically irrelevant.

2) it blocks off many more salient interpretations that can co-exist with other contradictory non-literal interpretations.

3) it does not seem consistent with the way myth was treated by storytellers and scholars of the time.

Myth is an inherently flexible medium. It’s beautiful and elegant in its manifold meanings. Stop trying to make it a literal account. It isn’t. Never has been. Do your research about the culture, the medium and the traditions you discuss, before making wild statements, before writing ahistorical retellings, or trying to cancel gods or the people who follow them, based on texts that were written (and before that orally handed down) thousands of years ago in a cultural tradition entirely different than ours.

STOP PROJECTING YOUR OWN LITERALISM AND REJECTION OF COMPLEXITY ON OTHER CULTURES.

It’s ignorant, it’s incurious, it’s incorrect and frankly disrespectful, racist and colonialist to insert your misunderstood notion of mythology in a culture that you have barely researched.

Some people need to be a bit less concerned with being seen as perfect paragons of moral righteousness, and a bit more with not spreading misinformation, cultural ignorance and media illiteracy.

Hermes Is The Herald Of The Gods, He Is Also Protector Of Travellers, Merchants, Thieves And Orators.

Hermes is the herald of the gods, he is also protector of travellers, merchants, thieves and orators. Today is his day of traders, a day where you can consider making offerings to Hermes for success in business, selling your own items, food, crafts etc. Some good offerings to Hermes include  - Acts of devotion (helping lost people, giving to the needy, helping small businesses, breaking the news to people, making sure people hear truths) - Coins - Crafted items - Cockrel/Chicken feathers - Dice - Gold and silver objects - Food that is not from where you are / your culture

I've been learning about all of the Greek Gods, especially those who I had negative connotations with. It's made me respect every single one of the Greek deities slowly but also... now I'm confused on who I calling to me now. I used to think it was always Hecate and I absolutely love Hecate. She's helped me out so much I'm sure of it even though I often didn't speak to her. But learning about others made me feel less close to her and I'm afraid of her not speaking to me anymore or her leaving. Maybe it's nothing but so many other gods seem to be getting my interest and I can't tell who's trying to contact me or if it's just me finding respect for them.

As a child I always loved ghost stories. I had such an obsession with ghosts and I wonder if that was always Hecate. Then there's Apollo which I've found a big love for recently. I always used music as a coping mechanism, was a writer, and have been obsessively dancing for a while now even before I found this connection with him. That makes me think that Apollo has to be one of the gods I should be talking to.

But then I learned about Zeus and Ares. I never connected to Ares and I think it's mainly because I thought I wasn't strong enough or because I wasn't an aries. I was honestly pretty dumb back then. As for Zeus, I just thought bad of him and even insulted him in the past due to bad research and just basing it off of mythology only.

But as I learned more about them, I got this fatherly vibe from them and felt like I definitely am more likely to have a connection with them than I thought I did. Especially Zeus. I have such a passion for justice and it makes me realize I had more in common with him than I thought.

Me and Ares might get along but I'm not so sure about that. I feel a bit of a pull towards him though.

But then here comes Hephaestus. He was always my favorite when I heard his mythology. Many times I've considered if I should go into welding because it seemed cool to me. I've also considered archery before I knew anything about Apollo which makes me question this pull to welding.

I also feel very similar to Aphrodite and have issues with my self-love which makes me want to work with her. This is all so conflicting and a big mess.

Can anyone help me out with this? I know this post is all over the place and pulling in many directions. I mean, who knows I might learn more and become even more confused. But hopefully I can get some insight.

I am trying to find ways to get closer with Apollo and Dionysus, but I have no clue what to do. I feel so overwhelmed. They have small altars (I don't have much for them unfortunately), but I want to do more for them. But there's so much. There's, like, four different ways to communicate, and there's channeling, and there's all of these things that I don't really understand.

Where should I look to find help? Tumblr has been good to me so far. Maybe you guys could help direct me?

Prayers•

Regular prayer

Dionysos, god whose arrival is swift and certain, enduring friend of women and men whose welcome is warm, bringer of light, we see you in shadows. Dionysos, granter of great blessings, your presence is a heady wine. Kind-hearted god, to each you give as is fitting, each vessel you fill only as we can bear, and yet with even a sip, we are drunk upon you, and our faith is affirmed. Awesome god, by our own will we drink deeply, with you we become lost, we wander, we are found.

Litany to Dionysos

Dionysos of the vine, rich-tressed god of wine, potent and lusty, unmixed, undiluted, with full force you come to us, vital and robust, rich and strong and surprisingly sweet. Dionysos, I praise and honor you, I thank you for your blessings. Ivy-bearing Dionysos, god of the green, of the power of root on stone, the force of life that will make its own way in spite of all who labor to hold it back, no will or work can bind your might. I praise and honor you, I thank you for your blessings. Dionysos of the deep earth, of the dark world, of the unknown expanse beneath the black soil, beneath solid stone, of mysteries you know much, of death and of what lies beyond. God of secrets, I praise and honor you, I thank you for your blessings. Dionysos the inspiring, granter of words of prose or poesy, words heard best by the drunken and the mad, words forgotten with the passing of night and delight. Bacchus, granter of rare transport, I praise and honor you, I thank you for your blessings. Dionysos Soter, holder of the hearts of men, you free us from the cares of the world, each brilliant frenzied moment a shining jewel, each glimpse of the sacred more precious than gold. I praise and honor you, I thank you for your blessings. Kindly Dionysos, granter of good to men and women, giver of gifts to all who seek your blessing. Gracious Dionysos, accepter of offerings great and small, friend of mankind, I praise and honor you, I thank you for your blessings.

Regular Prayer to Dionysos

Dionysos, deep-hearted one who knows the souls of men and women, whose hand is ever open, ever within reach. Dionysos, god who runs in the dark, who sees with eyes shut tight, who dances to the heart’s strong beat, ever are you yourself, ever constant, ever changing god of those who are trapped, those who seek your truth and their own, those who seek vision beyond seeing, those who seek wisdom beyond knowledge, those who seek the self, pure and sweet, those who seek clarity beyond definition, who seek to embrace the uncertain, to hold, but loosely, to what is true beyond trust.

Regular prayer to Dionysos

I praise Dionysos, lord of the vine, lord of the far reaches of the mind; in the thick of the woods, along darkened paths, in the shadows of dusk and of dawn, you roam the world, the satyrs and the pretty nymphs dancing in your wake. Son of Zeus and fair-haired Semele, bold-hearted Semele, who dared to look into the face of glory, beautiful Semele who you carried into life again, Semele reborn who men called Thyone; beloved of clever Ariadne, quick-witted one, so dear to your heart, your bright-eyed bride and consort; Dionysos, friend of women, friend of the blissful, wild-eyed maenads, pilgrims and pioneers, those who seek, your cheer and inspiration, those who seek your release, from sorrow and despair, those who are lost in joy, and those who have found themselves in you. Dionysos, god of the darkest dark and the deepest deep, boundless one, endless one, fathomless one, in you we see the edges of ourselves, in you, we find our life’s journey, in you we find our home.

To Dionysos

I call to Dionysos, great god of the vine, son of thundering Zeus and headstrong Semele, loving husband of warm-hearted Ariadne. From the east you came, old before the ancients, throughout the elder world were you beloved; in Naxos and Boitia were you celebrated, in temples and in the savage wilderness, the fleet-footed maenads running in your wake. The sweetest, strongest wine is ever your drink; the mind’s release, the body’s loosening, your gift. O Dionysos; thyrsus-shaker, ivy-crowned god, we see you in the shadows, we see you on the edges, we see you in the haze of ecstasy, where we know the truth of passion, where we find the essence of our being. Bacchus, I call to you!

Prayers•

Historical-

Holy Queen of Sanctity, we hymn you, Hestia, whose abiding realm is Olympus and the middle point of earth and the Delphic laurel tree! You dance around Apollo’s towering temple rejoicing both in the tripod’s mantic voices and when Apollo sounds the seven strings of his golden phorminx and, with you, sings the praises of the feasting gods. We salute you, daughter of Kronos and Rhea, who alone brings firelight to the sacred altars of the gods; Hestia, reward our prayer, grant wealth obtained in honesty; then we shall always, dance around your glistening throne.

For the lost -

Blessed Hestia, the first and the last, and the always flame. May your light burn bright and strong, May your prayers be those of respect and love, May you guide the lost, And give to those who have nothing. I give thanks to you, Hestia, for all that you have done And continue to do.

For people with intrusive thoughts -

I ask Hestia, the kind goddess, to help those who feel down. May they find comfort and peace inside of their homes and inside their own minds. Protect them for their destructive thoughts, and be the safe place they need so much

A prayer for homeles—

In Hestia’s name, may you always have a home and a roof over your head. May you always be comfortable and warm with a full belly. May you always be in good spirits and good company, never knowing the pervading loneliness that envelopes the soul.

Morning

Blessed Hestia, Fill this home with your light and bounty, As the day fills it with golden sunshine.

Evening

Glorious Hestia, Let your hearth fire warm this house, As night draws her shadowed cloak over it now.

Blessings of the kitchen-

Hestia bless my little kitchen, I love it’s every nook And bless me as I do my work, Wash pots and pans and cook. May the meals that I prepare, Be seasoned from above, With thy blessings and thy grace, But most of all thy love

Ares, I pray to you.

In general

Bright-helmed Ares, strong of arm and stern of visage, firm of stance, unyielding of will, ever ready to face any foe, to hold the line against all who may come, to battle until the end. Ares, son of noble Zeus and wise Hera, cherished by golden Aphrodite, honored by those who call on you for strength and courage, in the north were you much honored in times of old, in Thrace and Thessaly were you held in esteem by those whose lives were harsh, whose world was stony, whose comforts were hard-won. Ares who answers the prayers of the despairing, I honor you

For Courage

Ares, fierce-hearted son of Zeus and noble Hera, full-famed you are as god of war. To you do soldiers pray when battle is most heated, when mettle is most needed. To you as well do we turn in desperate times, to you do we call for strength, for the spirit to endure. You understand the terror of struggle and strife, you confront it in every way. Ares, your courage is unquestioned, your might and your prowess unequaled. Ares, friend to those in direst need, I pray to you, grant me the nerve to face what must be faced, grant me the will to do what must be done, grant me the heart to forge ahead.

What angers them • Insulting them,

Music they like• I would think Sleep Music, Sleep Asmr

What they like • sleep.

Prayers•

1.

Ever-shifting Morpheus, lord of the Oneiroi who bring us our dreams, true or false. Morpheus, swift-soaring courier, twilight messenger of the gods, kind one, dweller in the shadowed land of dreams, dark-winged god who shapes the visions of the night, who tells the tales that must be told, who strips us bare of secrets, who clothes hard truths in subtle raiment, child of the black night, child of the shrouded dark, in the realm of illusion you are king. Morpheus, harbinger of change, concealer of clues, you bury bits of truth among our wishes and fancies; with your aid can we see into the mist of the unknown, with your aid can we find the hidden pieces of the self. Morpheus, I praise and honor you.

2.

With a whisper I call you, o Morpheus,  lord of dreams, greatest amongst the Oneiroi. I call to you as Hypnos draws near.

Phantasos, ancient messenger who  crafts wonder into form who conjures in our minds a tapestry otherworldly. Greatest molder and master of lights,  many-shaped, you cross the night  and take on any face or voice any hue or sound you so desire. I ask you, my lord: shield me from pain  and fear in my dreams, let no anguish burden my heart as I sleep. This only I request: that within your great creations I may rest  and through your hand I may find safe haven. That my words may reach you, o Morpheus  whispered though they may be as Hypnos draws near.
